Vientiane (/vjɛnˈtjɑːn/, French: [vjɛ̃tjan]; Lao: ວຽງຈັນ, Thai: เวียงจันทน์, romanized: Wīang chan, pronounced [wíəŋ tɕàn]) is the capital and largest city of Laos, on the banks of the Mekong River near the border with Thailand. Vientiane became the capital in 1563 due to fears of a Burmese invasion but was later looted then razed to the ground in 1827 by the Siamese (Thai). Vientiane was the administrative capital during French rule and, due to economic growth in recent times, is now the economic center of Laos. The city had a population of 820,000 as at the 2015 Census.
Vientiane is noted as the home of the most significant national monument in Laos: That Luang, which is a known symbol of Laos and an icon of Buddhism in Laos. Other significant Buddhist temples in Laos can be found there as well, such as Haw Phra Kaew, which formerly housed the Emerald Buddha.
The city hosted the 25th Southeast Asian Games in December 2009, celebrating 50 years of the Southeast Asian Games.
Vientiane, Laos' national capital, mixes French-colonial architecture with Buddhist temples such as the golden, 16th-century Pha That Luang, which is a national symbol. Along broad boulevards and tree-lined streets are many notable shrines including Wat Si Saket, which features thousands of Buddha images, and Wat Si Muang, built atop a Hindu shrine.

    Thank you!!!!
I walk with you 2 hours, 29 minutes, and 2 seconds. I did enjoy it on my comfortable sofa, I did not experience the heat and knees soreness, lol.
I was borned in Vientiane, Laos in 07/1972 and I have not go back yet. So I did enjoyed the landscape of Laos, it have changed a lot after my family and I left from there in 1977.
    Thank you for your labors!

Very quiet capital city as compared to other countries, doesn’t hear any sirens of police or Ambulances or emergency, don’t see any homeless people, hardly see stop signs or traffic light, I hope to visit there some day. And I see you can walk far !!! Oh wow you can walk in the hot weather too I’m sure, I hope you have some water to drink, by watching this I’m trying and I’m thirsty.:)

      why ?
because of commercial landscape is not conducive , Laos is shared society as a family, Laos original culture also does not like to hunt fish for another day, we believe that happiness does not depend on wealth or development even if you are rich person, but you are not satisfied you will no happy
(Lao people are lazy to rich, but LOVE peace ) it was invaded by the Americans and the French for over a hundred years in the past .

@@justinerebamontan9132 It all depends, of course. But I would say it is very safe to walk on streets. Most people are very friendly and polite. About food, there are two big kind of foods - one for local and one for tourist. I have tried "real" Lao food and it was OK for me but don't know about your taste. If you plan to stay just few days, you can eat tourist foods. If you are going to Vientiane/Vang Vieng, there are many tourist, nothing to worry. Have a nice trip :-)
