Eventually 'the Internet' gave me amazing footage of Chris playing on every street concerts and On The Night. I thought for years it was Chris playing on the original, On Every street album, to which I now know it was Jeff Porcaro. 1000% respect and appreciation for Chris to play the same, so we get to see the drumming live and study it. Videos like this from Chris are so amazing, thanks Chris so much!!.

Chris, I saw this tour in Wellington, New Zealand. Great memories I was 19. Just love the album On Every Street esp Planet of New Orleans. I moved to the UK in 2000 age 27. A pity you weren't treated with much respect on the tour. Not even a smile on stage from..as you say probably 3rd choice drummer. I think you were awesome for the tour and always will. Jeff and Manu didn't want the long gig.

The drumming on this album inspired me to take up drumming myself after much air drumming along to these songs… So thank you for the inspiration🙏💪🏻. My wife bought me an electronic kit last summer and this is the first song i tried to learn. I love the live version the most and i now realize how crap i am at it!
When the Calling Elvis album came out, I thought that the opening song of that recording was really different to anything I ever heard at that moment. Although I already was a musician myself, my musical knowledge was too limited to deeply analyse and properly understand the piece. I found it odd and didn't exactly love it, but I could feel it was a really good piece of rock music and therefore I enjoyed it so much. Three decades later, I absolutely love the piece, which I often listen to, and I have finally understood that Dire Straits created a true masterwork. This song has a soul and a sound absolutely unique like nothing I ever heard before. Paul Franklin's pedal steel guitar sound blended with the rest of the band so well and with him in the band, I think Dire Straits absolutely reinvented itself. Everybody knows that Mark has always been a wonderful soloist, and Alan's keyboard textures and piano arrangements are simply perfect and pivotal for the sound of the band. But Calling Elvis brought us another genius, an absolutely wonderful player that in my opinion, could play as creatively as Mark. And I really mean that. The amount of melodic ideas that Paul presents in just that song is simply overwhelming. Nothing I ever heard before or after that album resembles that piece, and for me, the song Calling Elvis is almost a new genre in itself. Chris, what can you tell us about the piece? What did you think when you heard if for the first time? Thank you so much.
Life is a very complex and strange thing. Some people get overjoyed by whatever things, might be even a simple one. Personally, I am completely overwhelmed and overjoyed to listen to this drum solo in this way. To highlight it and focus on it instead of on the song itself is a pure delight. Sure, no worries... just trying... 😄 Calling Elvis drums is thus far more significant to me anyway. Did you play in Lisbon by the way? I assisted to the concert but don't remember in which year it was. I remember though, that the concert started with Calling Elvis and the very beginning was a drum solo for a more extended length of time. It was so impacting that I returned home after the concert drumming that solo in my head... and since then never have forgotten it anymore. Precious life memory event...

I loved the 'On Every Street ' album but it never occurred to me that 'Calling Elvis' would make such a great live song. It does. Great stuff.
It went from about 5 minutes to nearly fifteen!
The live version is a showcase of guitars/pedal steel guitar/drums and precussions and is to me one of the best live performance by every band.

Paul Franklin's pedal steel guitar sound blended with the rest of the band so well and with him in the band, I think Dire Straits absolutely reinvented itself. Everybody knows that Mark has always been a wonderful soloist, and Alan's keyboard textures and piano arrangements are simply perfect and pivotal for the sound of the band. But Calling Elvis brought us another genius, an absolutely wonderful player that in my opinion, could play as creatively as Mark. And I really mean that. The amount of melodic ideas that Paul presents in just that song is simply overwhelming. Nothing I ever heard before or after that album resembles that piece, and for me, the song Calling Elvis is almost a new genre in itself.

I noticed many positive comments on Danny's work in this song, from people who unlike me, seem to understand drumming. While and don't understand its technicality, this piece of drumming on this live performance sounds simply marvelous.

Sure, no worries... just trying... 😄 Calling Elvis drums is thus far more significant to me anyway. Did you play in Lisbon by the way? I assisted to the concert but don't remember in which year it was. I remember though, that the concert started with Calling Elvis and the very beginning was a drum solo for a more extended length of time. It was so impacting that I returned home after the concert drumming that solo in my head... and since then never have forgotten it anymore. Precious life memory event...
