1. History of Tulungagung Regency and Boyolangu Village
Reported by the official website of UIN Satu Tulungagung, the history of Tulungagung is written in the Lawadan inscription, Sukra Suklapaksa Manga Siramasa. Based on this inscription, Tulungagung was founded on November 18, 1205 AD. The inscription was given by King Daha Kertajaya.
The inscription is a form of appreciation to the people of Thani Lawadan, south of Tulungagung, who were loyal to the king during enemy attacks from the east of Daha. Therefore, in 2003, November 18 was designated as the anniversary of Tulungagung Regency.
Meanwhile, in Boyolangu Village, there is the Gayatri Temple which is a place to enshrine Gayatri (Sri Rajapatni), the fourth wife of King Majapahit. The history of Boyolangu Village is listed in the Negarakertagama Book.
Based on the book, Bayalangu/Bhayalango comes from two words, namely bhaya which means danger and alang which means barrier. The village was used as a place to purify Gayatri.
2. Origin of the name Tulungagung
There are two versions about the origin of the name Tulungagung. First, Tulungagung is taken from the word 'Pitulungan Agung', which means Help from the Most Great. The name was taken from an incident where Joko Baru tried to dry up a water source in Ngrowo (the ancient name of Tulungagung Regency).
Joko Baru clogs water sources using sticks from palm or sugar palm trees. It is said that he became a snake as a result of being cursed by his father. To return to being human, Joko must wrap his body around Mount Wilis. However, it turned out that his body could not circle the mountain perfectly. As a result, he stuck out his tongue to reach it.
The father thwarted his efforts by cutting off Joko Baru's tongue. Instead of being cut, the tongue turned into a powerful spear. Now, it is believed that the spear is still well preserved.
The second version states that the name Tulungagung is derived from two words, namely Tulung and Agung. Tulung is interpreted as source, while Agung is interpreted as big.
In Javanese, Tulungagung can be interpreted as an area that has large water sources. This is because before the Niyama Dam was built by the Japanese army, Tulungagung was often inundated due to the large number of water sources.
On the other hand, there is an etymology based on the naming of the capital city of Tulungagung. At that time, the capital city of Tulungagung was in the Kalambret area, which was named the Ngrowo Duchy (the name 'Ngrowo' means water source).
