    Now I know my childhood VCR was a VR2020, it had an IR receiver and the play button was second from right, they swapped the button positions and did account for in the video, also the 2020 didn't have any trick play features.
    Long story short, there exist different versions of this instruction tape to take into account for different features / design features / button locations. Also the earlier version has some remnants of written language. It also has some awesome synth music in the in- and outro which is criminally missing here.

    Interestingly, it doesn't explain how to hook up the VCR to the TV set neither how to set up channel presets in the VCR.

    Philips used the same creepy synthesizer sounds and gibberish on their LaserDisc (then called MagnaVision for the U.S. market) demo disc featuring Leonard Nimoy. Except, in that case it was a glowing rock producing the gibberish, and Leonard translated it into English. This tape also would've been much more effective if they had translated the gibberish into English (or whatever the local language of the market it was being sold in).

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As these were sold across Europe, I think the idea was that the tape wouldn't need any language translation.

    Had a VR2020 back in the 80's. Pity the format never developed into something better. DTF was a great idea with it's perfect stills and picture search, the machines were just to compicated from an electronics point of view and unreliable. Could have been good if a high band version was released (with metal tape) and Hi-fi sound. These were heavy machines and some ex-rental ones became available later on (in the late 80s) in a local electronics shop for £10 each. Worth more than that for scrap. So many components in them to salvage.

    Very handy: If you don't know how to play a tape, watch the instruction video first. 😄 I really like symbols but this video is made to reduce the costs to a maximum, to avoid the use of a language so it can be shipped to any country. Pieuw, Pieuw, Pieuw.

    Oh... and while we were on the topics of videotapes about videos... couldn't these demo tapes be deinterlaced to 50 FPS, and uncropped as well?

    • @pHD77
      @pHD77 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless the tapes contain actual content shot on video, 50fps would be a waste of time, since film content IS shot at 25fps (well, actually shot at 24fps, but the film was sped up to fit the PAL standard).

    That brings back memories, I first watched this when I was about 8 or 9 on my grandparents rented VR2021. 4:25 - that's a very short programme as a counter reading of 0324 isn't that long, I remember a reading of 1810 was 30mins (for a VCC480). It must be counting pulses from the take up reel as it definitely slows down the further you go into the cassette. I might still have the instruction manual for a PYE 22VR20 which lists counter numbers against time for the various cassette lengths. The "Go-To" function was brilliant and much better than VHS or Betamax at the time. This is definitely for the VR2022 not the VR2021 as it's showing picture search and freeze frame that wasn't available on the VR2021. The stop button did behave like a pause button even on the VR2021 as you'd have to press stop twice to make it unlace and the stop could also be used as a record/pause function to cut out an advert break.

    Sadly what you are now doing here is now ancient history but it's still good stuff for those still left alive to remember it! I worked for a company back in the 80's running 50% VHS and 50% V2000's, maintenance wise there wasn't a lot in it to be frank and I was the area engineer doing it.

    sorry to not react on something else than technical point, but the sound is incredibly muffled again.
    seems the machine used was a 23xx ?
    i leave you an exemple of what you could normally get with sound : th-cam.com/video/22E6z6QaLUk/w-d-xo.html

      This was not played on the same machine as the previous V2000 tape I released, which was transcribed by a channel viewer. I believe the original instruction tape has a deliberately muffled sound. Sound on other tapes is much brighter. This was played on a VR2324.

    Dropout compensation is amazing for technology that's so old!.

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pretty much all video recorders have drop-out compensators, though some are better than others. Some very early ones were monochrome. Then through the 70s-90s they used a delay line with colour included. A few high end semi-pro and many studio decks use a digital dropout compensator associated with the digital timebase corrector (either internal or external).

    OMGOMGOMG!!!
    I remember this instruction video! I got vague memories from when I was still sucking my thumb watching this!?!
    I have one of those videos it is sadly broken but I still have close to 100 casettes. This thing only got outcompeted because the less inovative VHS format decided on buying itself into the porn market...
    But this system was a very important part of my childhood... It together with the TV was my principal baby sitters...
    6_49 VHS never had this function despite the protestations from people liking VHS until near to the end of that system's rule of the market (being kicked out by incoming CDV and laserdisk and eventually DVD) But the quality of the V2000 system was way ahead of its time.

    I don't know why I have to think of Agnetha Fältskog when I think of the cartoon character, who said to the Presenter in the German TV Show Kangaroo from 1985: That's not really Swedish.

    Nice to see that again! We had a VR2020 back in the 80:s, But why do you complain about the timer function? I think its quiet logic and simple! But I was the only one who learned to program the timer, so had to do all the programming! Later ve had a VR 2334 i think it was. I guess you have one to.

      @@video99couk Same reason I do it! TH-cam and modern codecs should support interlacing preservation too, not that there's a lot of demand for it.

    • @pHD77
      @pHD77 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sadly, TH-cam's codec at 480p/i looks horrid. In terms of look, it is almost similar to that of VCD. It has a somewhat "blocky" look to it and does not play nice with dark areas

    • @hidevidhidevid3808
      @hidevidhidevid3808 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So... In your opinion, is better to upscale analog video in order to prevent TH-cam loss of quality when you upload it in 480?

    • @lutello3012
      @lutello3012 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I hate to do it but yeah, I wish TH-cam would just use a more appropriate bitrate to begin with. I have videos saved from 10 years ago and the current bitrate on the same video is much lower now.@@hidevidhidevid3808
