- Max Payne was released on July 23, 2001, 20 years ago today. Happy birthday, Max Payne! Here's Sam Lake (Max Payne) and James McCaffrey (Max Payne) with an anniversary message, and a special, familiar jacket.

@@shimec Alex Casey is most definitely a different character. But he was created as a reference to Max Payne. So it's kinda like Max in spirit? Alan Wake 2 was dope though. Remedy is like ome of the few devs left making awesome games.

Yes the first two games were the third game made him into a naive idiot, or apparently wasn't a literal detective, who got treated like an idiot, who worked with idiots. I just wish Rockstar give remedy the license to make an actual third game.
Mods! There were some amazing mods made for this game.
This game was as close to the "Matrix" experience we were looking for as teens in the 2000's so it's really a game of its own, in its own era. Now games are too formulaic to garner any attention when they deviate from the formulas that sell, and it's a cycle that feeds into itself as bigger companies took down independents with a vision and creative control. Now it's all screened, censored, watered-down of its original intent, and delivered to the public as a triple-A game worth 80 - 120 dollars pre-order with or without the DLC. Nothing new under the sun.

I still remember hoping on my PC as soon as I got back home from school. That 1 hour I spent every evening after school was the best time ever. I am sure a lot of you have had a similar experience. Let's make sure our kids know who Max Payne was. RIP James.

I remember one moment in the original game I walk in on dudes talking and one if them starts to say "ice em!" And before the one guy finishes saying "em" he gets cut off at the "e" as I one shot the goon and he sounds like "ice e-AAAH!"

Max, tired of his idealic life in sunny crime ridden land of Sao Pablo Brazil returns to his hometown of New Jersey and after some negotioation returns to his job a Cop, that doing so he would help Max get rid of the mobsters that want his head, either by taking them down (jail), striking a deal or just killling them all.
Meanwhile Max is pusuing, solving and fighting people all over NJ related to other cases his given to work on while on Duty. All the time he is under watch from Jim Bravura With Max back as a senior Detective he gets a high end apartment, after coments from his new partner that he shouldn't stay scatching around in a rusty hellhole of an apartment.
With a new home a new attitude and some nice stuff he starts to get his life back together and take care of himself.
He finds a new rthym working cases and going back to his apartment and ocasional night life. Over time he will oncover a cross-state wide fed/police conspiracy and realise a few in the Department are corrupt/on the take. It's up to him to, his new partner and anyone else not bent to blow it wide open and tie down and loose ends.
Coming christmas 2024 (C) rating (TBA).

With Matrox Millennium G200 16mb and Pentium 2 333mhz with 64mb memory, the struggle was real, especially outdoors where ground and half the scenery were not rendering at all 😂 The grit I had at the time to finish even the first few levels…
@@dmariachi Respectable machine you had there sir! My video card (must've been a 3dfx Voodoo) had 4mb and it ran the game literally at a couple fps, sometimes dropping to spf. But I sat through the first cutscene or rather slideshow, somehow hoping things would get better when gameplay started.
I was lucky enough that my PC barely played it decently but I feel you on going over to your friends to play a game that your PC can't play. Had to go over to my friends place to play a few later titles.

Remedy is one of a few developers that were and still are loyal to its fanbase and their best games. Unlike cockstar and their outsourcing of trilogy to the worst studio possile... war turd studios. Complete opposite.

i hope its not like b4b, where the studio promises that the game is being made in the hands of the original developers even though only about half a dozen of the l4d devs developed b4b. sam even says that only a few remain from the original team. having said this, i am a little hopeful for the remake

Max Payne was such a revolutionary game when it was released and its still one of my all time favorite games. Would love to see Sam Lake return as the model for Max in the next title.
It also gave birth to the revolutionary kung-fu mod. My god, I couldn't believe being able to do all those Matrix moves in a video game.

My dad was in the military so he didn’t believe in “violent censorship”, so I played the first one when I was like 6/7. The beginning traumatized me but I wanted to get revenge for him. Lol
just heard about James's passing and am absolutely devastated, Max's character helped me get through some seriously tough times and I couldn't be more grateful to him for that, Rest in Peace.
The journey of Max Payne through the cold nights are over,And I'm really grateful that it wasn't in vain, because his revenge guided us through it to move forward despite everything we had against us, thank you James, your voice will still be there in every cold night playing Max Payne chasing us like a ghost, being as eternal and profound as it can never be again, all because of you,RIP Mr McCaffrey.

I love seeing that Sam Lake looks completely unchanged in the 20 years since the first game - and seeing him don the iconic clothes again was awesome (and gave me an irresistible urge to install the first game!) My god man. I was 15 when this game dropped and downloaded it over Kazaa. I remember it was around 200MB and some of the music was ripped from the game. The game stuttered to hell on my system but still loved it.

This was great to see. Sam Lake hasnt aged a bit since the first game. Then theres the legendary James McCaffrey with that voice that just never really changes and is instantly recognizable.
To be honest, McCaffrey's voice did change a bit over the years. Noticeable if you compare MP1 to MP3. Still hella iconic, though, no argument there.

@@ChadVulpes It’s not so much that his voice changed, more like the “standard” on voice acting did. You gotta understand, when MP1 came out, video games were still regarded as kid toys, or for nerds and losers.
By the time MP2 came out, everyone was trying to be as story driven and cinematic as possible, thus required a little more flair compared to how MP in 1, spoke.

This game deserves to get a remastered version, such an iconic game this was and still is. One of the Best games I've haver played.

RIP James McCaffrey. It's so sad that he's gone and we'll never hear his concise and characteristic voice again. For me he and Remedy took Storytelling in Videogames on a whole new more adult level. Hope you're on a better place now.
Way too sad news to hear about James' lost battle with cancer. He made the character, he is the character... nobody will ever be able to truly replace him in his role, he was too iconic. Just like Michael Ironside with Sam Fisher or David Bateson as Agent 47.

Wow, it’s been 20 years since Max Payne came out, and I still remember being excited when I first played it. The game was revolutionary for its time. According to those times it was much cooler than recent “Cyberpunk 2077”, and there wasn’t so massive marketing campaign.

James McCaffrey passed away today after a battle with Cancer. I can't even begin to explain how much his work influenced me on such a deep and personal level. So of course, I feel compelled to try anyway.
James McCaffrey's talent, alongside Sam Lake's dark, poetic writing style, gave life to a brooding character and world of substance. A story with depth and deep philosophical musings. Max Payne. A character and story that has brought such richness and meaning to my life. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity I had to join Max on his vengeful, bitter and tragic journey over the years.
Rest in peace McCaffrey, or is it Max? May your family and loved ones always remember, and the world never forget, your undeniable talent in bringing complex and engaging characters to life for all to enjoy. I know I never will.
