His body was gone. The way he played (throwing himself around both as a keeper then outfielder) combined with the fact that drank and smoked throughout his entire career.... Means we actually saw more of him that what we possibly should've.
The mental stress is what did it in the end. Captaining NZ through a golden age, through a WC hosting and touring whilst playing T20, managing other business interests and raising a young family.
The main stresses though were the captaincy debacle and how that played out (still a sore point for many)... And especially the Chris Cairns case.
Cairns was a wanker for what he did to Macca. And what he did to the game, and the integrity of NZ cricket as a whole.
