Facts! I’m from Philly too. If you keep your head down and stay focused on doing good you won’t get involved in the streets. Parents/family play a huge role as well. I have many friends who ended up dead or in jail but came from horrible home lives where their parents weren’t shit. It much harder making it out when your parents are into the negative shit.
I put it this way, if nobody in your family ever made it to college that don’t mean your not either. The problem with some people these days is that they comfortable and they don’t wanna go against the grain. You might be the difference maker for the next person to make it out and have a mind of their own. He had no father figure and didn’t know who his dad was and still don’t. I once asked him why he went into the army. His exact words were, “I looked around and all my friends I grew up with were either in jail, dead, or on drugs. I knew that if I didn’t leave I was going to end like that. I knew the army was going to give me somewhere to stay, 3 meals, and a check.” He went in there literally to get away and survive, but when he went in and saw the opportunities his mindset changed and ended up doing 30 years and retiring as a CSM. He was a black man in the early 90s that was in some of the most elite units during his army career. Mom came from a family of 10 her dad died when she was 13. She grew up in 2 bedroom 1 bathroom house. Graduated high school and went into the army less than a month after graduation. Her mother didn’t even know she was leaving until the week that she left. My mom said she went in because my grandmother (her mother) still had my 2 youngest aunts there at home with her to raise. My mom said she knew nobody had money to send her college. She said, “ I went away to help myself so I can be able to help my mother.” Both of my parents went into the military to survive and escape their environment, but ended up seeing the opportunity and making careers. My mom did 4 years then became a civil servant and retired from department of defense school system. Because of that decision of going into the army they are both retired and both collect 3 checks. See many will complain but few will take action. I’m sorry but it’s too many jobs out here to say ain’t no hope. I don’t care if I gotta work 4 fast food jobs to get to where I’m trying to go. I’m not gone take no risk for fast money to land my behind in jail or hell. Unless somebody got a gun to your head the choice is always yours. Side note I’ve been living in Delaware for 5 years now. I’m literally less than an hour from Philly. I don’t go there to hang out . I utilize the airport and drive thru there to get to king of Prussia. They literally got a state right next to them where cost of living is less, no sales tax, and mad job opportunities in banking, warehouse jobs especially with Amazon. I’m a woman and was working 3 jobs at one point. The bank full time, Amazon flex and the census part time. I was making at least $1k week just from Amazon flexing. They pay you twice a week and they don’t take out taxes because you operate as an independent contractor so you can write off your mileage and gas along with other car expenses. So don’t tell me ain’t no way out here.
Mom and pop had great mentalities. It doesn't change the fact that individual choice is still up to the individual AND your environment plays a part. You cannot deny that, everyone just reacts to said environment differently.
