This film from Ford shows the company's experimental gas turbine semi truck, known as "Big Red". It dates to approximately 1965. The film starts out with shots of the Cabana Motel in Atlanta before showing a map of the nation's new interstate highway system. At :54 a superhighway is shown with its many interchanges. "When this network is completed, true long-range hauling at sustained speeds with all city traffic bypassed...will become a practical idea for the first time." At 1:30 the standard cargo hauler of the era, a Ford diesel truck, is shown. The truck for the future is then unveiled at 1:56, the "Big Red". At 2:39 the truck is shown at the New York World's Fair where it was on display. At 2:52 it is shown at an auto show. At 3:10 the cab of the truck is shown backing into its trailer. At 3:30 an early Ford turbine is shown. At 3:42 the Ford turbine laboratory is shown with a mainframe type computer in operation. At 4:00 the experimental 705 engine is shown. At 4:12 the futuristic cab of the truck is shown off with its refrigerator, toilet, sleeping area, television set and more amenities. Sitting eight feet above the highway behind a free-standing control console, the driver had unlimited visibility.
Ford's advanced experimental “Big Red” truck represented a massive R&D effort by Ford. A major catalyst for the project was the potential for lucrative military gas turbine engine contracts unrelated to heavy trucks. “Big Red” made its public debut at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair. After the fair, “Big Red” toured the United States and Canada with stops in Boston, Buffalo, Chicago, Denver, Dallas, Los Angeles, Newark, Philadelphia, Oklahoma City, Toronto and Washington DC. The truck then made several cross-country test runs at costs comparable to diesel operation. Ford executive vice president Charles H. Patterson said “This truck is a concept vehicle from our product research office. It is a test-bed in which advanced engineering ideas are proved out in actual over-the-road operation”.
Ford envisioned huge double-trailer combinations like the “Big Red” concept which would travel 24/7 for maximum operating economy, rarely leaving the interstates except for driver changes, switching trailers and refueling.
Test drivers reported that the turbine power-plant was virtually noiseless, and produced an odorless, non-toxic exhaust (which was safely vented 14 feet above traffic). Years before brake regulations were created for heavy trucks, “Big Red” was built with three redundant brake systems. The brakes would pulse-lock automatically if the air pressure dropped below minimal levels.

I actually worked for one of the Engineers that was involved with this project! Granted it was many years later and he had retired from Ford. He designed the "twin I-beam" suspension and the cold-forging method to make the Aluminum beams. No BS. He told me that the turbine tractor would walk out of an iced bay like butter! No torque pulses like a Diesel. Sadly he is long Deceased but made a HUGE impact on my development as a young Engineer. He became not only a Boss, but a Mentor, and a friend. RIP Al R. Smith...

@Joseph Carver that’s inaccurate, hours of service are nothing new. The precursor to the Dept. of Transportation - the Interstate Commerce Commission, enacted the first HOS in 1938. Back then, a driver was allowed 12 hours of work within a 15 hour period. Work was defined as driving, unloading, and every task in between. And then, just as now, drivers had log requirements. What you’re referring to are drivers running illegally and faking log books, but that is not why sleepers of old were small.

I used to work with Robert Yates. He told me that Holman Moody did some of the testing of this truck before it was abandoned. Robert pulled the turbine out of the truck and it was sent back to Ford. HM was allowed to keep the truck. Robert said the biggest problem with the truck was that the turbine engine went through drive tires very fast. John Holman was originally a truck driver. He always had a love/interest in trucks. His last project was to put an air to air intercooler up in the air deflector of a Freightliner cab-over around 1975. That is the truck he was driving to Florida when he had his heart attack and died.

    • @recyclebills
      @recyclebills 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

When Holman Moody was closed Big Red was sold at auction. Mr Richardson in Greensboro bought Big Red along with several other items. I went to school with Mr Richardson's son. That's how I knew the old man. He had a huge personal collection of Ford high performance cars. You are correct that the turbine engine was shipped back to Ford but Mr Richardson sued Ford and eventually got possession of the turbine along about 1980. Big Red has been restored and remains in the private collection that his son keeps today.
Mr Richardson once allowed me to drive Big Red around the neighborhood. With him in the passenger seat, of course.
In the same era as Big Red, Virginia Carolina Freight Lines was testing a fleet of GM gas turbine trucks. Just like Big Red, they complained that tire wear was excessive but my friends who worked for them loved the trucks. Tire wear and excess fuel use were also the reasons the Cummings VT903 V8 Diesel was phased out of trucks in the late 1970s. God those were fun! But when everything else on the road turns 2100 RPM and the VT903 could turn over 3000 RPM, how could they not be fun?

I'm curious as to why it would use up the drive tires faster than other trucks was the turbine engine extremely heavy? Or was it just that it produced a lot more power and therefore wore the tires out quicker.

@@kens97sto171 They actually spun the tires. The same thing was true of the VT903 Cummings V8 diesel which was phased out of trucks in the late 1970s. There were also a few big Caterpillar and Detroit Diesel engines capable of doing burn-outs just as the VT903. Of course any number of modern diesels could do the same today if not for the electronics that keep power in check.

I had a co-worker 30 years ago that was a test driver for Ford during this time.
He was one of the test drivers on Big Red.
He said the truck could never make it over he biggest pass (can't remember the name of it) that they tested it on.
it had over temp shut downs in place and it would always shut down about 1000 ft before the summit.
The engineers could never get it to run cool enough to make the summit.
That problem along with the fact that turbines are very fuel thirsty and several other problems finally killed the project.
He said that it was a blast to drive and had lots of power but just could never get over the technical hurdles.
He had loads of stores about test driving all sorts of vehicles.
Never got tired of hearing them.

Gas Turbine Lab at Texas A&M (1975) was given one of these engines after Ford threw in the towel. It was hooked to a dyno and run once in awhile. The pressure ratio was 3.5 (~3.5 compression ratio). The air passed thru a heat exchanger & heated. Then to the combustor, to turbine and exhausted back thru heat exchanger (recuperated) to recover otherwise wasted heat. (Same system now used on M1A1 tank.). Efficiency was about 28-30%, at full load, nearly competitive w/ diesels of the day.
As I recollect Ford stopped GT research because road salt corroded the engine.
GT’s are best when run full load, and this does not work out on the highway. GTs compress more air for cooling than needed for combustion , this soaks up a lot of hp, vis a vis a diesel.

Much discussion here. Big Red was ahead of its time. Many truck builders tried turbines and did not find them cost-effective. As for drive tire wear: The turbine engines weigh less than diesels. Gas turbines develop maximum torque at zero RPM. Tire slippage was easily achieved. When I drove OTR running bobtail or lightly loaded I frequently spun the drives when accelerating. Turbines ate fuel at a tremendous rate. Sulphur in the fuel oils they used caused turbine blade erosion. The list goes on. I need to finish my GMC Astro 95 model truck (with the turbine engine).
