    Wow!
That is a beautiful insulated hive. I've always wanted to make one of these, so far we have insulated just the top portion but you can't beat insulating the entire hive. Beautiful craftsmanship and I know the residents will love their home! :)

Thanks so much! These were pretty easy to build. In the next video (dropping on Friday) we include a cost breakdown.

Thanks so much! We put up 3 swarm boxes this week and have 4 more that we've baited and are ready to put up. We're in central North Carolina and it's still a bit early here, but we've started. Videos coming after we finish up the Insulated Hive Build project.

Thank you once again, another great, instructive video! I was following along with Dr. Leo's instructions and making notes. Appreciated where you annotated and/or further discussed steps in the process and your thoughts. Why did you switch from the staple gun to a brad nailer when attaching the vertical side pieces like part C to part A? What size nail did you use and did you return at some point to using staples?

    • @randsbees

Thank you for the kind words! That 11/32" thick plywood didn't leave much room for errors in stapling those parts together with our 3/8" narrow crown stapler. We had staples blow out the side as we were attaching those vertical pieces. Roy had a brad nailer, so he used 1" brad nails and didn't have nearly as much problem blowing out the sides. He only used the brad nailer where he was shooting from one piece of plywood into another piece of plywood. He used the stapler everywhere else. I just started editing Part 3 of the build, and it should be out next Friday if all goes well.

@@randsbees Thank you! Sometimes I have trouble following Dr. Leo's instructions (not a criticism of him at all as it is so generous and helpful that he would provide for free, most likely due to my lack of skills:-). For example on the materials list he provides for 1" narrow crown staples or nails and also lists T50 staples, 3/8" leg? (20) and I can't see, or am missing where the application of those materials are. But you all are really helping me understand better. I'm tentatively planning on building 3 hives later this year. Bee blessed!:-)

Roy just told me that the T50 staples 3/8" long are used to attach the screen wire on the inside of the lids over the ventilation holes that are drilled on each end. You'll see him doing that on the next video.

@@randsbees Great, thanks, looking forward to it and finding out the total time it took to build each hive.

How do you put your lid latches on?

    • @randsbees

We just screwed on 1 1/2" hooks that we got at Lowes. Easy peasy.
