the individual components are less than 2 (usd) each for the motor, etc. and if you got a 3d printer already you can make it even cheaper since they're going for 30+ (usd) on major markets (the amount of work needed for that would be wild though)
Ppl ask me why I Love Tamiya and Japanese products in general so much and this is why, the unboxing experience is always second to none and they know their customers. I mean how many other model company's are going to send you a working Model Kit of the periphery that you bought, so you can customize as you want. 😙👌
The fact you have to assemble it is Amazing. I should get one just to support this great idea. I would have used a tiny bit of lithium grease on those gears though, wonder how much nicer it would sound.
That's great. Love the fact it is a kit as well as a tool. I use Pin vices all the time when fixing toys, but they are getting harder to use as my hands are not what they once were. Thanks for the heads up!
TIP, keep the old tiny drill bits and actually use them as pins for models as they obviously fit in the holes perfectly. And with his often they break you should have endless supplies 😊
I use 1mm florist wire. I have found that drill bits are almost impossible to trim to size and are actually more likely to break (might just be the ones I use). Then they are almost impossible to dig back out the holes.
There is some on the gears, the noise is almost entirely coming from the little motor. Life expectancy wise, I just looked it up, I bought the last on in 2016 and the only reason I'm not still using it is I managed to lose it. And I use it a lot.
Great video an the having to put in together is the best you know how it's going to work an just what it can do before breaking or tearing up if you think about it thank you again for sharing this video
I got a electronic pin vice that charged off my computer. had it for three months it was weak and junk . This looks like a better option. thank you for sharing.
Its the torque you need and like you said in your video the dremel is too fast . I thought about using my knock off dremel but it is too heavy and fast it didn't come with any drill bit collars anyway. I could just see myself putting my hole in the wrong spot or through my hand with it. This drill looks light and because you put it together yourself, you kinda know how to fix it @@ScruffyCrow
Personally, I'm a _huge_ fan of using the *_God Hand_*_ Hexagon Quick Drill Bits_ ( there's 4 sets A, B, C, and D ranging sizes 0.5-3.0mm in 0.1mm increments ) with the *_MiniWare_*_ ES15 Motion Controlled Electric Screwdriver_ ( the direction and angle of you twisting your wrist dictates the direction and speed of the Screwing/Drilling Action ) - Perfect combo for modelling purposes.
I've often seen people use these to drill the pilot holes for the windows on Star Trek ship models, though some people make theirs corded, since those models can have several hundred windows on some of the later Enterprises.
im not realy a model builder but i have wished sometimes for a easy tool to do a tiny job then a dremel or a normal dril so i might consider getting this. never expected a model dril but its worth considering.
DUDE 😂 Having to build the drill is nerdy as fuk but awsome. I can only imagine how long it will last cuz you could just print new peices and customize the hell out of it.
I had a better micro drill back in the day that came with an expensive model kit with over 1000 fiber optic cables. It was lile one of those hand twist drills, but it was motorized. I lost it and have never been able to find another one.
Nice!! Great review! Just bought one off Amazon... It looks like the chuck/collets that came with it run very true. Not like that with the small pencil drill I purchased off Amazon a few months ago. What's the minimum and maximum drill size you can use in it? Also... Would you mind sharing some info on the chuck upgrade you made to your first Handy Drill? Thanks!
Let me give you a little advice. Never put your fingers in harms way when using any drill, no matter how small as you did at 7:55. All it takes is one wandering bit and it will be straight into your finger before you can blink an eye. Don't ask me how I know this...
Hey mate, just a shout-out that you might loosen up your hands doing some neck/shoulder/elbow/wrist chain mobility&nerve flossing. I had numbness in my hands a year ago, now i can practice calligraphy 🤔
I'm sure it's just fine for people using it for model building. If you're looking for something to use on home projects, buy a Makita, Dewalt or other contractor's sized drill.
The fact you have to put it together makes it all the more wounderful!
As long as it makes the price lower too.

@@Beardqt make me one ill buy it
Very much disagree!
@@Lamartine111 I like building stuff
Hilarious that this model drill is itself a model kit. Thanks for sharing this.
Yo dog I heard you like models so I put a model inside the model.
if i bought a hobby drill and found out it was also a gunpla kit, id lose friends from how much id talk about it

Might look into it, I did use the supplied grease on them.
the Tamiya drill is the cutest kit ever. I love it.
Bought mine about 10 years ago. It’s Grey col, was also surprised when opening to find in kit form.
I have both. The grey one is a router. It has different gearing compared to the drill.
@@tigerstein Good to know!.Thanks.

I agree with others - Tamiya sure as hell knows their audience! They even let you put together their tools! I love it. :D
Pro armour maker here! ⚒️
Great video... I would use this every day!!! The speed looks bang on too!
I might buy two... Keep one in the freezer!! 😉👍🏆
That's sweet! I gotta get one! It's a bonus that you get to put it together!
Saw the box and it screamed model kit/gunpla and when you cracked her open it was confirmed. Also I am the one dude who is sad there is no soldering.
Beautiful. It’s fully rebuildable and serviceable. ❤️
I love this little drill. It's been super handy for working with my 3D printed stuff.

Would a small amount of grease on the plastic gears increase the lifespan and reduce noise even further!?

That seemed like a common theme for the little USB drills. This goes relatively slow but more than enough torque for any model I've needed it for.

I'd love to see how one of these run with one of the more crazy Tamiya mini4WD motors like the insane plasma dash!
It's a model model drill, not jsut to drill models, but itself also a model, hillarious.
... Noted, quick google, you can also get it in a flesh/tan colour too :) . (correction , its a Electric Handy Router,in the tan!).
I might get one. I've been putting hex drill bits in a powered screwdriver to get by.
Some solder or at least dielectric grease on those motor terminals would be good. It's easy to lose power to dirt or corrosion there.
I love that you have to put it together! So cool!

Sounds premium, I'll take a look.
Buying two right now. One to open and use one so I don't have to change if they ever sunset this model lol
Like something "Chucky" would use as a weapon 😂😂

Now I’m on the lookout for a project where I can justify this cool little drill. Thanks!
If you work with any multipart metal or resin models it's a lifesaver.
Just tell yourself that the drill is the project.

Great to see a British youtuber not afraid to use pounds instead of dollars 👏👏👏👏👏
I didn't notice any lubrication going on the gears, or did I miss it??
Yeah, used up the rest of the supplied grease on all the gears and anywhere else that was going to move.
omg unrelated but that crunchy guitar distortion in the beginning can only be tube overdrive right?
I had a better micro drill back in the day that came with an expensive model kit with over 1000 fiber optic cables. It was lile one of those hand twist drills, but it was motorized. I lost it and have never been able to find another one.
That sounds super handy but hard to find.
that's actually sick.
Omg I want one just to put it together
8:00 "And here you can see how I drilled a hole in my finger."
I prefer the wowstick personally (its high speed low torque and usb powered). But this might be a great cheaper alternative

All model kit tools should be kits in and of themselves
Right so what colour you going to paint it ..?
I put some paint on, that will do
The "Split washers" are called C clips.
That makes sense
Isnt that supposed to have a jet dash black belled motor with it?
Damn you dude.
Now i need it too.
Wonder if the handle is thick enough to fit a 18650 battery
Imagine if all power tools were sold this way.
Alot of injuries
That would be a liability nightmare
You could use Tamiya Mini4WD parts to customise the drill. Go for torque, speed, or use a FORBIDDEN Plasma-Dash motor🤣
How did I not know that this existed ?
Welcome to Forgotten Drills, I'm Scruffy Crow...
damn lad they some huge fingors
Gotta hand it to Tamiya, they sell a cheap unassembled drill at a premium price and, at least according to the comments, ppl love it. 😂
Wow, Tamiya making power tools?

I hear you and with my general power drill for sure. However no amount of stabbing myself will stop me using my thumb callous' from guiding this one.
Milwaukee M12 Drill is the one. Under $100
Did they offer that drill with a nitro engine?
I would probably put little plastic grease lube on the gears
They did get plenty of the supplied grease but I must have missed that bit in the video.
We need an update when you find you old one to see it after 10 years
I think I will need to do a follow up anyway, so yeah, as soon as I find it.
no lithium grease?
Oh my, please grease those gears up! That'll make this one last a lifetime (hopefully).
Yeah, they all got greased with the supplied grease but must have missed that bit. The last one never had an issue other than I lost it.
Hey mate, just a shout-out that you might loosen up your hands doing some neck/shoulder/elbow/wrist chain mobility&nerve flossing. I had numbness in my hands a year ago, now i can practice calligraphy 🤔
The irony is you need a fully assembled Tamiya Handy Drill to assemble this kit.
Skip to 1:50 to get to the actual point.
Are you going to paint the drill :)
It's also a lock pic tool.
Ideal for drilling paper
the old one is in the third drawer down
I'll check now
Nope that's just full of movement trays and hirst arts molds
Does ity have reverse?
Afraid not, if it gets stuck I just push the lock and twist it out by hand, I wonder how hard it would be to add a reverse switch.
Makita kit when?
Imagen you need a drill for this kit
Cool but it needs some plastic safe grease on those gears
I used the remainder of the supplied grease but must have missed that clip.
imagine if Dewalt made kits like this!
You should put some grease on those gears. Even simple vaseline will do.
I must have missed it out but the rest of the supplied grease went in the gears and any other moving parts that would have friction.
We’re the impact button 😂
🤣
That's a lot of quidditch's for a drill kit.
The motor looks like a $2.99 job.
God washers... god where it go.
It's called tunnel carpal syndrome.
So you use toys to build toys?
Yeah
I guess it works for drilling thin soft plastic, but... yikes
I use it on white metal all the time, no problems with slate chippings either when I want to pin models to them too.
I'm sure it's just fine for people using it for model building. If you're looking for something to use on home projects, buy a Makita, Dewalt or other contractor's sized drill.
That price is BS for something you have to assemble with plastic gears. This is just begging to be 3d printed.
Wait until you see the price of a set of sprue mounted figurines that do nothing and have to be painted by yourself.
Man, stop rippin off your fingernails
This is awful.
