Mariah to me is a all around better singer. She writes her own music which Whitney never did. Mariah’s voice is more versatile. Mariah can achieve power like Whitney, but Whitney could never do the whistles and whispers. To me Whitney is just a voice. Mariah is a true musician.
Mariah can achieve way more power than what a light soprano is supposed to achieve. You can't ask her to belt like a spinto soprano (Whitney) because her throat simply is not made for that. What Mariah's voice can naturaly do: enveloping resonant sound, extreme control in high pitchs and extreme agility; she is a master at. In fact she's also quite a master at things she's not supposed to be able to do, like having a manly low register. But what sets Mariah apart is that she's not only a good singer. She's just a great artist: amazing songwriter, has one of the best ears in pop music hence the very melodic improvisations, and is a very very creative person. Not only the lyrics, the sounds (like creating songs that are full in falsetto which was something very innovative when she first did it), or inviting rappers to her songs which was also her idea, an idea that the label was against at first btw. She's the whole package.

Iam sure at this point Whitney was tired off all the hype in the industry that this new talent was a direct threat to her career. Tommy Mottolla said that when they were developing Mariah, Whitney was the model. That says it all.
Well Mariah also said: when I started they tried to couple me with some of Whitney's producers which I didn't necessarily agree with. In the end, most of Mariah's artistry comes from Mariah herself, that's why Mariah can't be anyone but her. You can try and copy Whitney and well, if you have the voice (not easy) and the producers (easier), you will be close. Let's remember this: At this point, Whitney was 5 years in the game as a superstar, two multi-platinum albums in the 80's, one of the most competitive decades for music. Basically, she'd been compared to em, and she'd seen them come and go. At this time, Mariah was the new kid, just another one Whitney was compared to. When you're at the level Whitney was at, you don't have time to be thinking about stuff like rivalries, critics and other bull, cuz that'll throw you off your course. That's what colored her response, not any beef with Mariah, but the fact that she can't focus on things like that. Whitney was always civil, hence why she's so respected.
P.S. and for those who want to act like Ms. Carey was some little victim, there's definitely an interview on here where someone asks her about the comparisons and she say, 'There's worse singers to be compared to.' This after, according to one of Whitney's producers, she had asked specifically to hear tracks from I'm Your Baby Tonight BEFORE it was released. So... she ain't as innocent of shade as y'all would like to think.

First, your shade at the drugs reference is basic at best. I was referring instead to her, at that point, having both the MOST successful female single and soundtrack, male, female, OR group of all time. For every one record Whitney sold in the states, she basically sold another outside of it, which very rarely happens.

Mariah to me is a all around better singer. She writes her own music which Whitney never did. Mariah’s voice is more versatile. Mariah can achieve power like Whitney, but Whitney could never do the whistles and whispers. To me Whitney is just a voice. Mariah is a true musician.

Mariah can achieve way more power than what a light soprano is supposed to achieve. You can't ask her to belt like a spinto soprano (Whitney) because her throat simply is not made for that. What Mariah's voice can naturaly do: enveloping resonant sound, extreme control in high pitchs and extreme agility; she is a master at. In fact she's also quite a master at things she's not supposed to be able to do, like having a manly low register.
But what sets Mariah apart is that she's not only a good singer. She's just a great artist: amazing songwriter, has one of the best ears in pop music hence the very melodic improvisations, and is a very very creative person. Not only the lyrics, the sounds (like creating songs that are full in falsetto which was something very innovative when she first did it), or inviting rappers to her songs which was also her idea, an idea that the label was against at first btw. She's the whole package.

Whitney went on to sing the Star Spangled Banner at the Super Bowl the next year which launched her career into the stratosphere and she also became an International movie star with the whole Bodyguard phenomenon. After the success of the Bodyguard and Waiting to Exhale she also became one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood receiving 10 million for the Preachers Wife which was pretty big at the time.

There is an interview that Mariah did with TV AM in 1990 (you can find the clip on TH-cam) and when the interviewer brought up the Whitney Houston comparison Mariah at first seemed really offput and bothered and then she seemed sort of resigned saying that there were worse singers to be compared too. Just because Whitney’s voice is more “soulful” does NOT make her a better singer. Her timbre may be more preferable than Mariah’s to some but power and volume output doesn’t matter because they’re separate vocal fachs. Mariah is the better technical vocalist

I remember this time well. Whitney was not worried about Mariah Carey. This was before the Body Guard success. Iam sure at this point Whitney was tired off all the hype in the industry that this new talent was a direct threat to her career. Tommy Mottolla said that when they were developing Mariah, Whitney was the model. That says it all.
Well Mariah also said: when I started they tried to couple me with some of Whitney's producers which I didn't necessarily agree with. In the end, most of Mariah's artistry comes from Mariah herself, that's why Mariah can't be anyone but her. You can try and copy Whitney and well, if you have the voice (not easy) and the producers (easier), you will be close. You can try to copy Mariah but you will fail miserably since you would need Mariah herself producing your career to actualy be able to mimic her.
