Perfect Diane - some people just have horses for riding but they like doing so much more than that!

    Wow this is fantastic! :)
I love your horse videos because you do more with the horses than just riding them.
    Gets me all nostalgic...
I know that there´s all kinds of new computer aided machinery that could probably do it quicker or with less training needed for the operator or something, but still...
    Love it.

Your horses make me think of 'Gentle Giants'. With their heavy loads, they seemed to weave effortless through that pretty dense forrest. Would bet they got a treat when they got home :). Mrs. Tc

Nice horses. I think it's very ..umm almost romantic sort of work doing it that way. Maybe romantic isn't the right word... Nostalgic perhaps. One certainly couldn't any machinery in to the woods with damage hey. Thanks for posting this. Our lads enjoyed watching it. Cheers David

Thanks for that David. I'm glad your lads enjoyed it. Apparently there are still 500 million work animals in the world - it's only in the wealthy part of the world where we've left it behind. (Temporarily??)

Oof all that ivy! Here it causes all sorts of damage, being a non-native invasive. I have spent many an hour pulling and keeping them out of our tall timber in the land trust

Martha Anderson Interesting. We value it here as an important part of diversity. It's a fantastic late-flowering plant for honeybees - and never fails. great cover for small birds, too!

How big are your horses that you used?

Around 14 hands - plenty for this work

+WayOutWest Blowinblog thats interesting. I always thought 14hh was a bit on the small size for logging. what do you think the maximum comfortable weight they can pull is?

Not much, really. But mostly the work we do is more about getting small timber out through standing trees without damaging them. So brute strength isn't as important as agility and steadiness
