"I forgot this game had a story." is basically my experience playing all the new hitman games. I'll screw around, complete a mission, and then, boom, story is thrown at me and I'm like "oh yeah, that's a thing."
I was really pleasantly surprised by 3's story, personally. But yeah, most people don't pay attention to the lore.
