    • @PaulTheFox1988
      @PaulTheFox1988 5 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      I only upgraded to an RTX2070 from my R9 390 because I upgraded to a 1440p monitor and needed the extra grunt for that resolution, but at 1080p the R9 390 is an awesome card and still apparently compares favourably to an RX580, and even performs well at 1440p in less demanding titles.
      One of my favourite GPU's is that R9 390, and it was rock solid for reliability, better than this 2070 has been, some of the older drivers caused my system to BSOD almost every hour regardless of load, although the current one is pretty good for stability.

    • @PaulTheFox1988
      @PaulTheFox1988 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@mrmagoo-i2l I would argue that even 6GB is fast becoming inadequate, and even 8GB is insufficient for some titles, which is crazy how in just roughly 10 years since I became a PC enthusiast we've gone from 512MB being good enough for even Crysis to run well to 8GB being exhausted in some titles. That's a 16x increase in VRAM in relatively short order, it kind of makes AMD's decision to go with 8GB in some of the R9 290x models seem a pretty sound choice, as even the 200 series isn't that far behind the 300 series.

    Glad your internet is back up and running well. It's easy to see why the 970 was/is popular, good value, solid and flexible. The option of switching to SLi mode if needed is useful, even today. Although only certain games are SLi compatible, this does include the Call Of Duty series, Tomb Raider series, Borderlands, GTA V, Battlefield Series, Rainbow Six Seige, Batman Series etc. In Sli mode, two 970's running at 1080 is pretty equally to a 1070Ti. With the 970 available for under £100 used, it's a decent enough card to start off with if someone is trying to make their money stretch building a VR setup. So in answer to your question, I would definitely touch a 970 with a barge pole!

    Pro tip, you can run fallout 4 at up to 90fps without any engine issues. They retooled it with the release of fallout 4 vr. Seeing as vr games "have" to run at 90fps to avoid motion sickness, they tweeked the engine to handle 90 fps. That tweak was also patched into the regular version of fo4 as well.

    @lc9245 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Finally bid farewell to my 970. I don't play extremely demanding game, RDR2 at most, though that sounds contradictory. The issue that finally made me decided to change wasn't performance. For 1080p it is just right, serving me loyally for 6 years. However, to maintain that level of performance, the 970 had to exert itself all the time. Even simpler games like Apex can have frame drops due to the 970 fake 4GB VRAM and inability to keep up. If I keep the fan running at a reasonable level, the card reaches 80 degrees Celsius at 90-100% usage easily, going into the 90 sometime. That's not great, and eventually its performance suffered somewhat despite my effort to give up a clean every few months and new thermal paste. The new cards much more efficient, they can perform at the same level at lower wattage, thus lower temperature. That alone was worth the trouble of hunting down cards at MSRP.

      AMD has confirmed that the next generation Xbox is going to be running a 8 core zen 2 chip, so I don't see why they wouldn't do it for the PS5 either. As for a 5700xt, I don't think they would. It's confirmed for a 2020 release, so to drop manufacturing costs of the 5700xt for a $500 console seems a bit farfetched. Maybe they'll pair it with a vega 56 or 64 or even the 5700.

    The 970 was a hidden gem. It often delivers 80% or more of the performance of a 980, at a much lower price. If you buy one used today, you can often get them for $80-$100 where a 980 would hit you for $120-$140, making the 970 a much better value.

    In 2019, there's a lot of people attempting to sell their used GTX 970 cards for over 100 dollars but realistically the price point this GPU is more likely to sell would be below 80 dollars because the 80 to 120 dollar region is filled with video cards that are competing on a value basis with performance comparable to the GTX 970. You have to keep in mind that this card uses two PCIe power cables to charge it so there is a more limited market place for the legacy card.

    Worth noting that the 970 is a bit power hungry. 150 watts for a basic model which is the same as the substantially more powerful 1070. That said, they can be found cheap on Craigslist and FB Marketplace while delivering nice numbers and chewing through even demanding video editing. --- Big sticking point for me is that it gives nearly identical performance to a RX 480 which can be had a fair bit cheaper. Likewise, an RX580 gives you a bit better performance for cheaper in a 4gb model or the same cost and even better numbers in a 8bg model.

People always dub it as a 1080p card but I don't think that quite does it justice. Also great for emulation, Zelda botw at 1440 gets real close to constant 60fps or 30fps at 4k, anything from GameCube runs 4k no prob. I'll happily run with this card till it dies.
