True, although they also have tax, transport, import tax, website costs, employees, and sometimes property rent. However those online brands earn more.
High end fashion also has costs of designers who have to think about new idea's. The brands that follow those trends cut a lot of costs.
Anyways, buying it for 2,25 exl shipping and selling it for 27 is decent i guess

I once met with a Chinese American apparel manufacturer who happened to produce Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger & other top brand suits. Our meeting was held in his office, which was like any tailor’s shop. He ordered lunch for us & insisted on personally serving each of us. And he focused on us rather than himself. Turns out that he’s a multi-billionaire apparel tycoon. I was amazed because this very respected & wealthy man was so incredibly humble & willing to work with the small company that employed me. That’s about $4 per hat with container fees and landing. Not bad. Then you have to warehouse it, market it, pick it, and ship it. All those operations will add about $10 onto your costs. Then you have to consider daily operating fees like internet, utilities, truck transport, etc etc. if you sell it on Amazon, they take 40% of your top line when you account for ads and Amazon fees.
So you’d have to sell this hat for $30 to make $5 net per unit, realistically.

China has moved from a primarily handmade manufacturing country to a mostly high quality machine based manufacturing hub with high skilled workers with high pay. It's also why they are inflexible in MOQ because machined need a minimum amount to be profitable.
Don't get me wrong, Chinese labour still works long hours 6days per week and has less quality of life than the USA, but they also have comparatively more PTO and their cost of living and commuting is MUCH lower than the US or Europe.
If you want actual sweatshops, that's when buyers request last minute changes or custom labels added last minute for small quantities. That's when the big factories outsource this labour to "family businesses" who will see this manually using sewing machines, etc. they are often run by local groups who yes employ 15-18 year old kids who would be helping on their parent's farm otherwise. And sometimes younger if the gov couldn't force them into school. Factories hate doing that because it's a risk AND it cuts their profit margins but sometimes customers won't pay unless they get these last minute changes done. Or the manager was sloppy in his planning. Either way, China's sweatshops are closing because the workers are retiring and it's not as sustainable anymore as a small family business. Some rural areas have tried setting up these small "community style" factories such as the one in Xinjiang with the Muslim population to alleviate the lack of development there. It backfired. Not because they're abusive but everyone is conditioned to think that there's only one China and what's good for my dad would probably be good for you, right? Right?
Anyway, nowadays, China is asking too much to pay for the salaries of its workers and are under intense scrutiny by international buyers. They also insist that their children go to college instead of working in factories which is why ...
A lot of Western production is shifting towards Vietnam, Cambodia and sometimes India where they can still get those low cost goods for low quality goods, but there's also less regulation and less attention because Vietnam and Cambodia are simply not as threatening as the country with the nukes even though it's essentially the same thing from 20 years ago.

The trick is to find out where the product is REALLY made. Knew a Western guy that was a tour guide through Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and all those cheap suit guys in Thailand are apparently outsourcing their orders to Vietnam to make cheaper and quicker.
He knew some of Vietnam tailors so if anyone touring Thailand wanted a suit he'd get it for them cheaper from Vietnam but get a kickbacks from the Vietnamese guys.
