ah sorry i was really distracted by the references in this one, there are a ton of hidden things. side note* in the neath they actually had electricity at some point and space travel by 1890ish which was accomplished via going to space by train somehow. I cant remember all the details this game is crazy.
This song has some of my favourite lines Stupes has ever written: "In a ditch and out the picture, London's withering in walls which are far too steep a pitch to climb but steep just makes the tealeaf richer." Not just talking about London down in its hole, but also about the classist walls that make it impossible for those at the bottom to climb their way up to a better position (classic Stupes stuff), AND ALSO: "tealeaf" is Cockney slang for "thief", so what Bob is _also_ saying is that "steep times makes thieves richer." "Now the Masters are in charge, it's rather dark the things they've barred, but every market turns to black as soon as all the lights are off." Obviously talking about the darkness down in London, but also talking both about how, once the lights are off, the markets turn into black markets and the "dark" things the Masters have prohibited start being sold off, as well as alluding to the expression "being in the black", as opposed to "being in the red": When businesses are doing well, they can afford the back ink to record their profits. When businesses are doing poorly, on the other hand, well, guess you'll have to write down your losses in red. "If you came for documenting, tick whatever box you like, you've got Pages full of question but I left my lot behind", first of all both playing on Cassie not being very keen on sharing all too much about themselves but also alluding to them being gender fluid, hence "check whatever box you like", but also note the capital letter on the word "Pages" because we're not just talking about the pages of the census poll the pov character is running, but also their boss who's quite the inquisitive fellow. (Also, yes, Stupes is _so_ gender in the role of Cassie. Like, omg are they swoontastic. Pure magic.) I like how Byron's verse can basically be summed up "Okay, so let me get this straight: You have all fallen down here, you are quite literally neighbours with Hell, men with the faces of squid walk the streets, a race of alien bat merchants run your show, and yet your primary concern is, of all things, _finding love?_ Uhm, excuse me but ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MINDS?!" (I also like how Byron has a bee brooch on his chest. _Really_ not caring very much for being subtle, is he?) Aaand Pages' verse is, of course, just an amazing collection of portmanteaus and subtle lore references that all together sound pretty much like a forgotten verse out of Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky.
Thanks for breaking down the lyrics much further. This breakdown actually helps a lot. I'm still finding a good middle ground and trying to analyze lyrics which is not quite in my initial skill set. When i started this channel it was with the initial intention of doing reactions to only comedy skits. But then I found nerdcore, so I'm way out of my comfort zone. But everyone is being very helpful so thanks for the very detailed help. *"(I also like how Byron has a bee brooch on his chest. Really not caring very much for being subtle, is he?)"* Darn i missed that i saw the correspondence but i didn't see the be until you mentioned it.
@@Jeff2Squared M'yeah, but I forgot to note some of the more obvious plays on words, like how the "In a ditch and out the picture, London's withering in walls which are far too steep a pitch to climb but steep just makes the tea-leaf richer" line also puns "steep" in the sense of "steep slopes" with "steep" in the sense of "letting your tea-leaves steep in the water to give the tea a richer flavour"... Maybe not necessary to point out since, well, it basically is the most obvious play on words there, being more-or-less spelled out explicitly, but the fact that the line has _four_ layers is still impressive. Different reactors specialize in different things: Insane Ian does a lot of lyrical analysis (though even he admits to being left dumbfounded when it comes to analysing Stupes' lyrics). You, on the other hand, did pretty well with the lore analysis thanks to your familiarity with Fallen London. And considering that not a lot of people are very familiar with Fallen London's lore, I think you did an important contribution here. ^^

“… out of Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwocky” or out of Monty Python’s Jabberwocky… Sorry, I had to, seeing who was commenting 😉. But yes, the whole Bob’s verse is a lyrical fanfare, and I’m not even going to start with Cassie’s lines. Pure bliss to listen to!
lol, While I'm somewhat tone deaf which makes reacting to music videos a challenge I grew up working on lighting and set design. Maybe you just haven't seen anything good like "Evil Dead the Musical" or "Avenue Q", "Sweeny Todd", "Texas Chainsaw musical".

Wonderful video! I'm honestly surprised though that you didn't point out the connection between the Devils and bees between all the other lore - not only does Byron Brimstone have a bee-shaped brooch on his left breast, but there's the line, "chance your wholesome little doldrum might just serve a spot of buzz?" Devils are the creators of Prisoner's Honey, and there are some other fun little bee-related lore things too. And good on you for catching the crab claw - I've seen this music video tons of times and missed that!
Returning to the surface doesn't have anything to do with souls. If you die and revive in the Neath surface sunlight will register you as dead and kill you. But even just passively being in the Neath too long will have the weirdness seep into you enough that you can't go back without being killed by the sun.
You can't forget the sheer amount of Things that call the Unterzee a home, also. Any coal not found in the Hinterlands would also need to navigate past the Raiders of the Mourn, the various Beasts of the Zee, the Drownies AND make it through Mr Fires taxing.
Electricity's more of the Khanate's thing, in the end. London runs on gas while the remains of the Fourth have turned the humble lightbulb into vessels that can even cast a hint of the Light of Law.
Oh right, quickly thinking back a bit, the comment about every market turning black might also count, tangentially, as a reference to the Liberation of Night.
Hell is West of London, through the Hinterlands. East is where reality fails, where laws such as motion and distance carry nigh zero might and the air echoes with Salt, speaking of those rare few Travellers Returning.

Gonna mention your Latin here at the beginning. "Avis" isn't visual, but rather "Bird". You're thinking of variations off "Video", which conveniently is also a word used in English. It's something to do with cosmic birds and hearing music. Maybe like "hear the space bird"? I'm not sure. Also, not used to seeing reactors familiar with the setting. I tend to be one of the people filling people in. It's nice to see. Refreshing, even. I will say that Hell is to the West of London. The Unterzee is to the East. ;) I'm going to guess also that you haven't played Mask of the Rose. You ought to.
