I think it's worth pointing out that the 60mm EF-S lens on an APS-C sensor camera is roughly equivalent to the 100mm on a full frame sensor (60 * 1.6 = 96). So in that respect they are similar & serve a similar purpose depending on which type of sensor you have. However, the f/2.8 on the crop sensor cameras is roughly equivalent to ~f/4.5 on the full frame cameras.
0:50 - Obviously this video was made well before the release of the Canon EOS R, but this lens will work on the full-frame EOS R with one of the three adapters you can purchase to connect EF lenses to the EOS.
I really like this 60mm. I find it versatile enough for photographing insects and flowers, and as you said Chris, when I travel, I leave the 50mm at home and just carry the 60 for portrait ops too. Yes sadly no IS, but you can't have everything in such a small package!
It's an EF-S lens so it won't fit on a full-frame camera. Most macro lenses designed for full-frame will perform very well though so really you have a huge choice.
I just bought the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens to shoot Jewelry photography. I am loving it. Need help here and there. If you have any tutorials on using these lens please let me know. Thank you.
Hi Christopher, can I ask, if I want to capture full bodied insects but more so get in tight to just full screen with eyes, jaws, etc... which would be better. The 60mm f2.8 and extension tubes or the older 100mm f2.8 and extension tubes ? I say older, for I can't afford the near Canon 100L. Also how would either of these lenses (60,100) compare to say the Sigma 105mm f2.8 IS with also extension tubes ?, Lenses would be used on Canon 7DMKII.
Thank you for the response! The most people use the 70 200. But i will only use it for horse portraits (not when they are running) so im looking for a allround lens that i can use for multiple things (and i love to make close up pictures) so im not really sure which lens to buy. It does need to be one with a good auto focus. Think i will search first for a good portrait/every day lens and later for a good zoom. But i go a little crazy after all the reviews a saw.. I like the sigma art 35 1.4 art also a lot for what i have seen.
i love doing macro fotos and videos from insects like ants and so on. currently im using the EF-S35mm 2.8 with the light. is there a good and not much expensive upgrade on the market? maybe this lense you reviewd here? thank you. :-) (i need the ef-s format and stabilizing would be nice but is not a must have)
If i wanna use this for close up on sony a6000 with adapter of course and wanna go shoot . Like only the eye, eyebrow,or lips Is it good ?. Or do u have another suggestion for it? I do beauty shoot for beauty clinic. Thx
It's for makeup eyeshots in other words. I need something that will focus it all. I usually have a hard time with what I am using now, it's either my eyelashes that don't focus or my eyeshadow vice versa. Any tips would be welcomed. I am thinking of picking this one up this week!
Hi Christopher! Thanks for a great review! Iam taking photos for my food blogg. Iam thinking of buying the Canon Rebel SL2 (200D). Will the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens work with the SL2 or should i look for other options.
I went into a binoclars shop. They saw me coming. Being a stickler for good grammar, I then asked them what the singular of 'binoculars' is: they said, "Telescope".
Hi, thanks for your work, it's very useful. I was thinking about buying this lens for mushroom photography, is this in your opinion a good choice for me? 100mm macro L is another (better, I suppose) possibility: stabilized (useful if I am in the woods with poor light), really good for portrait too, tropicalised...but I'm afraid 100mm on an APS-C are a bit too long for that kind of photography...I cannot decide...what do you suggest? :)
The 100mm macro L would be perfect for you, if you're happy to pay that much money! 100mm is a bit nicer for macro work, although 60mm is nicer for general photography
Hello Chris, great review as always! I have a question, in your opinion which lens is better the tamron 60/2 or this canon 60/2.8 ? I'll be using either of them on my 70d, most macro and some portraits as well. Is there a difference by saying the tamron is 1:1 macro, then what about the canon macro magnification? Really looking forward for your opinion, thanks!
Hi Great review! I wanted to ask for your opinion I don’t have a high budget and I need a macro lens for close ups on Lego figures as I do stop motion. I currently have a canon 70d with a 18-135mm lens but when I try to get a close up shot of the Lego figures face, it’s too out of focus. Out of the 60mm and 100m macro lenses, which do you think would be best for me? As I would just like high quality focused close up shots of the figures Thank you 👍
fantastic review, I watched it, because im deciding if the 60mm focal length is the right for me, i tried a 85mm on my d3100 for portais and i felt like i was to far away from the subject, the 50 makes to much distortion, maybe the 60 is the answer
This video is very usefull, thank you! I have a Canon 600D and thinking about this 100mm lens. Would this lens also be good for horse pictures? They move a lot.. So would be this lens be good enough for that? I want a macro lens but also one for horses.
+skundiogmuska That's one of the oddest questions I've ever had because I have no idea what the qualification might be for a lens to be 'good' for horse photography! My recommendation is to find out the focal length you need and go from there
Great Review Christopher! I can't decide which one of both I should buy. Could you recommend me one for beginning with macro photography? Greetings from Germany :)
I’d love to take focus stacked images of insects in amber but some are 1mm, just how much magnification could I get if pushed to the limits with extension tubes and digital zoom ?
I have a canon rebel t3i and I would love to have a lens that can take nice shots of people only a foot away at a football game, is good for general photography (site-seeing in city), and has the capability to shoot fairly decent photos indoor. I am willing to spend more and the 100mm seems like a viable option but it doesn't appear to zoom and that scares me. Am I misunderstanding? If not, what type of lens do you suggest for my photography needs?
+monikarools So you want the game in the background to be out of focus? Well, I'd advise trying Canon's 18-135mm STM, or 15-85mm lens, to see what it is you need.
beautiful lens and beautiful video. thanks a lot. I were here because I didn't know how to change the distance of focus. I have seen it in your manipulation at 0:59
60mm yes, versatile, but this is an APSC only lens, which means this is the cheap 100mm for Rebel Cameras, which means... not that versatile. But I agree, even now for it's age and price, it's a very good lens. What's interesting in this age of STM lenses, this focuses faster and is more silent than a Canon 50mm 1,4 USM.
Thanks for replay. which macro lens the best for making pictures of aquarium corals very close up, how about EF 50MM. How can I get real picture what I see with blue light, do I need some UV filters
+aquariumlife It's very difficult indeed to shoot in aquariums. You might want a lens with a very fast aperture, for example f/1.4, and a polarizing filter will help you to get rid of reflections in the glass
Hi Thomas. I will take your professional advise and will be looking for normal 1.4 macro Canon Nikon or....it depends on the body of the camera witch I buy. Witch in your opinion is the good combination with 1.4 macro lens for my pictures and videos And last one.I Iike to walk long long distance some sunny mornings through forest park and will never take heavy camera with me. I found in the internet that mirror is not very impotent to macro photography? I like this picture and camera too thirtyfivemill.com/reviews/macro-photography-with-the-fujifilm-x100-bw-close-up-10-diopter-filter/ .Thanks, you help me a lot. Mike
+aquariumlife There is no f/1.4 Macro lens. The best option I can think of for you might be to borrow a zeiss 100mm f/2 Macro lens - I think that might be best :-)
I LOVE my 60mm macro lens - its so so sharp even wide open. The AF hunts a bit (sometimes) but overall its a GEM and way sharper than my L glass. Talking of great glass both the kit zoom and the 22mm f2 for the EOS-M are FAB as well - its just a pity that the M camera has such a poor rep becuase of its slow AF.

hello very nice video. I have a very important question I start in photography I photograph toys I have a digital SLR camera. My question is what lens is needed to frame as many subjects as possible at about 30 cm and get a blurry background quite important. That is to say, I would like to have a rather broad framework by getting a fairly large bokeh
Thank You very much! It was very helpful for me. I found 6D for a very reasonable price. I have to go for some macro F 1,4 but which one if I like to make videos very close to the glass 1- 10cm and like 2x1 or more magnification ? To be honest I like Nikon j5 and was ready to buy it after readig tomstirrphotography.com/photographing-bees-with-nikon-1-j5 but now!? Will I lose something if go to j5? Thanks again
+aquariumlife With that Nikon camera, from what I know, you won't get great image quality when you use a high ISO in a dark environment. To be honest just a normal macro lens will be useful for you - you'll find it very difficult indeed to get good close up images of corals in an aquarium, for all manner of reasons
I use this lens for photographing snakes and other small reptiles, and i have to say its more of a pain in the ass than its worth. As demonstrated in this video, F2.8 doesnt even allow you to focus the camera properly on a bit of text without part of the characters going out of focus. Way too narrow depth of field. It can do incredible work, but it will leave you largely disappointed overall. It seems even telling the camera to shoot in something like F9+ it still produces a very narrow range of things in focus
@@Chris5685 Yeah I have. unfortunately the best way to do this is bursting while slowly rotating the focus ring, and then yeah you have to composite them together. Easy with a tripod, hard with a moving venemous animal and youre moving as well haha. It can handle higher F stops easier in bright light but not in dark light. Still wondering if it's user error or the lens truly is that finicky.
I rather like the bokeh, to be honest. It’s somewhat swirly, like the old Helios manual lenses. Not as swirly, but the bokeh is creamy and the images much, much sharper.
I can't decide weather to buy the 100 or 60 my cause the 100 is 549.99 and the 60 is 441.99 but the 100 minimum focus range would is 12 in and the 60 mm is 7in and IDK what to get 😩😩
Great review.....I was thinking to buy a second macro lens for my Canon Eos 550D (I already have the Canon 100mm f2.8 L with IS, but it's pretty heavy). But the fact that it has not IS can be a dealbreaker really....I got used to the image stabilization too much I guess). I will think about a bit more (it's a cheap alternative with more area coverage...).
Those pictures of the fork from 2:50 made my heart skip a beat. Amazingly sharp!
This is my favourite channel about lenses....
yep:)
I agree.
I think it's worth pointing out that the 60mm EF-S lens on an APS-C sensor camera is roughly equivalent to the 100mm on a full frame sensor (60 * 1.6 = 96). However, the f/2.8 on the crop sensor cameras is roughly equivalent to ~f/4.5 on the full frame cameras.
They're for different applications. If you want macro, the 60mm. If you want shallow depth of field, the 85mm
0:50 - Obviously this video was made well before the release of the Canon EOS R, but this lens will work on the full-frame EOS R with one of the three adapters you can purchase to connect EF lenses to the EOS.
Take a guess what camera I was using to film myself with that 50D...

I've just bought this lens for my 600d, i'm well happy with it, thanks for the review Chris :)
The 60mm that is.
Awesome. I know this is an old review but I was in search of an affordable Macro option. This might be the ticket !
This can be used with full-frame cameras by attaching an extension-tube to camera first.
Awesome video. Can I use this lense with canon eos 6d? If not what 1:1 macro lense do you recomend for 6d? Thanks!
It's an EF-S lens so it won't fit on a full-frame camera. Most macro lenses designed for full-frame will perform very well though so really you have a huge choice.

Would you recommend this lens for photographying the night sky.. Stars
So... It will match my Canon T5i right? And, how does it cost? (expenseve of course but how much?)
Do you think this one is better than the Tamron 90mm based on sharpness?
sorry, is this lens good for portraits pics?? i really like portraits but i don't think it's really good for my canon 4000d
What would you choose.. This lens or Tamron 60mm F2 Chris?
Probably the Tamron
Hi Christopher, can i use it for my EOS M camera?
Hello
I quit new in photography and I will like to by a small macro lens for my Canon 6d
Is the 60mm option for me?
Please tell me I can use this lens with the Canon Rebel EOS T5i camera. If so, I'm getting it tomorrow!
you can, that's what I use it on
Does this macro lens let you get close in video?
would this be better than the 100mm 2.8 when putting on a canon APSC camera in terms of sharpness?

I'd prefer the Tamron lens simply for the fact it lets in twice as much light, but the Canon lens certainly has better build quality
Thank you for your opinion, I already bought the tamron and so far very happy with it! Build quality is not really a concern for me.
Cheers!
Got one this 60mm lens. . Great picture for macro works or potret. . Highly recommended. . 👍👍👍
Hello! Really enjoy your videos, very informative. Is this a lens you would still recommend today, or is there a more current equivalent?
Yes, absolutely - it's still pretty good
Hi
Great review!
I wanted to ask for your opinion
I don’t have a high budget and I need a macro lens for close ups on Lego figures as I do stop motion. I currently have a canon 70d with a 18-135mm lens but when I try to get a close up shot of the Lego figures face, it’s too out of focus.

Thank you 👍
It's completely up to you. The 60mm lens might be a little more flexible as a focal length for other uses apart from macro photography
Hiya from The Bahamas. Which do you think is sharper -- this lens or the Tamron 60mm ?
They're very, very similar
Can you tell me which Canon lens is better for use with an EOS70D and copy table to photograph 35 mm slides and negatives? I am as confused as hell!
Don't know really - I guess that any macro lens, properly set up, would do the trick
fantastic review, I watched it, because im deciding if the 60mm focal length is the right for me, i tried a 85mm on my d3100 for portais and i felt like i was to far away from the subject, the 50 makes to much distortion, maybe the 60 is the answer
Will this be a better lens for portrait photography too?
Does it compatiable full frame sensors?
-Thanks
It's an EF-S lens, so no, it's not compatible with full-frame. If you watch the video, you'll find out if it's good for portrait photography.
always a fantastic lesson
Would this lens work for a canon rebel t7i?
Hello! Thank you for your review! I was hoping to confirm, will this lens be compatible with the canon 600D? Thanks for your help!
Any Canon mount lens made since 1987 will work on your APS-C camera
Hi Chris, will Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens works on Canon 80D ? Thanks

Hi! I do have Cano Eos 60D with 60mm EFS F2.8...Im trying to shoot my pigeon eye...Whats the best extended ring should i buy?
?
Christopher Frost Photography I mean the extension ring..or what do u recommend for this kind of shot..
Great Review Christopher! I can't decide which one of both I should buy. Could you recommend me one for beginning with macro photography?

Depends whether you want 60mm or 100mm. Personally I'd go with 100mm.
thank you :) I will try the 100 mm

Shots of people in the stands!

this or the 35mm with ring light?
beautiful lens and beautiful video. thanks a lot. I were here because I didn't know how to change the distance of focus. I have seen it in your manipulation at 0:59

Easy with a tripod, hard with a moving venemous animal and youre moving as well haha. It can handle higher F stops easier in bright light but not in dark light. Still wondering if it's user error or the lens truly is that finicky.
great review
Will this fit the canon 500d?
Yes. All Canon mount lenses made since 1987 will work on your Canon APS-C digital SLR camera, except EF-M lenses
is this lens compatible with the Canon Rebel T3i?
Any Canon mount lens made since 1987 will work on your APS-C camera
Christopher Frost Photography but not the new EF-M mount lenses ;)

That's correct - I've recently updated my stock answer to that question!
I rather like the bokeh, to be honest. It’s somewhat swirly, like the old Helios manual lenses. Not as swirly, but the bokeh is creamy and the images much, much sharper.
does canon still make this lens?
I think so
I can't decide weather to buy the 100 or 60 my cause the 100 is 549.99 and the 60 is 441.99 but the 100 minimum focus range would is 12 in and the 60 mm is 7in and IDK what to get 😩😩
+Jake Moran See if you can get a good deal on the Tamron 60mm f/2, that's a really good lens
OK thanks
Does this zoom in and out?
It's a 60mm lens. So no. If it zoomed in and out then it would be something like 20-60mm or 60-150mm or something like that.
Is this compatible with 750d
All Canon mount lenses made since 1987 will work on your Canon APS-C digital SLR camera, except EF-M lenses
nice little lens but nothing compares to the canon MP-E
will it work on a canon eos rebel t3?
All Canon mount lenses made since 1987 will work on your Canon APS-C digital SLR camera, except EF-M lenses
The 60mm is not for FF?
No - APS-C only

Thanks
Great review.....I was thinking to buy a second macro lens for my Canon Eos 550D (I already have the Canon 100mm f2.8 L with IS, but it's pretty heavy). But the fact that it has not IS can be a dealbreaker really....I got used to the image stabilization too much I guess). I will think about a bit more (it's a cheap alternative with more area coverage...).
Will it work with rebel sl1
FYes. All Canon mount lenses made since 1987 will work on your Canon APS-C digital SLR camera, except EF-M lenses
