    Pull down the description for more about the team and the tunnel! I ached a lot the next day: getting smacked back into the metal mesh was rough. But those few seconds where I was flying myself? Worth it.

    For anyone wondering, like I was, what the air intakes on the wingsuit are for; "The force of the opposing air inflates these membranes by pushing air through inlets in the suit, helping to keep the airfoil semirigid through flight. This means that the flyer doesn't have to maintain the shape of the wings through sheer physical force alone, but also doesn't suffer limited mobility due to a rigid wing structure."

    The most interesting part of this video for me was his comment about how in the sky when flying with someone else you can't really tell who's causing the movement relative to each other because they don't have a proper frame of reference, and how the tunnel allows them to learn to understand that better.

    • @jhcoverdrive9287

      As a skydiver who's never been in the wingsuit wind tunnel, but only the regular vertical wind tunnels, this effect still applies just the same.
      Wind tunnels give you sooo much condensed and precise experience in a short amount of time. In this sport, more skills means more potential for fun.
      It's one of the reasons I really want to go to the wingsuit wind tunnel, now that I started flying wingsuits in the sky.
      RIP Jarno (instructor in the video), you will be missed with a heavy heart. BSBD :(

    Instincts can be quite in the way when trying to master a new element. I went canoeing and the guy there explained how when the canoe rolls to the left your instinct is to put your hand on the left side to brace yourself, but that will of course only make the canoe flip over faster. Got myself a good bath that day.

    • @armadillito

    • @SaraWolffs

      I don't remember having that instinct when I went canoeing as a child. Either I forgot, or maybe cycling replaced that instinct with "lean the opposite way from what your vehicle wants to do".

    • @DreadX10
      @DreadX10 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      But with skydiving, you do put out the arm on the same side, to catch more air and therefore more lift on the side that is dipping.

    • @kaing5074
      @kaing5074 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With canoeing the learning curve is steep and only gets harder over time. As you seek to heighten your skill level the basics become more and more important to the extent that one understand why the Hungariand and Germand train from the ages of 5 and onwards. Muscle memory and basic core strength as well as other exercises picked up over the years contribute to confidence and genuine performance in the boat that most don't realise. The skill difference from a young age really determines the longevity of the athelete, although casual paddlers need not reach that level to enjoy the sport. Cheers:)

Usually with wingsuits you progress from very small to medium sized ones to really big ones. This wingsuit Tom's flying is rather on the big side for an absolute beginner.

    Well done Tom. I tried learning to skydive a few years back and had some tunnel time in a freefall tunnel, it is sooo hard with such a tiny space, I found the real thing a lot easier, but with only 45 seconds of freefall per jump it was hard to progress, but in the tunnel could do 15min comparatively cheaply. Very tiring, but great for building confidence up. It'd be awesome if you were able to have a go at actual freefall, you'd love it! :D
