KHANDANA BHAVA - ARATRIKA - BELUR MATH

Khandana-Bhava-Bandana, is a famous song composed by Swami Vivekananda in 1898, as a soulful dedication to his guru Sri Ramakrishna. Khandana-Bhava-Bandana, translating to Breaker of the World's Chain is a prayer song based on the Raga Mishra Kalyani and Taala Ferta (Choutal, Tintal & Ektal) used in Indian Classical music.
Vivekananda's message through the poem, is meant to encourage those who are trying to emancipate themselves from the worldly bonds and the sufferings that follow, and spread the message of the emancipation.
Sourendro-Soumyojit was fortunate enough to have composed music for the documentary on Belur Math, in the 125th year of the institution. It was then, that they did not only record the composition, but also the inexplicable ambience in which the song is rendered everyday in Belur Math.

The main difference of listening the same prayer song in Belur math and any other place, is the vibe.. শত কণ্ঠের অনুরণন, পাখোয়াজের গাম্ভীর্য আর খঞ্জনির পর্যায়ক্রমিক ঝঙ্কার ওই হলঘরের দেওয়ালে প্রতিধ্বনিত হয়ে যে দৈবিক নান্দনিক অনুভূতি তৈরি করে তা অন্যত্র দুর্লভ। As per my knowledge the entire composition was written and composed by Swami ji himself.. what a unique creation in dhrupad style!🙏

One modest request to Sourendro and Soumyojit ... please change the title to ' Khandana Bhava Bandhana'. We the followers of Ramakrishna order always refer this central prayer song like this.
Khandana Bhava only means to cut off the universe which is something destructive in nature .. but Khandana Bhava Bandhana refers to its actual meaning which is to cut all our worldly attachments and make us ever free.
I hope you will understand my point.

It is dhrupad set to Raag Yaman. Swamiji had trained with the best people and knew how to play the pakhawaj very well. I have heard/ read that the song was composed after a brief moment of doubting Sri Ramakrishna's spiritual power after his passing away.
