It's kind of wild how Raylan went from really being able to read a room and understand people's motivations well in the original series to being in constant shock that there was some nefarious activity going on in Detroit. They really erased a good chunk of what made Raylan a great law man and decided to give us this version.

It's a different time, in a different city.

Raylan had an emotional attachment (Willa) that tied up his thinking

@@Shoobee63 He ships her off within days of being in Detroit. He's not actually preoccupied with Willa at any point - he's still a pretty deadbeat dad throughout the show until the end when he finally prioritizes his family. It still doesn't justify (ha) why he is dumbed down in City Primeval and incapable of investigating people the same way he could in other cities (not just Kentucky but we know that he was capable of doing the same in Miami too)

He may be a Fed, and have worked all over the US. But it's different when you know a place intimately because you grew up there.

Very good point. Plus Givens seems to be little more than one of too many other characters in overcrowded cast.

The 5th season aside, I very much enjoyed the original Justified, but City Primeval is merely tedious. Givens is the protagonist, but during those rare occasions when he's actually on screen, he's little more than background for characters nobody really cares about. During his brief moments in a scene, he often gets verbally abused and just stands there and silently takes it, something you wouldn't have seen in the original. The absence of the main character aside, this series has just too many moving parts, too many subplots, the vast majority of which don't make the show in any way better. This series shouldn't have been made and it would have been better if Justified had never left Harlan alive.

Horrible series. No where near justified.
