True, but that would require Valve to create a larger criteria for what games they’ll allow on their platform and it’d backfire as Steam is now. Though I’d say “a game you intent to finish” would be a good start.

I'm starting to see a pattern.
Whenever I see a cool looking game on Steam i'm like "wow, cool concept devs, I'll buy it later when it feels more finished".
Then, when i've forgotten about it I see youtubers claiming the game is dead, then I go to its steam page and the reviews are mostly negative.

I copped the game for free just before it WAS taken off steam. I actually enjoyed the game quite a bit aside from the occasional bug that I personally experienced. But any serious issues were fixed with a simple restart. I wish the game had been able to continue development as this is such a good idea and I really enjoyed it. Thankfully the Hellion Rescue Project is planning to fix a lot of the issues and even update the game themselves.

at least they are honest. they have no place in dirty dev series.
They could have put it in maintenance mode and claim they are still working on it. But no, they were honest.
It will be funny (or not) if CIG have the courage of one day, say X is unfixable due to spaggetticode. But it probably will never be release officially so that the real cash shop stays up with ship for hundreds or thousand of dollars while keeping the "it's still a beta" excuse forever.

I agree. In theory early access can work, it did for Slime Rancher and it seems to have worked for Hades, but developers use early access as an excuse to release barely functioning games and leave them to stagnate. It’s annoying because it’s not the idea that was bad, just the execution.

@@Skyhunter826 When you take a look on how much time it takes for regular fully developed AAA studio to produce their flag-type game you will notice Star Citizen development doesnt really take that much time, especially considering the scope of it ;) GTA V took like 10 years or so and rockstar was already big back when they started. Other thing is regular games are not revealed till some state of development or until finished, and what is even more important you won't hear of any bugs and problems of a development process of a game that is not on early access so you may get the impression that Star Citizen is somehow worse or "full of bugs", it is but it is early access game and every game in it's state would be stuffed with issues, but you just won't hear about them from a studio that is not obligated to tell you ;) Worth mentioning is that optimization usually takes place after certain crucial game modules are finished.

You literally can't Glad you still managed to get some fun out of it, but the game is not being trashed for not being ‘fun’. The game is being trashed for being a ‘flagship status’ product which was released way too early and the developers were aware of this, since they have not fixed the issues or content they promised since the start, and since they turned to even more buyable content updates (even outside of cosmetic updates) I’m wondering if I’ll ever spend my hard earned money on a bethesda game again. I used to love the studio, but Fallout 76 is nothing more than an unfinished cash cow sadly

The issue here is that if hellion should be removed from steam, then you need to go have a look at After Reset, a tech demo that has been on steam for a very long time with a 30 quid price tag, with no obvious development going on (barring a developer decision to drop the price to 14.99 for the sale). At the very least, hellion is a game that you can play and enjoy to a certain degree.

I've paid full price for the game just when it was released. I like the fact that they use orbital physics, I liked how difficult it was to pilot and doc ships I wanted to support the development of this game. I knew there is a chance the game my fail completely. Last time I played the game was about 3 years ago. It was fun :) It sucks that they fail and I wish more game devs try to make games with real orbital physics.

That was cool to see my gameplay featuring this video. My experience with the Hellion was rather positive, especially when the devs added single player mode `cause multiplayer was literally unplayable with all the bugs it used to have. But i agree with BigfryTV`s message that the front page of the game in Steam has to be changed as it is misleading people who just surfing the Steam store and know nothing about the case. By "misleading" i mean that nearly 60% of the game features listed are still marked as "in development". That`s a shame.

I agree, it might not have been intentional and they had a serious lack of skills to tackle the issues the fact is, as you said, way to early in early access and the way they decided to react to the situation. The proper way would have been to do what the documentation recommends under "What happens if I don't complete my game?" and contact STEAM. If they don't make profit anyway, they could just pull the game and close the servers with a 6 month notice to fans or similar.
Developers never seem to read the documentation STEAM gives them and if they do they just ignore the guidelines and think they know better.
I think content creators have read it more than devs.

Fair arguments. I bought Hellion, I'm actually still playing it. I think it sucks they can't complete it. Do I feel I lost my money?
I put 43 enjoyable hours into the game. Bought it for 22 euros.
A simplistic method I use is that I rate how satisfied about a game by dividing the money by the amount of hours played if that number is above 1 then I'm not happy about my purchase.
that's 0.511 for Hellion. (Kerbal space program was really good at 0.05 probably even lower because I've spent ages playing it before it even got to steam early access) Subnautica was somewhere in between. Those games made it in part because of early access.
So in short... No... I didn't waste my money.. I'd still spend the money knowing what I know now.
It's early access. You know you're playing an incomplete game, a game that you risk will never be completed. The upside is that you're investing in the dreams of game-devs. I was part of the hellion experience. I enjoyed the game, and still do. And the few euros won't break my bank.
You win some you lose some.
They should however clearly indicate the status of the game as no longer under production on the store page. Not doing so is unethical. I understand the issues they probably have with lost revenue for a company that is small and struggling. But that's no excuse to mislead your customers. I have recommended against buying the game on steam for this reason.

Serbs being Serbs, they ended up squandering most of it on overpriced computers and an overpriced workspace equipped with things like massage chairs, gym, beds, etc., George Romero-style. The management essentially heavily mismanaged the funds the company had, which is why the company went down the drain and the project was released like this.

Not to sound like a dick, but who the hell actually thought this was going to work out? These shitty indie games pop up in early access to steal your money a thousand times a year, and yet everyone acts all shocked when the game is trash. How many times do they need to fool you before you learn? It's like buying bootleg DVDs from a street corner, just to be bewildered and appalled when it turns out you didn't actually get a copy of The Godfather 7. Do people put any research into things before they start throwing money away? Everyone complains about the abundance of early access scams, but the real issue is that you keep falling for it.
Wow, who would have guessed the wildly overambitious indie company with no accountability wouldn't deliver on their promise...

Are you a single carpenter with only one summer to spare, maybe you shouldn't build that majestic castle with 40 rooms and sprawling catacombs. Maybe build a small cottage or something like that. Or if you are a small group of game developers, maybe build a smallish single-player game in 2D. I agree. Star Citizen succeeds because they have been smart. They are not on Steam, they are their own publisher, have their own website and their own game launcher. Thanks to former CryTek employees who joined CIG, they were able to completely re-wrote their engine in 64 bit to fit their scope and ambition instead of using limited 32 bit Unreal or Unity engines. They receive massive support because they're building something for which there is a huge demand in the gaming market right now. They constantly show to their fans what they are working on. They also built 5 studios with most of their staff located in Europe where it is much more cost effective compared to having everything in the U.S. They love PC gamers and are building their game with PC hardware capabilities in mind. The game utilize as many CPU cores/threads as available, multi-GPUs, SSD bandwidth that help with the zero loading screen experience, and will soon be ported to Vulkan. They have also been smart by using the Amazon eco-system. They use both their custom 64bit variant of the Amazon Lumberyard engine and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud servers.

IMO, anyone willing to pour money into a Steam Early Access title after DayZ, is a moron, and deserves to lose the money they handed over. I used to be more forgiving, but after the 'Z hype' era (where countless zombie/survival titles popped up in early access and crowdfunding), I made a conscious decision to never buy early access again. Most early access titles end up being a failure, or a scam.
If you see something pop up in Steam, first, check to see if it has the Early Access tag, if it doesn't, check the reviews. If it does, click the ignore button, and keep it out of your sight until it pops up in the media or is advertised as being complete and out of early access, then review again.
Early access is a crock. You get what you pay for. £15-20 for an unfinished, hardly started concept? Don't expect it to get any better if you hand over the cash. It's Briffault's Law, but for games.

Good job highlighting Steam's early access regulations. Too many games are allowed to be launched in early access with the early access sales being the primary source of development funding.
The only way Hellion, as abandonware, should be allowed to stay on Steam is if it's free and labeled as a demo that won't be completed.
I think Steam and other storefronts that allow early access sales need to self regulate before actual legislation happens that screws over the very few developers who have an actual development plan and use early access to both show off the game and use player feedback to help guide development and fix issues.
I read a lot of reviews on Steam early access games where the reviewer says something like, "the game has x, y, z problems and is missing content, but it's still early access, so I'm sure it will be sorted out by launch."
There's guarantee that an early access game will be completed or that issues x y z will be fixed, but there's a player leaving a positive review.
Steam should cap early access game price to something like $5 and / or be liable for refunds if an early access game is not not completed. The 1st would benefit gullible players, the 2nd would force Steam to vet developers who want to use early access.
Realistically though, the entire games industry is early access. Bethesda and Ubisoft are notorious for selling "complete" games a year before they're actually bug fixed and feature complete. Most major publishers use "dlc" instead of "early access", but that's even more nefarious because they are charging full price for an incomplete, early access quality game, then charging more for the "dlc" that brings the game up to actual release quality.

It more or less feels like a finished game. I have Session and Skater XL, and both of those need some more work. But they're still pretty playable. If any of those games were more or less abandoned, I would be a little upset, but it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Looks like there are many similarities between developing games and setting up a startup, yes you have to start small and see whether you can have result and build from that, gradually overtime (from one game to the next). Being ambitious too early and incapability to correctly assess your resources and setting appropriate target will only kill you.

It's a shame really. I think this game had great potential. A lot of good ideas and mechanics already in the game. But, it was probably a mistake to try to make something with so much scope on Unity to begin with. Of course, one of my all time favorite games, was Subnautica, and the devs had a huge amount of work to get the game playable in Unity, but in the end they made something that I still love to this day.

That is fraud. you can't take money to make something...not make it and keep the money. If the money ran out, well, that's the risk of backing a game in early access. But if there is money being funnelled out, nah, that's fraud.

HELLION is a prime example to why good prototypes shouldnt be place on steam until you can actally make something of it with good backing.

I bought this "product" almost a year ago, but did not install it even once, because i wanted to wait for more of the listed features to be in, when starting. I will ask Steam for a refund (not that i expect to get anything, but i still want to step on their nerves).

8:30 Before saying that they took the money and ran with it, can we get... I don't know... the estimated ammount of money left? This is the one point that would make me agree with you. With what was left in their pockets, would they have made it?

They were quite upfront about it.. so many games now this is an issue. Shouldn't hate on people for the first time this happens. Again, it sounds like they are very up front.

Lowering price on the basis of a product not being finished its awful imo, would you buy a burger without the beef? Is this not a violation of consumer law?

Tbh this is a problem that started with the massing of indie companies as a whole yes I know there are a few great indie games out there but for 1 great one you get 100 shitty ones this has lead to a over saturation of the market which has lead to this sort of behavioral nonsense by devs and it also basically lead to the death of creativity to a certain extent in this field

I'm sorry but this video sucks.
You literally said at the beginning "yeh so I don't know almost anything about this game but I'm going to hate it with my assumptions"
I have played Hellion and I loved it. It was a great game, only in it's kind and it was something I was looking for. Basically Rust or ARK but in space and realistic.
Was it released too early? Hell yes. The game had huge requirements to run smoothly and was full of glitches that made it unplayable. But still it had great potential.
Does it remind You of something? *Star Citizen*
Problem is, the game was little too ambitious for developers. They just couldn't handle it and they can't afford to sit and work on the game, they need money for living as well, they are humans like us. Another thing, "impossible to fix", they made VERY bad choice for game like that, Unity engine. They were fighting issues with performance and crashes that were caused by unity itself, that took their time so they couldn't fix the bugs in game and of course bringing any new content was impossible and pointless at this point.
However they were fighting for so long with low community and few people playing. They increased performance greatly, added some basic content and fixed a lot of bugs. Game is playable, I would even say it's even in better technical condition that Star Citizen. But... the money ran out, they pushed how much they can fix and optimize with Unity to the limit so they had no choice but to abandon as they would have to scrap entire project and start from the beginning in different engine or their own.
The only real difference between this and Star Citizen for example, is that they just sold the game for base price and tried to work with it when SC sucked a lot of money from Kickstarter and now for buying ships for few hundred USD.
But of course here comes Bigfry and people like You to just spread hate and spam negative reviews without any knowledge of the situation.
Also, of course, let's accuse them of stealing money and running. Orrrrrr maybe let's do the math instead of repeating lies?
Steamdb predicts 50k to 100k copies sold so let's assume 75k
Price was 20 usd right? But in USA. A lot of countries have lower prices, there were a lot of discounts so let's assume 15 USD per sale (but Imo its still too much)
EA released in February 2017 and end of development was in October 2019 - that's 32 months I think
    75 000 * 15 = 1 125 000 USD
