I had the B@M version on a 1980 Camaro. The little blower was great on the no compression smog engine. With torque everywhere, the drive ability was great. E85 would have ben great back then.
I still swear by my polished B&M 174 (or 177, I can’t keep up…just know it was the largest single-carb ‘street’ blower at the time) with Teflon rotors…torque for days on SBC or BBC🤘🏼 It has destroyed a few engines through the years 🤣 Just sitting downstairs in the toolbox, patiently waiting…
Richard, I ‘believe’ I have what is an original polished B&M 177 if you want a pic. I just know it was the biggest offering in a ‘street’/single-carb blower at the time 🤷🏻♂️
To answer your question regarding “do guys still do these”…. Yes, I’m wrapping up my 347/174 install to my ‘64 Ranchero! Inconel exh valved AFR 185s, 9.1:1, custom cam, converted 950 for E85. Scored the blower last year new in the box from a guy across the country, pennies on the dollar. Holley/Weiand no longer supporting the blower which may prove a challenge later. Have watched your vids on the 174 multiple times, thanks for all the tips!
Ir rips in my 2800lb trucklet! Besides my radically shortened tire wear, the biggest challenge to date has been keeping the belt from slipping/flying off, not the greatest tensioner design. I've got my pulley alignment near perfect, need to fab up a different tensioner.... Hotrodding, what can you say?!
@@markevans7307 I have the Weiand model for my Trucklet. It has a large spring that wraps around the snout to make the Tensioner work. It's very effective. But the Waterneck on the manifold is of a very bad design. I'm always fighting leaks. Meanwhile, we are learning Perseverance and Patience.
Last night at Bandimere I saw a Pontiac trophy 4 cylinder in a front engine dragster with a roots blower. Wish I could have seen it run but I was focused on my own car so I missed it.
I have one a 331 Windsor and making 680hp on pump fuel and now its going on E85 to cool down the intake charge air and more boost. dart block 8.5comp dart snr alloy heads forged crank, H beam steel rods, SRP forged pistons .. On 2.9lb of boost it make 490hp at 6000rpm. I have now holley terminator X stealth efi kit going on it 1500hp kit .. cant wait to see where we get .. 950dp E85 carb would be nice too .
I'm very familiar with LS turbo motors but my new build is a mild 355 SBC with blower shop 192 supercharger. What do you consider safe boost pressure and timing (9.5:1 CR) on 91 octane with cast bottom end? This ones a cruiser not a race car. I may add water/meth injection if needed
I’ve liked the thought of having a small roots blower to bump up the power in my truck for many years. The price of fuel and the poor fuel mileage of a big block, I don’t think it’ll happen.
I personally searched for a baby blower and im throwing a nitrous plate on it. The smaller blower makes life so much easier on the install than nearly any other power mod (nitrous excluded of course) for the most part it fits easily and is effective for what it is As long as youre not expecting too much i think theyre great lol. I think they still have a place, but unfortunately the 144 series was discontinued
I’ve got an original polished Teflon-lined rotor B&M 177 that makes really good power, I’d say 150hp easily! But the 144s are fun too and 80-100hp ain’t too shabby👌🏼
I would love to see the air hat on a positive displacement blower test. I think everyone is thinking that since a positive displacement pump moves x amount of air per rotation no matter what that people think the blower will too. I always thought the difference in power came from more timing and less parasitic loss. I'd really love to see how much more air per rotation the blower moves on a better breathing engine.
I don’t think the carb’d roots blower has been relegated to the past. I’m actually watching this video in part to research combos. I’ve got a little 306 that’s been sitting in a garage forever, and it’s just not gonna be stout enough in its current version. I’m thinking either a roots blower or a Paxton with the carb enclosure running E85. High tech and modern is cool, but old school performance and style is cool, too
Hey Rich!! have you ran different heat range plugs for boosted applications? if so what is the "golden rule"? 2 steps colder and a smaller gap? ❤ you... 😊
Nitrous with this combo would be ok but not as interesting as if It would have a purpose built small block ford with the weiand 174 with E-85 or Alcohol and hell even a cog belt which is not too hard to put together. Now That Would Be Something On The Dyno!
You can bolt that blower on with very few mods. It’s not the most of anything maybe ease of installation/besides nitrous. You could use your existing carb, if you already have nice headers and exhaust you keep it and it’s going to sound even better. No cutting or welding. It’s easy mode like n2o but it doesn’t run out. So I dunno, it’s cool and easy, it does add power it’s just not the most impressive.
174/177 Teflon rotor street blower will add an instant 150hp to an otherwise bone stock GM Goodrich crate motor for a FACT👌🏼 My ole 85 C10 put 5 car lengths on my buddy’s LT1 Camaro with 3.73s right outta the gate 🤣 Now the smaller non-Teflon 142/144 will only net you 80-100hp, depending…but the last one of those I bought good/used was only $750 too, so 🤷🏻♂️
I think the Aussies are really into them for their burnout cars. I wish I could find a Weiand 144 or an Edelbrock e-street blower for my SBC K5 Blazer (those are the only two that are smog legal).
Yep, I run a BDS 671 on a 351w bolted to a top loader four speed, not for everyone but I have fun with it. Would love to put a 174 on a 302 project I am working on but found out they are no more.
Richard love you work In the past I've seen you done a lot of testing experimenting on TPI injection Systems. What are your thoughts on mounting a small 1.6L twin screw Whipple charger on top of A TPI imrake manafold and blocking off TPI throtal body And using a standalone EFI controller. Similar to when you put the carburetor on top of the TPI. This would be on A355 small block Chevy With good heads And camshaft at approximately 420 horse. I recently picked up a 97 Chevy Silverado Project truck And in the Box of parts in the back there was a small Whipple charger That's in good shape. Just looking for a fun driver with 6 to7 hundred HP with slow boost
Looking to put 1 on my 66 mustang 302 windsor but has 289 heads with roller rockers etc.. Good cam, extractors, electronic ignition. My question is will the extra comp from the 289 heads not work with the supercharger?
@Richard Holdener thankyou, I was unsure with the extra comp from the heads. Will be a street driven car on Sundays here in Australia. 302, c4 with 2500 stall converter, 9inch with 3.51 gears on 20 inch wheels so just a nice cruiser with some extra grunt. Hoping to see 400hp
I’ve never seen one break BUT I have seen alot of tensioner/belt slippage issues with that stupid spring tensioner out ON the neck! That’s why we made a tensioner that bolted straight onto the passenger’s side water pump bolts pointing straight out against the belt with a straight spring as well, problem solved👌🏼

Top Fuel cars use Roots blowers, not Twin Screw Blowers

35:40 intake bottlenecks. Bottlenecks slow down air even when boosted.
