“I wouldn’t have agreed to room with you if I knew you were going to be like *this* all the time,” and the line where she suggests the POV character consider getting a girlfriend (gee, why didn’t they think of that?) do come off as rather insensitive.
But I wouldn’t say she’s “mean”. She strikes me as more frustrated than anything else, and she seems like she’s genuinely trying to put things as gently as she can. She even says that she doesn’t want to insult them and that she understands they can’t always control how they feel.
She’s not doing a real good job of being encouraging, but it seems like she’s trying.
