  • In this sermon, R.C. Sproul examines the life of the early apostolic church as they participated in doctrine, fellowship, the Lord’s Supper, and prayer together, and what this picture of church life means for us today.
This sermon was preached by R.C. Sproul at Saint Andrew’s Chapel in Sanford, FL. Hear more from his series in the book of Acts: • The Book of Acts: Serm...

I understand the past history, my past history. The Word of God, the Gospel of Jesus Christ - our Gospel, His Gospel, the life of Jesus Christ Son of Man. Glory to God

JOHN 3:16 "FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD, THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, THAT WHOSOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM SHALL NOT PERISH, BUT HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE."

Let's put John 3:16 into context with the following verses:
      *John 3:17-21*
For God did not send his Son into the world in order that he should judge the world, but in order that the world should be saved through him. The one who believes in him is not judged, but the one who does not believe has already been judged, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God. And this is the judgment: that the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone who practices evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds be exposed. But the one who practices the truth comes to the light, in order that his deeds may be revealed, that they are done in God.

The problem with some of these comments is that one can believe in God and still go to hell. After all, Satan believes in God. So many verses are taken out of context.
John 3:16 is one of the verses so often taken out of context, be very careful if you are depending on just believing will get you in heaven 😢
The Protestant Reformers recognized that biblical faith has three essential aspects: notitia, assensus, and fiducia.
Notitia. Notitia refers to the content of faith, or those things that we believe. We place our faith in something, or more appropriately, someone. In order to believe, we must know something about that someone, who is the Lord Jesus Christ.
Assensus. Assensus is our conviction that the content of our faith is true. You can know about the Christian faith and yet believe that it is not true. Genuine faith says that the content - the notitia taught by Holy Scripture - is true.
Fiducia. Fiducia refers to personal trust and reliance. Knowing and believing the content of the Christian faith is not enough, for even demons can do that (James 2:19). Faith is only effectual if, knowing about and assenting to the claims of Jesus, one personally trusts in Him alone for salvation.

This is a good example of why a quote needs some context

RC continues to delight me in the way he explains the Scriptures and his story about the equity in the houses was brilliant!

I am so glad he called out the nonsense of 'Christianity supports socialism'! I wish he was still here. How we need that message today, more than ever. Even otherwise biblically sound Christians are falling for it. It's horrifying.

When I read the bible for myself (I actually began with John), I was surprised to learn that a Christian is by definition born again. Possibly starting with Jimmy Carter, I had always been led to believe born again Christians were a distinct sect within Christianity, largely southern and especially ridiculed in the media.

. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and sighs were done through the apostles. Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. So continuing daily with one accord in the Temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And (THE LORD ADDED) to the Church daily those who were being saved...
