There's an incredible documentary about the band, THE SPARKS BROTHERS, that just hit Video on Demand, and it tells how they've evolved and changed musical styles over 50 years (!!!), with a lot of interviews with other famous musicians who are fans of theirs. I highly recommend it.
I was eleven years old when this song was released . The lead singer and key board guy are brothers . This song is a masterpiece .
always great to see a Sparks reaction. thanks!
this is a clip from the german music show "disco" in 1974. Sparks: 2 Brothers - Ron & Russel Mael -(+ band in early years) from LA; witty and quirky songs; still doing their thing.
I just wrote two minor "novels" about Sparks here (a comment which continues in my reply to it) where I mention that there are another 24 albums, and The 'FFS' co-lab with Franz Ferdinand and the album Ron and Russell produced for Noel.
I suggest you react to:
Sparks:
💖 'When do I get to sing My Way?'
💖 'The calm before the storm'
💖 'The Rhythm Thief'
💖 'Dick around' (it's nothing to do with sex, if you find a live performance, you also can watch Sparks at their best, LIVE, not a TV show)
💖 '(She got me) Pregnant'
💖 'Life With The Macbeths' (featuring Rebecca Sjöwall)
❤️ From their latest album I have two alternatives, one in each end of soft contra crazy:
💖 'Pacific Standard Time'
💖 'The Existential Threat'
With FFS: Also a choice between a little crazy humor and a soft.
💖 'Piss Off
💖 'Johnny Delusional'
And last but not least, Noel:
💖 'Dancing Is Dangerous'
Those all are of very varied from each other, and far from 'This Town...'.
You won't regret diving into Sparks's around 350 songs catalog, there is something for everyone!
Sparks are a California band and they're brothers. Saw them 4 times back in the 70s, so much fun live.
Musical geniuses, the band I’ve seen the most in live, play in same category with “”classic” artists such as David Bowie in my mind.
Lovely lady my best friend is in high school John Thomas ended up producing a couple of their albums after that if you want to check out there is one they did called
“My baby’s taking me home”
…
Just today I saw an online ad featuring this song! Most people have never even heard of Sparks, but APPLE knows how to sell stuff, and they chose to go with this one. Great music never dies.
(Sparks did contribute to disco, European style synth, but that would not happen for a few years yet. This is more glam.)
This is from Sparks's third album, 'Kimono My House', in spring 1974, which was the first they made in England. They had a bunch of singles released from this, also from their next, 'Propaganda', November 1974 (England + the rest of Europe) and January 1975 in The USA.
"They" are Ron and Russell Mael, two brothers from Los Angeles. To put the rest of their 25 studio albums in perspective, you don't need to BE young on the paper to make fresh music, only in heart and mind, they were born in 1945 (Ron) and 1948 (Russell). Today working on their 26th album and when I write this (February 5 2022) just to FINALLY start the tour with the latest album 'A Steady Drip Drip Drip', 2020, which has been postponed due to the situations worldwide.
'Sparks'' started 1969 as 'Halfnelson', soon had a reputation of being different, at the least. They had a group of fans, but it was limited. The band at that time was Ron and Russell, the brothers Jim and Earle Mankey (the latter is a known producer nowadays) and Harley Feinstein.
After have been looking for someone willing to have them in their stable and release an album for some time a new producer was pushed by his girlfriend to listen to them. He saw something in the original approach to music, and a young Todd Rundgren, now legendary musician and producer, came to produce Halfnelson's first album, self-named, 1971.
That didn't sell much at all.
The band was told to change their name, since the label people thought it was too strange. They suggested "The Sparks Brothers", since they had a crazy humor, like 'The Marx Brothers'.
The band HATED it. (Edgar Wright used that for title to his documentary, with a wink in the eye 😂)
They agreed to only 'Sparks'.
The second album, 'A Woofer in a Tweeter's Clothing' didn't sell any better, however they got a chance to play in England. And had a very different response.
Ron and Russell, not the rest of the band, were offered to come over and pick a new band, and a contract.
They took the chance, and the rest is history!
'Kimono My House', 'Propaganda' and 'Indiscreet' were recorded with the English band, of some considered as their best band and best period.
Personally I think that has a lot to do with which period of life you remember them together with other stuff, as most positive. They have made awesome music, everything different from everything else, always looking forward, for over 50 years.
The third English produced album, 'Indiscreet', flopped. That Tony Vinsconti produced didn't help, despite his growing reputation of being one of the best.
Ron and Russell moved back home to put together a new band again. 1976 they released 'Big Beat', with a totally different sound, havier, more rock.
It did alright, 1977 'Introducing Sparks', new band, came out. Not a success, but some people still had their interest in the band. In an interview with a German journalist they revealed that they were going to work with Giorgio Moroder, which was lie, but a dream, after they heard his production of Donna Summer's 'I Feel Love', a new sound, with synthesizers.
The journalist replied: "Strange, I know him, and he hasn't mentioned anything about that." The guys had to explain that they had thought of getting in contact with Moroder, and she said that she could help them with that.
1978 Ron, Russell and Giorgio Moroder wrote and recorded the groundbreaking album 'No. 1 In Heaven', only synthesizers, Russell's voice and the amazing drummer Keith Foley, who was the drummer for Donna Summer as well.
That album was the beginning of a new era, and has had a huge influence on many bands after that.
It wasn't the hit they hoped for, which the response from the record company, where no one "knew how to label it", and it was forgotten about until a new, younger, executive found, listened to it and loved it. Finally released 1979. Not long before the mysterious "Noel" released her first album 'Is There More To Life Than Dancing?' with the hit 'Dancing Is Dangerous', produced by the Ron and Russell Mael, who had been most observant and teachable when working with the Master Giorgio Moroder.
That's a totally forgotten album, the single hit is a disco gem, danceable, catchy and beautiful. You've got all reasons to look it up!
After this era Ron and Russell stayed with synthesizer, but went back to have a band behind them as well. They have musicians that fit with their music they have created a the current time, usually some members stay for a while, over a couple of albums, then times have changed, so the band.
2015 Sparks, only Ron and Russell, collaborated with Franz Ferdinand, the Scottish indie band.
What was meant to be one or two songs, maybe for a single, became (the second release) a 16 songs album and a tour on both sides of the pond.
2017 'Hippopotamus' saw daylight, became a smash hit, the first time since 1974 Sparks was on the Top Ten list in England. 'A Steady Drip Drip Drip', 2020 followed up on the list.
In between all this they have made a couple of albums that didn't reach expectations, but also a bunch of enormously good music, that cought the attention at different places on the earth, at different times, an interesting phenomenon actually.
2021 was a special year. In January Edgar Wright's documentary on them premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and got a positive response.
It has been shown on theaters all over the world, and had positive response from the audience, however the critics has varied with Sparks's popularity in general. BUT during the year their followers on TH-cam increased to more than the double.
It was commonly released just when restrictions were eased up, and people went to the movies just to see any movie. That gained Sparks, many people that never heard of them instantly became fans!
In July, at the Cannes Film Festival their musical movie 'Annette', directed by Leos Carax, staring Adam Driver, Marion Cottilard and Simon Helberg, premiered, actually opened the festival, with standing ovations. Carax was honored the prize for 'Best Director', and Ron and Russell 'Best Sountrack'!
'Annette' isn't for narrow-minded people, if you don't know anything about neither Sparks nor Leos Carax, you preferably should do a little homework first. AND it's a movie that SHOULD be watched at least twice to be appreciated as the masterpiece it is. Many people consider it "bizarre", some like it despite they have that opinion, some don't get it at all, some hate it, AND some LOVE it. It seems to be nothing in between.
So, now you who didn't know about Sparks know a little.
Both 'The Sparks Brother's and 'Annette'are streaming!
Hi Anna, I appreciate your attention to the Noel album, which is criminally neglected by the Maels for some reason when it’s I think one of their five best albums, a disco symphony. Just because it’s a different vocalist it shouldn’t have been a throwaway, it’s so beautiful. Ron didn’t play on I Wanna Hold Your Hand but they still called it Sparks. Its obscurity even among Sparks fans is really a tragic loss.
They just wrote a rock opera musical starring Adam Driver that's coming out in the US next month! This song came out in the 70s but they have always been ahead of their time, so it's not that strange to call it an 80s song.
Awesome version - good choice! When I got into Sparks this was my first album. Ron on keyboards is just like he appears and Russell has that voice. But the fact was that they wrote great (and unique) songs, had great musicians, and were a fun concert to see in the 70's and early 80's. I vastly prefer their first 4 albums to anything they did later.
That song got them to Number 2 in the UK charts , In 1974 .. It got them into the public eye and then sort of loaded in with the Glam scene thing for a while... There Disco stuff was ground breaking with Moroder making a land mark album No 1 in Heaven late 70s.. There are extra versions of this song about . more lyrics etc .. The lyric sheets are half the fun when following Sparks .. Very witty and massive word play.. Play Beat the Clock or Try outs for the Human race if you are into disco Sparks ..
This was in their glam rock period in the mid-70's. If you want their take on disco, check out "No. 1 in Heaven," produced by Giorgio Moroder in 1979. It was formative for disco, and practically invented the synth-pop genre.
The song was written by Ron, the deadpan keyboardist with the Hitler 'stache. Brother Russell is the singer with the amazing range. As others have posted, still going strong doing witty, totally unique tunes to this day.
It’s a Charlie Chaplain mustache!
@@kurtkish6970 About the same. But Hitler, being the better known figure, comes to mind to most people. John Lennon was said to have reacted "Bloody hell, it's Hitler on the telly!" to one of their TV appearances.
You’re not the first to laugh at the Keyboard player Ron Mael who had a striking Hitler like look about him back then!
No that was 1974
Black? Not sure what the colour of your skin has anything to do with it.
Glam not disco. 70s
