This was a fantastic discussion to watch. I see some people slamming the host as being unprofessional or horrible, but I think he did a fine job. Rather than an interview, which is often one-sided, this was more of a conversation. The interaction, as an extension of Alda's glass of water demonstration, I think, makes it more memorable. I enjoyed it very much.
Pierce saluted 5 times in the show, the onest ones! Twice for Radar, once for Blake, another one for Father when he was made Captain, and the last one when for Potter.
You're more right than you know. Gary Burghoff said the reason he was so good in his role as Hawkeye is because he basically was the character. Full of himself.
Hey, read the title of the program: "A conversation with Alan Alda." A conversation is a comfortable give and take!!! This was a great "conversation"!!!
Mash was one of those very rare tv shows that became far more famous and more of a hit than the book or movie that spawned it! In fact the tv show became such a hit that I think everybody forgot about the book and film! Hardly any other tv show accomplished that. Most tv shows based on hit films-Logan's Run, Delta House didn't last long. In the movie Donald Sutherland's Hawkeye Pierce was a very subdued, laid back kind of guy who could care less about the war going on around him and didn't complain about being far from home. Alan Alda's Hawkeye Pierce was a neurotic, self centered, mean, arrogant, heavy drinking womanizer, who was constantly complaining about being far from his home, and was very concerned about the war. Donald Sutherlan'ds Hawkeye Pierce in the movie could care less about the exploitation of korean girls during the war, whereas Alan Alda's character was always concerned and protesting the exploitation of korean girls. Alan Alda's Hawkeye Pierce would never have forced a nude lady out of the shower the way that Donald Sutherland's Hawkeye does in the movie, who finds it incredibly funny when he tricks the nude Margaret Holuhan out of the shower stall in front of the whole camp just for kicks. In the movie the characters thought nothing of cheating on their spouses back home. The tv characters considered their marriages back home very seriously-with the exception of Frank Burns-and never cheated (though B.J. kind of did once)
Alan was just diagnosed eigh Parkinson’s disease. I have a disease of the 🧠 Brain. Now 106 will be suspect as you become fatigue so easy...you emotional breakdowns. You will change a Hawkeye.! I have loved your characters for years. Parkinson’s os TOUGH I AM 62 and while happy to be here with my sweet family. I am blessed! Blessed to 😂 and love but I still have Dystonia of the spine.and the Brain FARTS THAT GO WITH IT JUST AS THE CO DISEASE. LORD BLESS Alan .ps I live for my wife too and faithful like you.
14:43 Hawkeye had two big collapses the chicken event was one. The other was when a solider came in who had been in a wet ditch for long time. The way he smelled triggered a memory from Hawkeye's childhood. A beloved older relative pushed Hawkeye out of a boat. He had a massive allergic reaction. Col. Potter called the Psychologist Sydney Friedman and he got it out of Hawkeye who sobbed uncontrollably. It had an impact on me because in the 80's you rarely saw men crying on TV.
There was another episode where Hawkeye was having bad dreams about his childhood friends. Each time he would wake up screaming and frightened at what seemed real in his dreams.
This person interviewing him it’s not nice. He talks more than the person who is interviewing I recently discovered European interviewersAnd there is so much better they let the guest do the talking this person just wants to hear his own voice and he does all the talking and doesn’t let Alan say a lot
i really dont know any more my ma died and ever talked to me 19 years my ma died and nothing for 19 years and she died she never talked to me for 19 years
I've always liked Alan Alda but the irony of MASH was that the more they tried to preach, the less effective the message became. The most effective message was in the first season. There are certain rules to war. Rule number one is that young men die. Rule number two is, doctors can't change rule number one. From then on, it got so obvious, it had no power.
Yes, they made it clear that they thought democrats are intelligent, compassionate and humorous and Republicans are mean spirited, cruel, obtuse and with no sense of humor.
As usual, I was enjoying listening to Alan Alda speak. His gifts in communicating know no bounds. However, I was repeatedly bothered by the interviewer’s/host’s questions. He seemed to be harbouring a very anti-establishment hidden agenda when he spoke while setting up each question and then how he worded the question. Alan, again, answered well but had to do so in a manner to remove each question’s potentially inflammatory subtext. This was so prevalent I had to stop watching it about 25% in. And this coming from a fairly left-leaning individual. I think the interviewer/host has spent too much time isolated in Academia.
Great actor, Damian Woetzel is a awful moderator. Let the guest speak. Geesh. The part about technology, he just keeps going. Stimulate and don't stifle.
Alda usually comes across as a very nice guy in interviews but he has a reputation of being pompous and sanctimonious, which isn't tough to believe. Maybe he's mellowed over the years.
I've never heard this before. I was always under the impression that he was one of the more down to earth likable actors. where have you heard this? just curious. I know his politics are quite liberal but that doesn't really bother me.
+Blue Forrester Just various reports over the years but I don't know what to believe. As I said, he seems very likable and even though he's clearly a liberal, he doesn't go around pushing his views like Mike Farrell. Who knows?
Alan Alda is a truly brilliant man. I still can't believe that my dad has met him on a couple of occasions and had a conversation once with him.
So Cool !
Alan alda is the perfect example of how a human being should be.
Damn it
@@deedeebensen5140 right??
So agree with you Lisa
It's great he's still around.......88 yrs of age!
I'm 60, and M*A*S*H* was my favorite show.
This man is never boring.
Alan Alda IS a real CLASS ACT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes he is!
Highly recommend Alan’s podcast
It's very unusual to find anyone in the acting world who wasn't brought up in a privileged lifestyle, Alan Alda not being an exception

Twice for Radar, once for Blake, another one for Father when he was made Captain, and the last one when for Potter.
Hawkeye and Trapper saluted Nurse Cutler as she lost her towel and ran away. Even though it wasn't a serious salute it was still a salute.
@@kd5you1 Wasn't serious = wasn't a salute
One of my favorite actors! He's on my "bucket list" of one of the people I'd love to meet before I die
Mine aswell and i'm only 13
I Met Alan Alda On September 24, 2007 At His Booksigning He Is So Nice Kind To His Fans!
I'd love to meet him too. He's a really good person.
Oh he’s on mine too. He seems so kind and wise.
You do not have an interview with Alan Alda ..You listen .He is in love withe the sound of his own voice God help him
You're more right than you know. Gary Burghoff said the reason he was so good in his role as Hawkeye is because he basically was the character. Full of himself.
Hey, read the title of the program: "A conversation with Alan Alda." A conversation is a comfortable give and take!!! This was a great "conversation"!!!
Alan is a very wise and good man
Almost 8 billion humans on this planet
Only ONE Alan Alda
Wow so true

Surely all we have is not just NOW, but past and future also counts, we need them for continuity, purpose, goal etc.
Naimul Haq - past and future are both imaginary
wowforreeel What is 'now' is abstract, relative and therefore imaginary/arbitrary.
Alan Alda the greatest of all time
Magnificent Alan!
Sometimes I have to remind myself that Alan Alda isn't actually a scientist.

Good job!
Mindfulness Alan :)
Come on Alan....Hawkeye saluted twice...then and when Radar left.
Hawkeye !genuinely! saluted twice in the show: when Radar left and when he and BJ said goodbye to Col. Potter.
The wilderness of my intuition.
So glad I'm not the only one who thought the interviewer was awful
The founding fathers put down in writing our fundamental human rights. What's not to like about our human rights in writing?

There was also the time his boyhood friend came to visit and returned later on a stretcher and died. Sometimes you hear the bullet.
hanscombe72 Everyone would have understood if Frank Burns had shot Hawkeye in the head while he was sleeping.
There was another episode where Hawkeye was having bad dreams about his childhood friends. Each time he would wake up screaming and frightened at what seemed real in his dreams.
Really? Thanx for sharing.
19:08 West Wing
Mr. Woetzel doesn't appear to understand that the viewers are tuning in for Mr. Alda's opinions and storytelling...Not his own.
I too hate socialists.

I agree, poor Alan.
"I'm with you until the founding fathers."
WTF?
i really dont know any more my ma died and ever talked to me 19 years my ma died and nothing for 19 years and she died she never talked to me for 19 years

Alan Alda and the interviewer

To think this man inhabits the same country as Trump.
What's wrong with that?
