  • NZSEE is pleased to present the 3rd webinar in the 2022 webinar series "An Introduction to Seismic Hazard Analysis seminar presented by Professor Brendon Bradley"
    Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis (PSHA) is a method used to estimate the level of ground motion with a specified probability of exceedance. Seismic hazard analysis is used to inform earthquake design standards and is sometimes carried out to provide a more specific and nuanced understanding of the local hazards to inform building and infrastructure design and risk assessment.
    The objective of this webinar is to broaden engineering professionals understanding of what makes a hazard analysis, to uncover what lies “beneath” the numbers, and broaden practitioners and researchers understanding of real-world earthquakes.
    The presentation covers the basic principles of the physics and wave propagation, looking at some of the interesting real phenomena, discuss how this knowledge and data is used to devise models, and what they represent.
    This promises to be an interesting follow on to the recent NZSEE/SESOC/NZGS seminar series which explored the possible impacts of the new NSHM on earthquake engineering practice (recordings for this will be made available soon). It will be helpful precursor to a companion webinar by Matt Gerstenberger of GNS which will provide a bit more scientific detail on the 2022 NSHM itself, and this new world leading science.
    The webinar is presented by Professor Brendon Bradley of the University of Canterbury. Brendon is also the director of QuakeCoRE: NZ Centre for Earthquake Resilience, and a current member of the editorial boards of Earthquake Spectra and the Bulletin of the New Zealand Society of Earthquake Engineering.
    Brendon is a member of the Core NSHM team. This working group is primarily responsible for deciding the direction of the National Seismic Hazard Model framework, and for assimilating the outputs of the working groups into the final project deliverable.
    He obtained his BE(Hons) and PhD from UC in 2007 and 2009, respectively. During 2009-2011, he held positions at GNS Science in Wellington and a post-doctoral fellow at Chuo University in Tokyo, and in 2016-2017 was a UPS Visiting Professor at Stanford University.
    Brendon has consulting experience in seismic hazard analysis, ground motion selection, structural and geotechnical seismic response analysis, and seismic risk/loss assessment. His numerous awards include: 2021 ISSMGE Bright Spark Lecture Award, 2018 NZGS Geomechanics Award, 2016 Prime Minister’s MacDairmid Emerging Scientist Prize, 2016 ASCE Norman Medal, 2015 Shah Innovation Prize, 2015 TC203 Young Researcher Award, 2015 UC Teaching Award, 2014 New Zealand Young Engineer of the Year Award; 2014 Shamsher Prakash Foundation Research Award; 2013 Rutherford Discovery Fellowship; 2012 Ivan Skinner EQC award; 2008 NZSEE research prize. He is a Fellow of Engineering New Zealand (2021), and Fellow of the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering (2022).
