  • Finally it is here! Pixar's Inside Out 2, the return to form and the closest we can get to a modern Pixar classic it seems have finally arrived! Going back to the roots of what worked before, with a concept that does legitmately have a lot of depth to explore within it. Is Pixar back? Or is this just another lazy sequel with that general audience mass appeal? Is this movie the answer to all of our prayers, and is it better than the original? Or are there any aspects I have complaints about or thoughts on how they missed the mark? Come learn all our ideas in this review, and speculative ideas for alternatives as we discuss How Inside Out 2 (Almost) Stuck The Landing...

Also, I think you’re misunderstanding the message about anxiety and the chair at the end of the movie.
The idea isn’t that anxiety is “bad” because Joy does put her planning skills to good use. She just needs to reel her back at times before she gets too out of hand. It’s possible to coexist with anxiety, just as long as you know how to control it, which is portrayed in that scene.

@@flowersoul6894 That is not what I meant, I’m talking about theatrical releases, because I too, enjoy their Covid movies, such as Luca and Soul(I will make an exception for Turning Red, I did not like that movie at all😭).
If you compare the older Pixar movies(1995-2015), to the newer ones(2016-Present), you will see a *lot* of differences, most of their original stories now, lack what the older stories did. The stories now are bland, one dimensional, focus *heavily* on representation, which is good, but most of it feels forced most of the time. Take Wades sibling from Elemental, there was no reason to add them and their girlfriend into the story/scene, except for representation, it’s the same with other characters, such as Buzz’s best friend and her wife in Lightyear(I get this was technically a sequel, but whatever).
Now compare recent(2021-present) Pixar theatrical releases to other studios, such as Illuminations Mario Movie, Dreamworks’ Puss N’ Boots: The Last Wish, and Paramounts Sonic the Hedgehog 2(yes most of these are sequels, but Pixar is making money by pumping out sequels as well, there’s a fucking Toy Story 5 in the making). The cast for the Mario Movie was not extremely diverse, but it was still a good movie, Puss N’ Boots: The Last Wish didn’t have lgbtq representation, but it was still a good movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s plot was generic, but well executed, which was what made it *a good movie*, and better than the first.
What I think Pixar doesn’t understand, is that they don’t need representation to make a movie good, they need to first write a script, then during character designing/development, they add in diverse characters that aren’t cookie cutter stereotypes. Do you see what I’m saying?
The old Pixar didn’t care if their characters were African American, Queer, Asian American, Mexican, etc., they cared about making movies with neat animation, a well fleshed out stories, and likable characters.
Older Pixar movies with great representation are The Incredibles and Ratatouille.
Now I don’t want to argue about something as stupid as liking movies because of “nostalgia”. I am 16, I do not like the older Pixar movies because of nostalgia. I like them because their stories are intriguing, the characters are fun, and worlds feel well fleshed out
After seeing Inside Out 2, I have to say, it was like a breath of fresh air, compared to other recent Pixar movies, but it’s not the best movie. The newer characters were not well fleshed out, other than “Val is so cool!” “Val made the Hockey Team as a Freshman!” “Val, Val, Val!” “Bree and Grace are Riley’s Friends!” “Bree and Grace are Moving!” “Let’s Hardly Show Bree and Grace in the Movie other than when Riley has a Panic Attack, or When she Wants to Fit in!”, I honestly forgot they existed until they showed up on screen again. I’d go on about other problems I had with the movie, but I’m tired, and this reply is already longer than it needs to be.
My point is that my comment is my opinion, as someone who wants to go into animation, character design, and/or script writing, and maybe work at a big company like Disney or Pixar one day, after seeing Inside Out 2, I feel there is hope for the company. If they focus on making movies that focus more on friendship and trust(like they used to be known for), and less on representation, then people, including myself, will think extremely highly of them once more.

I think if they had an extra 30-45 minutes it would have definitely been better. To add on what you said about joy fading away, I think it would have been great if she appeared to the deep dark secret and tried to confront it and basically learn accept her secret, instead of the dark secret being a gag. They also could've explored the back of the mind more and made it more interesting. I wish they did more with the other new emotions, besides anxiety, since she was already explored enough. I also wished they explored the islands while going to the back of the mind. If they did that it would've been a 10/10 instead of a 9/10.

Just because you have good parents and good friends, doesn’t mean you are automatically protected from all kinds of mistakes, accidents and traumas. Nor does it mean that you never feel scared or ashamed about something. Having a wonderful support network helps tremendously with understanding, dealing and coping with the things life throws at you - and admittedly can mean avoiding certain things that those who don’t have it will experience and make you more likely to be happier overall - but things will be thrown, no matter what. A person can have loving parents and great friends, and still be assaulted on the bus, or bullied at school. So Riley can absolutely have a deep dark secret. Anyone can.

I think you are a bit too caught up in the hypotheticals and concept artbook. I thought the movie did everything it needed to, and most of the concepts you pitch would only muddle the movie and moral. third act conflict with a non-established abstract darkness? We lose the conflict between joy and anxiety, which is very much the center of the movie's plot. Joy dying? Sure, i can mostly agree there, except for the amount of hoops they would have to go to in order to justify it or bring her back when it has been previously established that the adults in that universe still have joy, despite it not taking point (lead). Riley made the team? Are you completely sure they confirmed that when we only see Riley's reaction to the letter? Since you go so deep into hypotheticals, here's another option: it is an invite to return to camp next year talking bout her unready potential and the special case the coach can make to keep the trio of friends together despite going to different schools. That right there is a bit complicated an answer, but there are many similar simpler ones along the same lines.
Scope. That is the key. Everything you propose draws the scope too thin to function the way we have the movie now, but that doesnt mean the concepts cant be explored in later sequels as long as enough heart remains to keep the audiences around despite the growing anti-disney sentiment.

It is possible to take the scattered ideas and make a sequel, so current hollywood will be desperate to try if 2 proves to be a success. If the heart from the first 2 remains over all the culture wars, it will probably be fine for audiences, but breaking "the plan" is more likely to just backfire and ruin one of the few good stories disney/pixar has left. IP mining is a real problem. It doesnt matter if the CREATORS of that IP say it is being flushed down the drain and ruined, disney is going to mine it like their life depends on it, and some may say they are right about the concept but not the execution. Sometimes when you read things that aren’t meant for other peoples eyes you lack the context of their head space and cause yourself anxiety for no reason. If you were that anxious you should have just told me. Remember that for next time.” (That wording would lend credibility to the Riley made the team camp)

I'm still a little early arent I? I will be back soon' or something so she doesn't hang around.

    Spoilers for the movie:
One thing I like about Inside Out 2 is the fact that they sort of gave Riley more autonomy compared to the first film. So it's not so much that her emotions control her every action, but only give her the "drive" to do certain things. Which mean Riley is capable of acting on her own even when the emotions aren't controlling her and she's more like a self-driving car where the emotions only take the wheel when necessary. And the scene where Riley apologises to her old friends is done by herself without the emotions doing anything to the controller.
And yeah, I actually wept during Riley's breakdown and when Anxiety goes berserk. I also like that Anxiety isn't treated like a villainous character and the film doesn't try to pick sides by acknowledging the flaws of Joy and Anxiety while also validating their concerns (i.e. Anxiety saying that Riley cannot always be goofing around especially during serious situations, Joy wanting Riley to not be constantly plagued by worries and relieve tension a bit).
I also think that the movie is more beneficial to watch WITHOUT seeing the trailers. While I did see one trailer and a few TV spots, I went into the film completely blank to get a better impression.

When Joy said “I guess that’s what happens when you grow up, you feel less joy” hit me so hard. It made me choke up. But the climax when Riley has the anxiety attack really broke me. I was sobbing. I hadn’t cried that hard for a movie since the opening scene of Wakanda Forever. I went to a trade school this year and my anxiety had been at an all time high because of it. Inside out could have done with a longer run time instead of having such a breakneck pace, it felt like I couldn’t grab a peice of popcorn without missing a joke or important dialogue, plot points were brought in and thrown away or resolved extremely rapidly. I can forgive all of that, but the biggest problem with the movie is that the anxiety attack in the climax shouldn’t have been THE climax, it was fantastic and it definitely needed to be part of the climax but compared to the first where Riley is about to run away and all of the emotions are at their low, the second one is just a penalty box, and a quick confrontation between joy and anxiety. Not to say that an anxiety attack isn’t horrible (God knows I understand) but dude, it took place over 3 minutes

Boy this is going to be a long one, but because Inside Out is my all time favorite movie, I'am going to explain my opinion.
I think this is the first time I am going to almost completely disagree with you. In Pixar standard, yes it's doesn't have that kind of spark like in the past, BUT considering the state Disney is going now and how the world is improving, this movie is really good that makes me think "Oh yeah, this is Pixar movie that I remembered". I respect your opinion about the new cartoon characters, but I disagree that they are a major characters and them being a cartoon characters means they are only there for the laugh. This story is about Riley's emotion, so there's only going to be connect emotionally and I am very glad that this movie is pretty serious and only a few jokes (finally I have enough of jokes that I can't even understand and it's not funny at all). And I do agree a bit about Riley's darkest secrets can be explored more, BUT remember Riley's only 13 Years Old and it's the first time she hits puberty, so I think there's going many more years for her to experience her own darkest secret because in real life at least for me, when I hit puberty, I became more quieter and hold a lot of secrets so maybe we can see that when Pixar wants to make part 3.
I am gonna be honest too, the first movie is more sadder BUT this second movie too come really close to that level of sad because this really hit home to me who already grow up and still trying to accept my good and bad self.
And about the darkerst secret of Riley having a crush on a female video game character... I REALLY disagree with you, because do you even remember why one of the reasons why Lightyear failed ?? So I'm glad that Disney and Pixar doesn't take that route.
Enouhh of my rambling, sorry if it's too long and to everyone who hasn't watch it, I really recommend you all to watch the movie because it really worth to watch.
    Peace ✌️

@@Technoplane that doesn’t matter to me, i think its good they didn’t say that. The point of the film is that it doesn’t matter the outcome, they will love Riley no matter what. By keeping that information hidden from the audience we can’t make an expectation of riley “shes a great player” or “she’s not good enough”. the point is it doesn’t matter and it’s a journey
my point is that they DONT resolve anxiety like they did with sadness, and by the end there really is no benefit to anxiety, they just make her calm down and install a chair for her to sit on instead of interfering which is unlike the ending they had for sadness where she was working together with joy and both were equally important to Riley. I would have liked just one scene of anxiety actually helping riley instead of joy telling her “none of that’s going to happen” which is basically exactly where the film started anyway

  • @Ze-splattingmain
    @Ze-splattingmain 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

The movie was okay, it certainly doesn’t have the impact of the first film and there are somethings I liked and disliked about it.
I think the best part for me is where the old guard of emotions they have a lot more to them this time around especially with anger, the scene where he comforts joy and asks her kindly is while not evoking as some of the more emotional scenes in the last film did make me feel kinda nice and if anything fulled my desire to have the core emotion cast possibly expanded with more core emotions such as surprise and etc to make this feel like a full on team that mix and match and know each other inside and out countering each others weaknesses to help riley to their best advantage.
And joy saying that” when you get older you may feel less happy” tho once again didn’t hit as hard yet had some effect did have me think thats less of a maturing issue and more of a society issue I,ve ,seen adults be happy, some times more happy than kids, so take that s you will. It’s society that sucks the fun out of life.
In fact the only flaw I could think of regarding the old batch is that they kinda learned nothing from their last adventure and we see them suppressing/ outcasting memories which was the entire point the last film was making a point against suppressing bad memories and embracing them in order to over come them only to relearn that same lesson when they start the memory avalanche. And what makes this more jarring is that sadness is treated with respect which is what I expected but as soon as anxiety rocks up and shows what she’s capable of joy sorta dismisses her, even if she is a new emotion that just came out of the blue I would expect joy to come off a bit lighter on anxiety despite anxiety’s over exaggeration. And even if you make points that joy retains her lessons the film still goes the same route with anxiety who learns that the old emotions are just as important and the “new or complicated” emotions. Also the personality islands are now back to five instead of the nine they had at the und of the first film which is…off putting to say the least.
Specking of anxiety the new emotions are…fine to some extent tho they do kinda rub me the wrong way still, like for example while she definitely is the best in her squad anxiety just seems to be a form of anticipatory fear. And even in the end/climax where she causes a full on panic attack which was cool and was visually impressive but panic is just literally just sudden fear. And so with her existence I do feel a bit like the carpet was pulled under my feet because not only do I think they could do anxiety as a combination of two emotions but also I feel like they made the ending of the last film with the combinations of emotions to produce new emotions kinda redundant. We can now just introduce an emotion whenever we want dose kinda is a clash in my eyes even if I will admit I do have a bias for the old guard.
I found ennui to be…there. I personally don’t find boredom to be an emotion since it’s a lack of stimuli and huge majority of emotions need stimuli to work, and even if boredom is an emotion ennui more often represents apathy which is an absence of emotion. So Im conflicted to say the least.
Embarrassment kinda felt like a two dimensional character that only mumbles and groans which while yes make sense also kinda makes him not that interesting in my eyes and I would’ve like the idea of shame a lot more since for me shame is the core emotion behind embarrassment and if anything embarrassment is a lesser from of shame. I will say he’s still cute tho.
And envy is mostly anxiety’s side kick and almost enabler since she would encourage the rest and riley for that matter to fit into Val and co. So if anything she actually came out with the longest stick out of the three new emotions besides anxiety lol. Tho envy is a desire and desires and emotions are pretty different to me but I also don’t call the shots so what can I do.
Nostalgia I will say was a pretty missed opportunity and kinda felt more redundant than any of the new emotions combined only coming in to be a gag that came off as eye rolling. And I also think she could’ve helped even with her old frail body and getting lost in the past, along with joy she could’ve been a key part to fixing Riley’s sense of self making Riley remember that she was completely fine the way she was and maybe should return to how she was. Tho once again nostalgia is also a desire much like envy.
Lance, bloofy and the deep dark secret were fine tho I don’t have too many thoughts or feelings of them.
Bloofy just seems like diet bing bong (no offence) he even has a bottomless bag OH MY GOD how on the nose do you need to be.
Lance looks cool and the game details are a nice touch tho I will say I do have a question, if Riley has a crush on him and a crush which is a romantic interest or the evidence of love then where is love, if we are going out of our way to add things like anxiety then why isn’t their a love emotion. Maybe it will appear in a sequel but as I stated I much preferred the mixing a matching of emotions so this would rub be the wrong way even more but nothing talks louder than money.
And then we have the deep dark secret…he’s fine, he’s funny I will give him that and the dark secret makes some sense with how secretive he is tho I’m personally not vibing with the design, I would of preferred something that dwells in the dark or unclear to see, maybe a bit more monstrous so our imaginations run wild to what Riley is hiding something thats so forbidden that she has her mind lock it in a highly secure and heavily monitored jail complex essentially.
Also I think this film was pretty predictable, maybe if you didn’t watch the first film this would help but if you watched the first film you could pretty much just say “let me guess something goes wrong while the others are outside, they come back fix the problem have a touching scene and they have a even greater out come because the work together which results in a better out come” you could pretty much see this thing coming from miles away but the little hints of charm helped even if the main message was once again balance.
Overall Im not a lover of this film nor do I hate it but can’t help I would’ve been so much happier with the first instalment, because now I feel polarised. Im definitely not a fan of the new emotions but I don’t despise them. The older emotions are arguably improved but they lost some of the lessons they should’ve learnt in the last outing. And the plot follows an obviously similar plot to the first but introduces new ideas that at least change something.
I can definitely see why a lot of people like it but I may be the outlier here and say I would give it a 6/10, it has cool ideas and it’s visual eye candy which is guaranteed since it’s from Disney and Pixar but from someone who saw the first film it tracks a bit too close to it’s predecessor and doesn’t have a lot to surprise you if thats the case…which is funny because surprise isn’t a emotion based character in the base roster of emotions…lol.

I see where you're going with this. Like you honestly have pretty good points I never thought about but I wanted to like add something a bit if you don't mind
1st) about the thing where they relearn the lesson from the first movie. I see it as a thing of in the first movie, they learnt that each emotion is as important as the other and how you shouldn't suppress the negative emotions and stuff, while the second movie is abt how every memory is important and how you can't just keep the good ones and leave behind the bad just cause you think it'll be better for her (Riley) and how you shouldn't suppress those bad memories to try and control the kind of person Riley would be, but that she should decide for herself and stuff but I get what you mean since it sorta ends up following the same thing where anxiety basically suppresses the older emotions and takes over
2nd) about anxiety kinda being an extension of fear (or basically anticipatory fear). Like isn't it that those 2 are pretty different like how anxiety mention in the movie "fear is dealing with the threat she sees, anxiety deals with the future" or something along those lines. In a way, anxiety more so intesifies the fear of things that haven't even happened at all that lead to, in the case of the movie, a panic attack. But I could be wrong
3rd) is nostalgia. Honestly I see her appearances as something that make sense to me. Like I saw it as like the random feeling of nostalgia you get when you maybe try a type of food from a really long time ago or hear a song from a really long time ago then you get those flashbacks/feelings and whatnot but it doesn't last long, hence the other emotions quickly kicking her out when she shows up
But overall, I loved your commentary and how I was able to see the movie from your point of view😊

I think it was because embarassment can relate a lot to sadness Like when Riley was going to steal that book and read through it, envy, anxiety, and enwui would not feel bad about it at all but embarassment would because it is embarassing to go through a book and it would make you more likely to avoid it. Thats why often embarassment can lead to sadness and it makes sense that those two worked together. Embarassment feeling awkward shy about doing things would definietly be the first one to realize that what anxietys doing is wrong imo. For me, when Im feeling anxious, if its not joy or sadness pulling me out of it then its embarassment reminding me that doing any of the things my anxiety wants me to do would be humilating and then id go hide. Sorry if its hard to explain

I don't know how well they'd really do that but there's more they can do without straight up milking the series until people are sick of it. I hope future Pixar movies are still creative and even a little personal, cause stuff like Lightyear don't give me confidence they can just make standard fun movies that don't have a strong emotional core to them.

Inside Out 2 feels so much smaller. The "Sarcasm" and "Brainstorm" are great world building, but they don't work too well as roadblocks because they aren't really a result of Riley's conflicting emotions. They're just a result of Riley growing up/literally thinking! (In the first movie, the roadblocks were Riley as a person breaking apart). Good movie- that I wish didn’t try to copy the same formula of the first movie and would have expressed its strong themes in a better way. Great humor, themes, and world building, but bad plot, and too fast paced so it’s emotional beats felt...rushed?

Wish they didnt add the 4 new emotions and just transfered the anxiety role to fear but name drop they are suffering from anxiety. I think the main og 5 were enough and is implied in the original movie they distributed all those other emotions between them and working together. Also some emotions were presented as interactions and situations in the first movie to me is clear riley is beginning to feel depressed in the first movie and we can see that but instead of putting a depression character to start misbehaving they show the lack of joy the apathy the anger she feels and the confusion and she falls deeper and deeper into that representing by the way the controls stop working properly and things begin crumble. You can say depression is not a emotion different from anxiety but anxiety is basically fear when we feel anxiety attacks we are suffering from a anxiety disorder so i wish it was about fear getting out of control it also would put the stakes higher because we like fear in the first movie and joy also likes fear. They always had a good relantionship different from joy and sadness so turn a normal emotion into the antagonist would be pretty cool. I just cant shake the feeling they wanted new character because its a sequel so it has to have new character and the emotions are the most important characters so it has to have new emotions

    • @bethanysingsmrs849

anxiety and fear are different though. Fear is about physical present threats, anxiety is about threats that are far from happening leading you to overthink multiple different things relating to that future. Its just that people use the two so interchangeably that the original meanings forgotten. I couldn't see the character fear doing anything anxiety did in this movie, he isn't chaotic, irratic, energetic or talkative enough to take control like that. Anxiety often takes control, while fear is cautious in a realistic way.

    • @luma4902
      @luma4902 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@bethanysingsmrs849 anxiety is literally fear of the future. Fear is also used to things are not really there like fear of monsters. On the first movie they boiled down to 5 core entities to control the human emotions because there is actually a ton of emotional states even as a kid and if they tried to make all of them a emotion it would be basically a city you can see it on the deleted scenes of the first movie every emotion was a character. I think is clear in the first movie Disgust express more than just disgust that literally would be not liking brocolli when they explain she tries to make Riley dont be "poisoned socially" and her interacting with controls basically show boredom and other States like desinterest. You said fear dont behave like anxiety but the movie is about maturing they could show fear getting out of control and behaving like anxiety because he is changing Riley is feeling too much fear when she shouldn't and that becomes a anxiety disorder that is a problem because having fear itself is not a problem. In my opinion it would even be a better metafor for how anxiety works. Can't shake the feeling executives pressed for new characters because it's a sequel and they need new characters especially for merch

TF they couldn't just kill joy, it wouldn't make sense, you can't "Delete an emotion"-
I say, for example, the fact that sadness returns first through the tubes to the central amygdala might seem strange. I mean, why don't others do it too? Or why didn't they do that in the first movie? The answer is very simple: Inside Out was made/supervised by people who knew human psychology well. Riley during the second film experienced the new secondary emotions in sadness, so although it may seem senseless, the fact that sadness returns is due to the fact that the film follows the human nature of emotions, and that is why this choice can be a little ' meaningless in the eyes of some viewers.

They don't say anything, don't look for help, and asking "are you okay" when someone is upset is just about the worst thing you can do. That and the fact the moral comes down to "you have control over your emotions" because sometimes, you don't. Sometimes it's hard to control your emotions, and that's okay. Here, it's almost demonized. I know that's not what they were going for, but the fact it can be taken that way is heartbreaking.

Ok the only issue i had with precisely the Anxiety attack (And this is WAY too personal so take it with a grain of salt, its just my opinion)
But in a personal manner, when you have an Anxiety attack. You cannot just easily calmed down. What i would have loved to see is the friends stepping in, asking if Riley was ok (shes clearly not) then explain that she wasnt severely injured, it was an accident. All emotions being at HQ listen and Anxiety gains back "conciousness" with joy telling Anxiety to relax and take it easy. While in the real world they ease Riley and reassure her. Leading to perhaps Riley "beaking down" her emotions kinda what happened in the film originally but with more of a regretful voice, even feeling embarrassed from all the mistakes she has done. And they end up hugging
Again this is just personal opinion, but all i can say is that at least when i have a first anxiety attack you cannot calm down on your own, like what happened in Puss in Boots 2
Edit: I thought the deep dark secret is that one guilty pleasure you have.... Yes not me self reflecting on my embarrassing Undertale phase (no its not me being a fangirl of Sans in a you know what way)
