The 23 year old that was taken is my boyfriend of 3 years. He is a human rights activist a masters student at the London School of Economics and the most gentle person I know. Since the beginning of our relationship the police began to stop him and detain him every single time he would fly out to see me. I remember how scared we were the first time it happened when he was on his way here. They took his school laptop and phone, asked racist, baseless and horrifying questions like “we’re not going to find any beheading videos in there are we?” demanded his icloud password, which my boyfriend was younger and terrified at the time, so he gave to them. They downloaded all the personal files. We are a young couple in a long distance relationship and were still falling in love at the time, so the majority of what was on his phone were private things that were only meant for each other. It still gives me so much anxiety and the feeling of being so violated that the police took all of our private pictures and videos and said they would analyze all of them. We knew each other’s phone passwords and would go through them sometimes to remember what we had done while away from each other so we could share, reflect and talk about them together. Because of this I knew the contents of his phone. Besides us, his school work and activism work there was never anything. But the police continued to stop and harass him every single time. We share our locations with each other on findmy so I know his travels were only to me, his family, and school related things. Still, there wasn’t a single time he wasn’t stopped and questioned, sometimes for hours at the airport. They have been keeping his school laptop for over 2 years. When they first took it they kept leading him on saying they would give it back soon and my boyfriend’s finals papers and school work were all on it. Eventually he gave up, had to take out a loan, purchase another laptop and crammed a new finals paper from scratch to make it on time. Still he graduated at the top of his class and I’m so proud of him but he would have done better and the harm and stress they caused him I’ll never forget. On November 27th 2024 at 3:00 AM they suddenly smashed in the door to his family house while everyone was asleep and stormed in with guns. They took his mom dad 13 year old sister 14 year old brother outside in the freezing cold ransacked the home and are not allowing anyone back in for at least 2 weeks.
