  • Ipswich went into the final game of the 1993/94 season with the daunting task of getting something from their match against a Blackburn side that would finish as Premier League runners-up. In the end a hard-fought point was enough to ensure safety as results elsewhere went their way. Footage includes highlights from Chelsea against Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge, where a last minute Mark Stein goal sent the Blades down instead of Ipswich.

People talk about Everton escaping but it was Ipswich who were the lucky ones.

When we think about survival Saturday 1994 everyone remembers Everton's comeback but under the radar you are right Ipswich were luckier than Everton tbh 10 without a win with 2 draws was very much relegation form. With 30 seconds left of the Chelsea v Sheffield Utd match they were doomed but Mick McGiven the then Ipswich manager after John Lyall had become Director of Football and the Ipswich fans owed Mark Stein and Glenn Hoddle a beer because Hoddle had challenged Stein to prove his fitness if he wanted to be considered for the cup final and his 2 goals was the perfect response it saved the tractor boys and sent the blades down.

phew Mick McGivern and Ipswich were very lucky to stay up that season their form collapsed in the run in 2 points from a 10 game winless run going into this one but fair play for grinding out a point against the league runners up. But as for Sheffield United well their addiction to draws cost them. The last gasp defeat against Chelsea was only their second loss in their final 12 games but a run of 5 draws on the spin in March cost them.
