Rap being better in the UK and other places than here in the US is just another knock-on effect of the oppressive history of this country as well as American exceptionalism. Everywhere else in the world, rappers are students of the game. There's a true appreciation for the art and a real effort to excel at it and move it forward. Makes sense since most of these rappers are from the diaspora, so that drive to be great is there. Mix that with all the fusions of pure cultures (African, Caribbean etc) and a curiosity for and exposure to what lies beyond the streets, the result is a crop of well rounded rappers. It also helps that the industry out there puts its weight behind the talented ones since the audience has a more sophisticated musical palette. Meanwhile, all these US rappers have is the streets. There's no culture of excellence. Most lack curiosity and any interest to innovate. They'll just jump on whatever wave is hot and since the industry only cares about who packages well for the sake of sales they back whatever trash stands out. Doesn't matter to them cuz ppl will still play it en masse.
