    You may tire of me as our December sun is setting
    'Cause I'm not who I used to be
    No longer easy on the eyes
    But these wrinkles masterfully disguise the youthful boy below
    Who turned your way and saw something he was not looking for
    Both a beginning and an end
    But now he lives inside someone he does not recognize
    When he catches his reflection on accident
    On the back of a motorbike with your arms outstretched
    Trying to take flight, leaving everything behind
    But even at our swiftest speed
    We couldn't break from the concrete
    In the city where we still reside
    And I have learned that even landlocked lovers yearn
    For the sea like navy men
    'Cause now we say goodnight from our own separate sides
    Like brothers on a hotel bed
    Like brothers on a hotel bed
    Like brothers on a hotel bed
    Like brothers on a hotel bed
    You may tire of me as our December sun is setting
    'Cause I'm not who I used to be

    Strange to think I loved this song when I was 15 and had no idea what it was about but it was comforting. I'm almost 30 now and I finally understand the lyrics. This makes me so nostalgic but it's still so beautiful.

      Where I'm sitting right now. Been married for 15 years and this song is where we're at. I love my wife, and I miss her even though we're together every day. We're not who we used to be.

      I was 21 and i was getting into a relationship that lasted 14 yrs , i understood completely at the time what it meant. Though you imagine you would never be in that position. It's a beautiful song it always was i introduced my ex-wife to it when we met , its so damn deep.

    This is too goddamned heartbreaking, too goddamned beautiful ... Ben's lyrics at their best. No one's captured the sense of slow disintegration of a once-earnest relationship quite like he has, across so many songs. Knowing how much this man has probably hurt breaks my heart, but thank god he was able to turn all of those experiences into the beautiful songs we get to take in, enjoy, appreciate ... Fucking poetry set to sound. Ugh I've had too many to drink and I'm gushing don't mind me

      Funny you would say that, this song was actually a Ben/Chris cowrite.

    • @Asaski09
      @Asaski09 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jeremy Pace yup, as was the music, too. On the studio version Chris' production absolutely comes into its own in making the musical arrangement sound as wistful as possible. Both he and Ben are fluent emotion-to-music translators.

      Just amazing.

    • @sansporpoise1980
      @sansporpoise1980 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      And it's not just the disintegration of a relationship, but the fading of feeling over time, and the process of aging, and how all these things are inextricably linked. Even the sentiment of "brother's on a hotel bed" is quite nuanced: there's still some form of relationship there, maybe even some form of affection on some level, even if the romance has died. A lot of the song holds bittersweet sentiments like this, such as "who turned your way and saw, something he was not looking for, both a beginning and an end." It's rather a great companion piece to "I Will Follow You Into the Dark," as both songs tackle similar material but from appreciably different angles.

    • @garychat3480
      @garychat3480 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@byebye1813 Yeah, I think if they had to get comfortable with any style, it should have been the grounded introspective songwriting that put them on the map in the first place. You don't hear Death Cab putting out many "Brothers on a Hotel Bed" or "Title And Registration" level songs these days.
