There was a small fish boat next to the crash site at the time of the accident. The fisherman’s boat was rocked by the wave created from the plane hitting the water and he said he was lucky the plane didn’t hit him.
They weren’t pilots. They were passengers in uniform who happened to be sitting in the cockpit. Pilots would have been much more proactive and professional.
How could they not notice the throttle position? I am a layman-and even noticed that it reminds me of when pilots proceed with take off roll - and the flaps have not been extended-
@@dan797 uhm yeah but the video closed in on the throttles so you are way more focused on that. Doesn't mean it's not hard to understand both pilots didn't notice but we are at an advantage anyway. Not in stress, Focus on the throttles instead of a sudden disruption fron what was expected, it just makes it more obvious. It should have been something to notice for them too, but it showed in tests that other pilots did not notice either due to their engine read outs. You can say they should have seen the throttles being split but I'm just saying it's easier to look at things in hindsight in general when you know what they should have done if you aren't in that same Stresssituation where you can't predict hoe you will react and what you (think you) see. The "I would have done/seen" from a position such as ours is not always fair to those in the situation. Even in this one, given that no pilots saw the split when it happened. What suprised me though was the added left bank. That was weirder than not noticing throttles, but even then I acknowledge I am in bed, relaxed and comfortable, not in an upset airplane.

Bottom line, this aircraft should have been properly fixed long before the crash. It fits the saying of an accident waiting to happen. It’s tragic that the airlines negligence cost so many lives. I cannot imagine anything more terrifying than being in an inverted plane.
you're right, they should have. they were flying over water though so maybe didn't have a good sense of the horizon (or maybe they were in the clouds) but even so, it was daytime and visibility good so there isn't a good argument here for them losing spatial awareness....they just didn't monitor their instruments like they should have
@@clarsach29 all large commercial flights is conducted under IFR, so it’s irrelevant whether they can see the water see the horizon etc pilots train never to depend on outside cues unless they are actually on the approach or departure or other conditions that is deliberately under visual flight rules

(JFKjr augured in his plane because he couldn't compare attitude, altitude, course and speed off the dash and just fly the course)....

What amazes me is that given Sriwijaya was under Garuda ownership during the time of the accident, I would have assumed their best practices in terms of training, maintenance would be cascaded to all of their subsidiaries. That being said, the capacity for air travel in Indonesia is overstretched and as is the demand and resourcing for air crew. But I also put it down to Indonesian folk's attitudes (or lack of questioning attitude) and their general ethos of running things on neglect as the cause of this accident. They hadn't rectified or isolated the root cause of the malfunctioning throttles, nor realised their significance, until it was too late. There's still a systemic underlying issue in their safety culture, which didn't suprise me when the EU banned all Indonesian carriers flying within its airspace nearly 2 decades ago. You only have to look at the list of recent air disasters attributed to inoperative or defective equipment to understand that it's a tolerable condition. Adam Air 574, Air Asia 8510. Old folklore used to say that you should never dip your toes into the Indian Ocean near Parangtritis Beach, lest you want to be swept away by a rip tide. Javanese Aviation Lore would seem to suggest that you should never fly narrow bodies over the Java Sea, lest you want to deviate from level flight😉. Sort it out lads!
After Aeroflot and some South American carriers Indonesian Air Travel is some of the riskiest in the world. The EU and the USA has previously banned their operations in their countries. Substandard maintenance was one of the reasons why.

keep in mind that all these things happened in extreme whether condition. lightning flashing in the cockpit, thunder deafening the pilots' ears, this chaotic flight lasted for only 4 minutes before it eventually slammed into the water below
Agree with everything said below regarding their inattentiveness to asymmetric throttles right in front of them and a roll that became unrecoverable because they had no situational awareness. This type of accident usually happens at night when there's no visual horizon but, these idiots, killed all those people because they were asleep at the controls. This may have been a case of automation complacency. So used to the aircraft taking care of itself they missed the obvious.

so many automation in cockpit to ease the workload of flight crew, makes the crew rely heavily and trust the plane system very much... it's very sad indeed watching the accident of Adam Air 574, Air Asia 8501, and this Sriwijaya Air 182 had similar pattern, and happened during the monsoon period.. (late december to early january)..
It all happened so quickly, if only the pilots had noticed one engine throttling back beforehand it could have been prevented. So many problem reports in the logs as well.
I am reading this and it's difficult to believe that 2 'qualified' pilots allowed this situation to develop. Whatever happened to old fashioned BASIC flying skills??
This is crazy. I’m a novice pilot and I feel I wouldn’t make that mistake. Always scanning. It’s not like they were in the middle of a chaotic situation. They were just sitting there.
The investigation needs to be completed first. The ATC did not tell the Coast Gard plane to hold short on the taxiway. The JAL plane was cleared to land. Also apparently some of the ground lighting was not working. The massive evacuation of the JAL plane was nothing short of a miracle. The outcome of this crash could easily have been much worse.

More the case that the pilots BRAINS were lemons. Had they reacted like they should have and been paying close attention to everything , they might have been able to save it and get everyone on the ground safely.

I agree with these comments, but I'm wondering, if air over the wing does indeed produce lift, why not try at least, to roll the plane the rest of the way over and pull out of the dive? And what could it hurt to try? Actually, if I remember correctly, there was an incident of just that thing happening, and the pilots pulled out of the dive.😳

Airbus throttles DO NOT MOVE during auto throttle use but you da… well monitor your displays to make sure they are doing what you commanded them to do!!! Did any of these guys read the write ups in the ABD before flight?? That would have maybe clued them in to really be on the lookout for auto throttle problems???? They should have briefed this and I would have my FO HAWK those throttles during the flight!!?! Totally avoidable and UNACCEPTABLE!!!

The whole concept of electronics frying an aeroplane, instead of a flight crew, is garbage. The ideology that's computers can out-think humans and are qualified to fly aircraft has been proven WRONG over and over again through umpteen airline crashes and thousands of deaths. Yes, electronics are useful...TCAS... ground proximity warning...sink rate etc...but ultimately FLIGHT CREW should be flying the aircraft, not a bloody computer. If this flight crew had been flying the aircraft instead of a stupid frigging computer, we wouldn't even be watching this video ...

Harsh, but it was 2012! ZERO reasons for a pilot with 18k hours to miss. Zero.
This is a very old plane, so wear and tear is inevitable. These parts are meant to be taken out and replaced during maintainence, like 12V batteries on a car. Are you going to blame the car manufacturer if an old 12V battery causes issues for an old car?
When I see cases like this, I feel so badly for the passengers who are suddenly upside down. They must be so confused and terrified.

No, the plane needs to be airworthy if you are flying passengers (or even not flying passengers). Indonesia has a history of these issues.

This is a very old plane, so wear and tear is inevitable. These parts are meant to be taken out and replaced during maintainence, like 12V batteries on a car. Are you going to blame the car manufacturer if an old 12V battery causes issues for an old car?
@@Blank00 Like you said, these parts must be replaced by the maintainence crew, and they were not! Also if a car battery dies nobody get hurt
