Thank you, Bhante. I agree with other commenters that these discussions of the history of Buddhism are very welcome. These topics are not well covered in other videos on TH-cam, although there are several films and animations of the life of the Buddha himself. In addition, your selection of maps and artworks greatly enhance the presentation. Sadhu, sadhu, sadhu.

They really roasted Ananda after the Buddha died. The politics began pretty quickly. The closest student and cousin became the fall guy.

@moonmissy. Pardon me but it was right for the council to bring to question the conduct of Ananda according to the Vinaya whilst giving Ananda the opportunity to exonerate himself. This Ananda did correctly to dispel any hypothetical wrong doing.🙏

    1. Samsara being beginless ( infinite time prior to this present) is not an issue to Anicca, but the Buddha staying for a Kalpa is an issue with Anicca? A Kalpa is not forever, a Kalpa is not eternity, there have been infinite kalpas, beginless kalpas prior to Buddha existing. One Kalpa surely has no contradiction to Anicca.
    2. Please tell me the exact time that Matreiya will come. Is it within this Kappa? Where is that written in the cannon? Also, The Buddha said it is impossible for two Buddha to arise together in the same world system. Two sets of causes and conditions that arise to each become a Buddha simultaneously within the same world system at the same time, so even if Maitreya is to exist before the end of this world system and not in the next one, they can both exist simultaneously, the Majjhima Nikaya does not say anything about two Buddha existing at the same time. The sentence is they cannot "arise in the same world system at the same time" the two usage of the words "same" here are very intentional. No hoop jumping. Maitraya and Buddha can definitely be in the same world system together, just not arise together at the same time.
Not to mention paccekabuddhas arise as well.

I love the video, but as a theologist for 15+ years this is not accurate from a secular scholastic perspective, especially regarding the mahasamghika which you have entirely backwards (from a historical and secular scholastic perspective) it is actually the Mahasamghika who are understood to have the oldest original Vinaya, and the information you have pertaining to this, is actually coming from the Mahasamghika sources themselves which is the oldest evidence we have pertaining to the second council. The oldest living account of the second council schism, is from the Mahasamghika source itself. It is okay to not agree with Mahasamghika, but please do so from a place within your belief system, not from an in accurate historical account. It is indeed understood by modern scholars that Mahasamghika represents the oldest monastic source.
Buddhist historical sources mention that the cause for schism was a dispute over vinaya (monastic rule), mainly the desire of certain Sthaviras (elders) to add extra rules to make the vinaya more rigorous.[2] Other sources, especially Sthavira sources (I'm being fair here to add this, although again this is an older source, that came out much later) like those of the Sarvastivada school, argue that the main cause was a doctrinal issue. They blame a figure named Mahadeva with arguing for five divisive points, four of which see arhatship as a lesser kind of spiritual attainment (which still has ignorance and desire).[2] (which is what you've done in this video as well, I am just here to explain from the historical perspective, this is not accurate, as you will read below, mahadeva actually came from within the mahasamghika nikaya much later on, and was admonished by the mahasamghika nikaya. It is not historical accurate to say that Mahadeva existed during the second council, it came up much later)
Scholars have generally agreed that the matter of dispute was indeed a matter of vinaya, and have noted that the account of the Mahāsāṃghikas is bolstered by the vinaya texts themselves, as vinayas associated with the Sthaviras do contain more rules than those of the Mahāsāṃghika vinaya.[3]
Modern scholarship therefore generally agrees that the Mahāsāṃghika vinaya is the oldest.[3] According to Skilton, future historians may determine that a study of the Mahāsāṃghika school will contribute to a better understanding of the early Dhamma-Vinaya than the Theravāda school.[4]
Regarding the issue with Mahadeva's doctrine, this seems to have been a later doctrinal dispute within the Mahāsāṃghika community (which happened after the schism). The followers of Mahadeva seem to have been the precursors of the southern Mahāsāṃghika sects, like the Caitikas.[2]

The Mahāsāṃghika school diligently study the collected sūtras and teach the true meaning, because they are the source and the center. They wear yellow robes.
Between 148 and 170 CE, the Parthian monk An Shigao came to China and translated a work which describes the color of monastic robes (Skt. kāṣāya) utilized in five major Indian Buddhist sects, called Da Biqiu Sanqian Weiyi (Ch. 大比丘三千威儀).[10] Another text translated at a later date, the Śāriputraparipṛcchā, contains a very similar passage corroborating this information.[10] In both sources, the Mahāsāṃghikas are described as wearing yellow robes.[10] The relevant portion of the Śāriputraparipṛcchā reads:[11]

With all due respect Sir but how can you put your salvation on 1 man biku Ananda's claim that he underwent 3 stages of awakening from sutting to lying position?
Did yoi find bhudism in your sesrch for the Truth or did its philosophy appeal to your desires (intellectual, moral etc)?
The 1st council reminds me of council of Nicia.
Biku Ananda reminds me of what Paul did to deviated people to Christianity. Paul was the founder of this religion based on claiming to be a prophet (vision from God) and distorting the Teachers message (in his case Jesus, in Ananda's case Bhuda).
Have you read the Quran sir? It is the only Holy Book 100% preserved till date.

Its good that muslims like you study other religions like this.
I think that Ananda is reliable because Buddha picked him to be attendant, I am sure he did so because he thought he was well suited for the job.
Why would he make up lies?
