I'm from the USA and my dad saved a German family from starvation during WW2 . I love your review and want this knife as a reminder of my father during the war. Your review is awesome and I thank you.
Actor Lew Ares in the 1930s movie "All Quiet on the Western Front" uses such a knife to dispatch a French soldier who unfortunately takes shelter in the same shellhole in no man's land with German soldier Paul Bauer. He regrets the deed. Though issued primarily for dealing death these knives were also useful as tools like prybars, entrenching picks, land mine probes, and cutting materials, ropes, wire, wood kindling, cloth scraps, bandages, etc. Thanks for the descriptive deployment demonstration at 4:50, though harshly unpleasant also thought provoking on the horrors of waging war and a feature for collectors to be knowledgeable of about the purpose and history of these artifacts. Soldiers to this day would still be using these knives, most certainly they were at least during WW2. Well done.
Honestly what draws my attention to this dagger is that it is a hybrid between a dagger and knife, it has a dagger point but the rest is a knife and this is clearly usuable as a buscraft knife. Its part weapon part utility, not only made for killing.
You can use almost any knife for carving wood, preparing and eating a meal or for cutting a rope, and so on. So, you can also use THIS knife for different tasks. But I won`t recommend it as a bushcraft knife.
True, but I do believe that this knife can carve wood better than any dedicated dagger, also the back side is flat, you can baton wood with this dagger/knife better.
Gotta be honest... Probably one of the best looking knives ive ever seen. For whatever reason i really like the look of this blade. The history is EPIC as well.
@treelev it comes near to 1095.It`s a relatively soft steel - good to resharpen in the field and holding the edge better than 440c. It´s not stainless,so you have to do maintenance often, otherwise it rusts easily. I like this knife, cause its design is very comfortable for use - cutting and fighting. Also it is a very light-weighted knife.
Knives are not very good for self defence, unless you live in some war zone and can kill people with impunity. I recommend pepper spray or a taser or similar, much more effective.
@@scum1633 well then they don't really care about getting stabbed either, now do they? Or are you gonna do like a super accurate thrust straight through the heart and kill them instantly? Good luck with that. Besides, tasers are not about pain. Pepper spray sort of is, but it will cause involuntary watering of the eyes regardless of the pain, hindering eyesight.
@@scum1633 What part of the 'unless you live in some war zone and can kill people with impunity' did you not understand? Sure thing if you can just kill anyone you want, then don't bother with a knife, just carry a 9-mil and put one between the eyes, that'll take the fight out of anyone.
In comparison to other trench knives and daggers going from Pre WW1 to Post WW2 this one is pretty tame and multi purposed. Take the US 1917 and 1918 knives. Double edged, brass knuckle guards, and skull crusher point. Now that has one purpose. How about the Punch and Spike daggers of the UK during the time period? Only made to hurt people. F/S knife of WW2 - not much for other purposes. This knife has a single edge, is fairly short in the blade compared to others, is not triangular or a square spike, does not have a knuckle guard or skull crusher end cap. It could be a utility blade and fighting knife. There is no such thing as "Murder Knives", "Murder Guns", "Murder Automobiles", or "Murder Tools". It is the intent of the user not the item.

Does look quite formidable. Hello from San Diego California.

The clasp is silent release, not like a clasp which you would hear, modern knives should have these.

That blade geometry is something else isn't it? I just might have to buy one. Made in Germany!

Tough looking knife.. enjoyed your video.
It humbles you, right!? Just the thought of what the men experiated in the trenches!
Look forward to more reviews! Love the vids
A new video is on its way...maybe this weekend - a massive tough folding knife from France!
Atb,
Chris
Knives should be fast and light, long enough to reach organs. The way the blade was ground so that when you stab it stabs straight, like the sax

I think of it as a good self defense knife.

@@MacKaris significantly less effective, you mean. People on drugs don't much care about pain

@@MacKaris go for the neck or the femoral artery. Bleeding out takes the fight out of anyone

gutes messer ,im grabenkampf würde ich aber die us klingen mit schlagring forziehen
Original reproduction?
Where did you buy it? Direct from Boker?

Mit 90 Prozent der Messer wurden Butterbrot geschmiert und nicht als kampfmesser benutzt
Not as ugly as the US 1917 and 1918 trench knives, vicious knives for a terrible war.
sae1095hc anything german by definition is uglier
how come germany refuses to win a world war?
WollongongWacko 2 front fighting......
Far to expensive, especially for a knife like this. Basic steel and handle material is walnut. Total rip off!
