How Haru gets upset at Makoto since Makoto is also questioning Haru about his future. How Haru gets surprised since Makoto finally snaps at him. It's the first time that Makoto has actually yelled at him, and not in a way where he simply raised his voice. Haru looks affected after Makoto yelled at him but gets mad again when Makoto mentions the future. Haru snaps and in the moment simply says whatever at Makoto. This is the moment where he tells Makoto that Makoto always meddles in everyone else's business, and that he shouldn't do that when he hasn't figured out his future either. Makoto looks hurt, poor baby. And in the moment when Makoto finally lets go of Haru's hand, we can see how hurt and confused Haru is. We have always seen Makoto reaching out to hold Haru's hand, yet here, Makoto lets go. This simple action has so much meaning behind it. It's showing how Makoto is finally letting Haru go. How he isn't going to decide things for Haru anymore. He won't be dependent on Haru or let Haru be dependent on him. He wants to see Haru move forward, even if it means that Makoto will be left behind. Making such a decision must not have been easy for Makoto. Choosing to go to a University that is so far away must have been very difficult. He is as attached to Haru as Haru is to him. We can see him try multiple times to bring the subject up and talk about it with Haruka, but it never goes well. So in a way, I believe that he might have wanted to persuade Haru to maybe go to the same university or to simply move closer to Tokyo. He could also have wanted to see Haru move on, and not just stay alone in Iwatobi. That proves that he cares for Haruka. Heck, Makoto even asks Rin for help, where Rin takes Haru to Australia. That's like basically helping Haru and Rin be together. Which we see, doesn't happen, thankfully, sine throughout the whole trip, Haru is thinking about Makoto. Anyways, when Makoto finally tells Haru about his decision... The hurt in Haru's eyes and the pain in Makoto's eyes as Haru runs away. I believe that Haru was shocked at first to hear about Makoto's decision, but then had a small panic and anger attack. The panic due to having the one person he loves leave and the anger/panic because he didn't prepare and doesn't know if he can go or how to follow Makoto. It's all happening so fast for him. So when we top the fact that Haruka is already dealing with a tough life decision with the fact that his husband/ best friend/soulmate/support/constant is leaving far away too... he's devastated and even more lost now. Later in the episode we see Haru curled up in bed, sad and in pain after learning of Makoto's plan..... Also, what if Haru was unsure of making a dream because he didn’t want to leave Iwatobi. He knows that he loves to swim and that he’s very good at it, but if he were to pursue a career, then he would have to leave and get scouted somewhere where Makoto might not be able to follow. He can’t imagine it..leaving the one person who has always been there for him. Then when Makoto does tell him that he’s leaving to Tokyo, Haru just looks so hurt and broken.. my babies 🥺

Well of course, what would you do if your best friend told you that they will be leaving to another city after high school and not tell you until last minute. But yea, I felt sad for Haru when he did that face.
I should say *SPOILERS* I just finished watching all of the series and the movie, and this is one of the most powerful scenes in my opinion. Harus shock and hurt is very well portrayed in the split second before the anger hits. He's so afraid of being left behind by the people he cares about and with good reason. First his father moves away for work and soon his mother follows, leaving him behind for long and longer stretches of time, to care for himself. At the end of the day, he always returns to an empty house. (Empty and waiting, like he himself is empty of a purpose and waiting for a dream to fill his life?) Then there's Rin who suddenly reveals that he leaves for Australia in elementary school, just as Haru is starting to feel close and comfortable with him and while he returns to them ih High School, Rin returns resentfull towards Haru and it takes a lot of effort and second-guessing himself, before Haru gets that easy friendship back with him. And now Makoto, the one person who has always understood Haru, despite his kind of introverted personality, and has always stood at his side, says he is leaving him. In Harus ears it sounds like he is being left behind. Again. This breaks my heart, because we all know Makoto will never let that happen, but in this moment, Haru doesn't know that. God, i could go on and on, but this is already longer than I intended ^.^° Argh, my feeeeels ♥
I think its also Haru feeling pressure (that's real or not) about what he SHOULD do for his future. He's such a talented swimmer, of course he should swim professionally. What else is he good at? To me it always seemed like Haru thought everyone had his future figured out for him, so why bother coming up with his own dreams and wishes? Makoto, the one person who always got him...didn't get this. Because Makoto didn't see those expectations for him, he truly wanted Haru to find his own dream, whatever it might be. Least that's my take.

althougth in the next episode rin took him to australia and he found a dream.,its actually because haru came to know that makoto isn't going to stay with him and that makoto has a dream, that he found a dream. The fact that rin also helped can't be denied but still if haru hadnt known makoto had a dream too, rin couldn't have done anything. And its because makoto told rin that he took him to australia. This is one of the best moments of free considering how heartbroken haru is after knowing makoto is going to leave him and how hopeless and worried makoto is of making haru make a decision.
The fact that this was their first fight. How sweet and sad at the same tim 😢 ❤️ That zoom in of Haruka’s face and the good timing of the fireworks is just pretty amazing. The fireworks is what Haru’s feelings was in that moment. I love Kyoto Animation.
I was heartbroken for Haru! I cried so bad when people kept telling him he was wasting his skill and that he had a bright future. No one knew he was scared and fearful. That he couldn't find a dream. It was like he had no allies. I know they were trying to help but still. My baby Haru.
I think they just had to do it because they know haru also wanted to find his own dreams. If they don’t pressure him, he wouldn’t decide anything and might end up regretting it later. I would do the same for my friends too even though I know it would make them feel bad and seem like I don’t understand them.

no,no you're right. Haru had a lot of growth. He went from a quiet guy to a whole full-time swimmer in uni. I kind of didn't like Makoto's arc in Dive to the Future. I liked his caring side leading him to a phys ed like career for kids. Since he was kind of like that it made sense. But then he just became a rehabilitator for the other main swimmers and he took a backseat and joined Nao since they have a lot in common. He was also Kisumi'd the whole 2nd part of the film. He was there but really did nothing. I understand Rin had a past with Haru but so did Makoto. Kinda sucked.

Haru is also upset and frustrated because he can't see his future, and it's a comforting feeling to have someone beside you that also can't see it either. When the fireworks have blown, I kinda realzed something. Haru probably thought that Makoto will now go his path and he is going to go his when he’ll choose it. They grew up and when you grow up, it means you have to choose what way you’ll go and Makoto did that. He has let go, like the fireworks have left the ground and have spread on the sky. I think that metaphor was beautiful and sad at the same time and I’m happy that they didn’t end their friendship. And I’m happy that we’ll finally get a new movie :DDD
When I watched the first 2 seasons of the anime, I thought Haru was relatable because he didn't want to swim professionally, he just wanted to swim for fun. However when his friends persuaded him to become a professional swimmer, It felt real. The fear of the future felt relatable. Maybe that wasn't the point of the anime, but I still found Haru's struggle relatable
It's been years since this episode aired when I watched it. Listening to it now years later hits so different after finishing high school and going to college. You're lucky to have the opportunity and capability to achieve a dream. Even finding a dream is hard. I have a deeper appreciation for this series and Kyoto animation
This scene is sensational and Haru represents me a lot, because in my life everyone said what I should do, what I should be and that it was a waste of talent not to try. But Haru liked what he did because it did him good and made him feel free, without having to hold on to an obligation. I think the message of the anime is this: we should go our own ways and make choices for ourselves.
Haru really be sad over the fact that he and Makoto are going to have separate dreams meaning separate futures ahead meaning living separate lives. Makoto tho really hurt tries to setup Haru with Rin in Australia, hoping for Haru to find a goal there even if it meant for him to be separated with his beloved Haru. But in the end, Haru chose to be in Tokyo also. Though, in a different uni from Makoto but still always together. If MakoHaru aint canon to you then I dont know what is.
AHHH when I saw this shot it was a really indescribable feeling! althougth in the next episode rin took him to australia and he found a dream.,its actually because haru came to know that makoto isn't going to stay with him and that makoto has a dream, that he found a dream. The fact that rin also helped can't be denied but still if haru hadnt known makoto had a dream too, rin couldn't have done anything. And its because makoto told rin that he took him to australia. This is one of the best moments of free considering how heartbroken haru is after knowing makoto is going to leave him and how hopeless and worried makoto is of making haru make a decision.

I think they just had to do it because they know haru also wanted to find his own dreams. If they don’t pressure him, he wouldn’t decide anything and might end up regretting it later. I would do the same for my friends too even though I know it would make them feel bad and seem like I don’t understand them.

idk why i have this longing feeling after watching the final stroke since there's not much of bold interaction between them but its understandable since they want to focus on haru's growth more but yknow we been seeing haru's growing with makoto beside him like literally all the time but seeing it wasnt makoto beside him as always kinda made me feel longing like idk how to explain but yeah its frustrating too looking back the amount of drama we got from them and now haru's own drama alone in just ahhh im crying watching the final stroke im gonna miss free! so much nothing can replace them for me........
no,no you're right. Haru had a lot of growth. He went from a quiet guy to a whole full-time swimmer in uni. I kind of didn't like Makoto's arc in Dive to the Future. I liked his caring side leading him to a phys ed like career for kids. Since he was kind of like that it made sense. But then he just became a rehabilitator for the other main swimmers and he took a backseat and joined Nao since they have a lot in common. He was also Kisumi'd the whole 2nd part of the film. He was there but really did nothing. I understand Rin had a past with Haru but so did Makoto. Kinda sucked.
So true. Makoto’s character got pushed back so the others could shine. It’s a good movie, but too bad they never really push Makoto a bit more in this one.

When the fireworks have blown, I kinda realzed something. Haru probably thought that Makoto will now go his path and he is going to go his when he’ll choose it. They grew up and when you grow up, it means you have to choose what way you’ll go and Makoto did that. He has let go, like the fireworks have left the ground and have spread on the sky. I think that metaphor was beautiful and sad at the same time and I’m happy that they didn’t end their friendship. And I’m happy that we’ll finally get a new movie :DDD
When I watched the first 2 seasons of the anime, I thought Haru was relatable because he didn't want to swim professionally, he just wanted to swim for fun. However when his friends persuaded him to become a professional swimmer, It felt real. The fear of the future felt relatable. Maybe that wasn't the point of the anime, but I still found Haru's struggle relatable

You're lucky to have the opportunity and capability to achieve a dream. Even finding a dream is hard. I have a deeper appreciation for this series and Kyoto animation

This scene is sensational and Haru represents me a lot, because in my life everyone said what I should do, what I should be and that it was a waste of talent not to try. But Haru liked what he did because it did him good and made him feel free, without having to hold on to an obligation. I think the message of the anime is this: we should go our own ways and make choices for ourselves.
Haru really be sad over the fact that he and Makoto are going to have separate dreams meaning separate futures ahead meaning living separate lives.
Makoto tho really hurt tries to setup Haru with Rin in Australia, hoping for Haru to find a goal there even if it meant for him to be separated with his beloved Haru.
But in the end, Haru chose to be in Tokyo also. Though, in a different uni from Makoto but still always together.

now i wonder if there is a deeper meaning in this show. i always thought it's just a light-heart anime with lots of fanservice for us women of culture, but after this scene i doubt it. there is so much more in this scene than just "find your dream and follow it". you see, it's kinda personal, but right now i'm in a relationship which is definitely romantic but we still aren't dating, as we say, to make each other feel free to leave any time. and i am, in fact, a loner, i always was a loner by my nature, i never needed many people in my life, one or two was enough to not feel miserable or responsible. and this person i have a romantic ineractions with is in fact a lovely man, so lovely that it's one chance on a million that we met and became something more than just strangers. and he makes me feel different. he makes me think about the future, my future, our possible future together as a couple, and it's scares me. i never thought i'm stupid (well, sometimes, like anyone), but now i feel like i am, because even when i know that things can't stay the way they are forever, i realised that i have NEVER considered that i have to change myself to meet this future. so many things i got used to will be lost so soon, and it devastates me. love, relationships, social activity, responsibilities, adulthood. one day i have to give up on my freedom to get these things instead, which i need to live a normal life. and it scared me so much that i actually wanted to cut any contant with this person, saying exactly what Haru said to Makoto: "i want things to stay the way they are". and at the same time i understood how pointless this is. things will change anyway, and all i did was just pulling away a person i love in illusion that it'll give me a little more time to be myself. but the truth is that i actually want to live this normal life, i'm just afraid so much of losing myself because of it, of losing my freedom. so yeah, this scene kinda gave me "w o w" vibes. it perfectly syncs with my real life situation right now. ig now youtube recommendations are regulated by my angel keeper?
