I used to have a drinking problem. I've been sober for 3 years now. The majority of ads on my FB are ads for alcohol. I did everything that I could think of pleading with them to stop showing me those ads in the beginning of my sobriety. It never stopped. So I stopped using FB. The quality of my life has gotten much better...without Facebook.
I also stopped using fb. I noticed a link to major anxiety and knew I had to stop using it. And I posted daily and had high engagement on every post, which I dont think helped matters. Now I only check it once a month, if that. When I started focusing on my reality instead of other's and how they might see me, I became so much happier!!!
Also,if i wanted to search for a burger joint,i would rather google it on my own than go to the first burger joint that pops up on my facebook page(which has never happened btw).Her argument didn't make sense to me
I'm literally a part of a small business that is seriously suffering due to this change. The only way we can get our name out there is through ads. Everyone knows about the big businesses already. But small businesses DEPEND on ads for people to know that they even exist! The advertising costs are rising drastically due to not knowing who to send ads to and it will be tough for some small businesses to survive because of it.
I've always opted out of ads. I'm a minimalist so even if they send me ads, it's a waste of their time & resources, but opting out is no longer a waste of MY time!
"We just want to service our customers better." Find another way. Data rights are human rights, and we've had enough of putting profit before people (& planet).

I got ads after my phone listened to a personal conversation with my doctor. Like test results and stuff. That felt invasive. I didn't realize any apps were allowed to listen to my phone conversations.
My boyfriend always would get freaked out when we weren't even on our phones and we would discuss something out of the ordinary and he would get on his phone and there would be an ad for it 🤣🤣🤣
And that's why we leave our phones, off, and another part of the house where it definitely cannot hear us and we have interesting conversations... And yes they've done checks on iPhones. Even when turned off speakers are still listening It's crazy.
Watch the permissions your apps ask for when you install them. Now when it asks to access contacts and data think about how they could use either. Anything that the phone can hear is data...
Those photo filters are scary. I can't even imagine someone using those filters and knowing people online and when they finally meet one of those people online in real life, how horrified the person is to see what they really like.
I’ll introduce you to the real life filter: makeup. The difference is incredible sometimes and I can’t imagine seeing one person on one day and having them look like a completely different person the other.
I loved the daily show already but the daily social distancing show is ten thousand times better. He is talking about serious issues in a fun way. I only hope that he's reaching the people that need to be reached.

Remember cable and how they kept raising your monthly fee. I do it was up to $80 per month. Now I look at my phone and all the things it does and it is costing $300 per month. We are paying for a convenience that we are becoming ensnared into. More and more I am seeing it as a trap. I am old enough to remember when television was free, paid for by advertisers, why now do the platforms get paid from both ends? Personally I object and am looking forward to when I have no phone and will write letters through the mail.

What really impressed me when digital cameras appeared was how people wanted to see how they looked in the photo right after it was taken - including young kids.

A while back, I watched three videos on a TV show I hadn't seen and I laughed and commented on two of them. Within days, I got on TH-cam one time to see half the page full of videos about that show. It seemed excessive. It took it a few days to calm down too.

the targeted ads are being used as a form of militant propaganda. Every time I look for boring camping stuff - tents, birding binoculars, coolers, I start seeing all these insane survivalist commando and gun clothing ads.

The issue with untargeted ads is that they have to pay for those ads. Targeted ads are more productive for the consumer and advertiser.

A while back, I watched three videos on a TV show I hadn't seen and I laughed and commented on two of them. Within days, I got on TH-cam one time to see half the page full of videos about that show. It seemed excessive. It took it a few days to calm down too.
