Same gear method was good for old days cars. But now gearbox have advanced and most of the time it can ignored. But on extreme downhill combination of engine breaking and brakes should be used. Excessive use of engine breaking can fry up your clutch plate as well.
@@vinayakpatil355 exactly, engine, transmission and clutch are more important and their repair labor is also very high. moreover the disc pads are dirt cheap (compared to engine, gearbox and clutch) hardly front disc pads replacement will cost you around 2-3k (max 4-5k for bigger vehicles). I don't use too much of engine breaking on downhill because its eroding your clutch plate I like to use little brakes instead of heavy engine breaking.
Well explained. I drive mostly in mountains. One thing which experienced drivers should also follow from this video is --- GIVE WAY TO UPHILL VEHICLES. Many people fail to do it.
No additional Inputs brother. 80% important points covered in this video. Rest 20% points of practical learning will be a continuous process throughout one's life. I am right now in Almora, Uttrakhand. Will be heading towards Delhi/NCR in a couple of days. Thanks 4 reminding me my own experience & learning once again. Keep it up Ashu.
If you're driving an automatic, it's wise to avoid D mode on hills especially while coming down. Manual mode will lock torque converter and will give marginal engine braking support, not close to stick shift though.
Really helpful and to the point. Switching off AC has two fold effect- more engine power as well as you need to keep windows open. This gives good situational awareness as you can easily hear the horn from incoming traffic which is really important at blind turns. Also I generally turn down volume of music if not mute it at all.
Ashish, you have covered this topic well. I would like add two more points. 1, carry your personal recovery kit( Snach strap, Bow Shackles etc) so that some can help you if get stuck in the mud. 2, Once you are of the Bituminous Roads( Tar road) and you are Dirt road it is better to reduce the tyre pressure so that the contact surface of the wheel increase and traction improves.
Good on AB. One more point can be. U can plan your overtaking through google map.. Whenever u need to overtake look for straight road on map and clear traffic through eyes. And second point- give respect and preference to front coming trench side vehicle and if u have space don't be stubborn to back off. This will also save u from road rage and traffic jams.
While the traffic is stalled, people nowadays have a tendency to jump on to the lane for opposite traffic instead of waiting in their own lane, which creates the chaos. Nice and informative video 👍

Thanks for this very helpful video. Dou you use a 4x4 Scorpio? Any tips for driving front wheel drive vehicles on hills? All the "compact SUVs" are front wheel driven these days.
Hi Ashish. Good video as always. Just one suggestion. On the hill, when you are on the curve, you should always use high beam and as soon as you see the on coming vehicle you should use dipper and low beam.
Thanks brother, aapke suggestion acha mila ki rukne ke baad upar chade waqt hand brack ka use karna chahiye na ki clutch with accelerators ka, me wo galti karta tha.

Engine braking in case of automatic transmission is rarely used. Its a much more complex feature considering the internal clutch mechanism. But it still can be done by putting lever in "L" (low). Just make sure not to shift it from N to L while in motion. Do it before you start moving...
Very beautiful explained I have Mux ie Isuzu Automatic and Iam little skeptical to take this or my Brezza AMT to Baroot valley bro can u give me little advice dear ❤️🙏🙏
Engine brake zyada use Karne se engine kharab Hota Hy and brakes kharab hojaye to asani se change karsakte ho and less cost than repairing engine. So use breaks wisely.
i guess all the points are really obvious but yet important thanks a lot the only thing bugging me is how do drive smoothly like a pro without any jerk even on steep hills..
Yes I feel it at altitude close to 2500-3000 mtrs. I guess it's maybe because of low atmospheric pressure, engine power is de-rated and it struggles for air ingress..
Can't compare... Scorpio is a SUV offroader with a price range of 15-20 lacs...Innova is a MUV in price range of around 30 lacs... totally different genres....i think it will be better if you decide what exactly is your requirement first...

Thank you for making such a great video. I had a recent encounter and would like to ask you for your opinion about what should have been done to tackel the situation in a better manner. During our recent trip to himachal i ended up on a wrong road(due to google maps i ended up on a road that was not pakka and had a lot of loose stones. This is not the conventional route. Additionally it had rained a bit before to make things worse). While going downhill on the road the car started to slide and before i knew it the car had gone out of my control. I tried breaking slowly and steering into the direction of the skid but that did not help. At the end the car came to a halt after bumping into a tree. Do you think i should have applied handbrake? What else could have been done to avoid this accident? P. S i was driving a 5 month old mahindra xuv700 and was not going more than 10-15 km/hr. Thanks for taking out the time to go through my query.
1. Immediately come into first gear 2. Don't apply hard braking, point is wheels should keep rolling so that you get some traction 3. If very needed, apply hand brake Point is you are in first gear so engine won't allow more than 20, and if you don't apply brakes and wheels are getting some traction for you to steer. But if you already were at speed and skidding hand brake would stop two wheels and two wheels rolling for traction. And chant His name Uperwala
