    I remember Virginia Graham and her two talk programs, this one and its predecessor, Girl Talk. They aired during the '60s and early '70s on TV stations owned by RKO General. It aired in the Boston area on weekday mornings on their old Channel 7, WNAC-TV, back when they were an ABC affiliate.

    • @wmbrown6
      @wmbrown6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "Girl Talk" had been syndicated by ABC Films, and in New York aired on WABC Channel 7. After Miss Graham left in 1969, the producers replaced her with actress and onetime "I've Got A Secret" panelist Betsy Palmer; the show only lasted for one more year.
      I do seem to remember, from old New York Metro TV Guides, "The Virginia Graham Show" airing on WOR Channel 9.

    Virginia Graham was a good person and extraordinarily funny and entertaining. On this topic, however, like so many people of her era, she was tragically and dangerously ignorant. At least she allowed the topic on her show and she was open to audience members voicing opinions so contrary to her own (and three cheers for June Lockhart)!

      My mother was very good friends with Virginia going back to the mid 70's. She was quite extraordinary, funny, larger than life. I spent a lot of time with her. She was certainly a product of her time but she did have many gay and lesbian friends. This was filmed before I met her. Seems to me that by the time I got to know her her views softened. June Lockhart is a treasure!

      Bull a good person would not display her ignorance and homophobia on national television. A good person would never say or believe homosexuality can be cured, or that gays will destroy civilization.

    What fascinating footage, and historically impactful as well. This is one of those occasions where things truly benefit from the lack of what you later get with bilge like the Bill Maher shows where he and others often need to try to pop in with wisecracks and one-liners for the audience to lap up. This is a tough conversation all around and they aren't trying to be anything else. Some of the terminology isn't quite what they would be today, but honestly you still have these types of conversations in many places now - some things never change.
    Nice to see June Lockhart.

    Stumbled on to this. What a find. I don’t know much about Virginia G but was surprised she was so closed minded. On the other hand, the minister is incredibly articulate and really on point. The comedian and June Lockhart are open minded and calling out VG’s bigoted view point.

      First of all, she had to present a the decent because it was illegal to show homosexuality in a favorable light in media until 1970. The fact that she even had this on her show showed she was a supporter..
      In case you didn't know congress passed a law making it illegal to show heavy people in an attractive light, homosexuality or androgynous people in a positive light after the market crash of 29. People were furious with congress. Congress however blamed lose morality and God's reckoning on the crash. They paid newspapers and Hollywood to only show the iconic views they became famous for and they paid shrinks to change to change the medical books from masterbation being a sign of mental re- card- a- tion. (Google censors) and homosexuality the characteristic of the most creative artistic people, to a mental illness. This law was to last for 40 years. Hence why the sexual revolution happened in the 70s. Because the law had ended. In order for her to have this topic on her show in the 60s she had to voice against it.
      You also missed her point. She wasn't anti gay. She was anti segregation. Against separating people from the church.

      One irony in all this - the show she had been on up to that time, "Petticoat Junction," had been cancelled, and CBS put in its old time slot a new series called the "Mary Tyler Moore" show where, in its first five seasons, one of the co-stars was Cloris Leachman as her eccentric landlady Phyllis Lindstrom. The irony? 12 years before, Miss Leachman had been replaced as the mom on "Timmy and Lassie" by Miss Lockhart. Now, in 1970, turnabout was fair play, with a show featuring Miss Lockhart being replaced on the CBS schedule with a new show featuring Miss Leachman.
      Even Billy Mumy of "Lost In Space" said Miss Lockhart was far "wilder" than her strait-laced persona as exemplified in the roles she played on TV would suggest, and once recalled a time she took him to - gasp! - a rock concert.

We are tought not to hate them but they hate other people and will not let them have their opinion on the subject. It has to be the same opinion as they have! Pfff it's beginni g to tire me out the whole subject of alphabet people. Just be what you wanna be and don't push your life on others!

      Why is it okay to push heterosexuality on others then? People who share your viewpoint on this topic are very hypocritical. How about YOU not push your lifestyle on people? And where are you getting the idea that we hate you? I've never heard that one before. What we hate is people like you shoving your ancient opinions on us and using the Bible as your excuse to justify hate. If you believe in the Bible that's fine but stop forcing others to believe in your ancient ideology.
