My favorite player growing up was James Brooks who played on the Chargers and Bengals from 1981-1991. The Browns signed him prior to the 1992 season. It was hard to watch him play and not being anywhere near the player he was in the past. As a kid this was my first experience witnessing how fast abilities fade. The end of careers is usually not graceful.

One of Kosar's most heroic games. Played nearly 3 quarters on a badly broken ankle (that would be a season-ending injury) and somehow rallied that offense in spite of the horrible protection problems and lack of experience across the board...not to mention some of the dumbest offensive playcalling ever by Belichick and his lackey Steve Crosby. Yes, you read that right: Belichick was not yet "Belichick" in 1992. He was of course a brilliant defensive strategist (as evidenced by his 2nd adjustments after his D got torched by Marino in the first 30 mins), but he had no feel for offense at all...none. This was the source of most of the tension he had with Kosar (culminating in 1993 with Kosar openly defying Belichick, and getting cut for it midseason). You watch this game, and the offense is just AWFUL in the first half...not just for lack of talent (the OL was a joke, and, Eric Metcalf notwithstanding, the backs, receivers, and TE's were all new to the team in 1992) but for the pathetic playcalling. Obvious telegraphs, personnel groupings that completely gave away the play by the time the team lined-up...needlessly slow developing motions and multi-back sets....the only pass plays Belichick liked were wheel routes, screens, and quickouts. The only reason the Browns got back into this game was Kosar, who took over the game and started calling plays himself in the 3rd quarter (you can see it...in the first half Bernie had to stand there and wait for every call to be signalled in from Philcox; after a couple of embarassing penalties and wasted time-outs, Kosar had had enough. If Belichick's defense doesn't give away the game with stupid penalties and a prevent defense, this would have been a signature Kosar victory. This ankle injury, BTW, was the beginning of the end for Kosar...just as he did in 1988 with his elbow injury, he came back way too early (week 12 vs. the Bears) and gutted out 5 more starts. But it wasn't enough to save this season. People often wonder why Belichick was so unpopular in Cleveland...this game is a perfect encapsulation of his deficiencies early in his coaching career. He was simply a different coach back then. He has obviously learned from his early mistakes. But this game...a brilliant effort by Kosar (and credit to Dan Marino, who pulled it out of the hat at the end, even if the "it" was gifted to him by Belichick's weak defense).

Just as in 1988, Bernie rushed to get back on the field and doing so certainly shortened his career. Bernie was tough as nails, never saw him take a play off or leave after getting hit excepting the serious injuries he sustained in 1988 and 1992. One of the great heroes of the gridiron.
This is when Frank Gifford still announced it as "Mon-Dee Night Football." I always loved that while growing up. And I remember this game. Kosar was still a good QB then. And his ability to play injured was noted.

Over the years , I moved to Las Vegas and he went back to New York. Everytime the Browns and Dolphins played, we would hook up and go to the games. This one was the best one of all. Not for him tho, probably his worse. Lol.. But, I'll never forget how LOUD those fans were. It was the loudest I've ever heard and I've been to many games. This is when football was balling!!! Even in this game he broke his ankle in the first half but he kept playing and put us in position to win. NFL football was a different game in this era. Violent.

Hated losing Bobby Humphrey as a Broncos fan. He was as close to a 1B as possible for me as favorite player behind Elway on my personal list. The Dolphins didn’t get much out of him other than 1 decent year that was way below standard rushing ( 500 yds ) but way up above average on Receiving ( 60-65 catches I think ). A disappointment of a trade for both sides , but they did get much more out of it than Denver did w/ Sammie Smith. A few years later Denver and MIA would again straight up swap recent 1st round “problem players” in Marcus Nash & John Avery. That trade was so inconsequential that it almost caused a black hole to open up over the US and end existence all together.

Super Bowls are won by teams not by quarterbacks(and luck is also a component of winning SBs even if you don't want to admit it) . Tom Brady is so overrated . He just had the good fortune to play on one of the best all around teams ever. Marino and a dozen or more qbs were better than Brady . Brady imo is just a very well tuned passing robot but without the software and/or hardware to run left or right, can't throw while running or moving, can't throw diagonally , etc. When the pocket breaks down Brady is useless . Marino was incorrectly tagged a pocket qb . even with his bad knee he could scramble, move his feet in the pocket get pass off split second before being tackled, could pass running left or right, pass one way while running the opposite way. Marino is one of the top three greatest qb , no superbowl wins, who cares.
Facts. Brady is the most overrated and overglorified athlete in professional sports history. He doesn't suck but hes no where near the greatest ever. He may have had the best career but Dan was the superior QB in every single aspect of the game. Hes the greatest even without a super bowl

The 3 quarterbacks older were Steve DeBerg, Phil Simms, and Vince Evans. Evans was born June 14, 1955, and Clay Matthews was born March 15, 1956. They should have been told that before saying it on the air.
after seeing that Home Improvement promo in the middle of the 1st quarter I can see this was taken from Boston's ABC affiliate at the time, the Patriots, a division rival of the Dolphins, had not been on MNF since 1987, and at home since 1981, a result of bad fan behavior in home MNF games; the drought on MNF would last through 1994, as the Patriots did not make the playoffs all that much in the pre-Kraft era; appearances on ABC (and since 2006, NBC), have been commonplace for the Patriots since then (the 1995 game against the Bills was the first home MNF game since 1981, and fans were well-behaved at that game)
2:21:54 that was a fumble. Marino did not throw the ball forward. That spike was a lateral and if called correctly would have ended the game. Could imagine the look on Dan's face if the clock just ran out? Wouldve been priceless.

Man,I love these old Marino era FINS gms and I've watched a TON of them cuz I grew up in CT so only a handful of gms per yr,BUT one thing that has absolutely floored me are the amount of dropped passes by DUPER & CLAYTON and I grew up thinking they deserved more appreciation then they received,but now I actually think the opposite,they were damn near 50/50 and I'm thinking the amount of yards and TD'Swould have been even more staggering then they were back then for Dan, I'm not by any means saying they sucked,but they were nowhere near elite,Hate to say this but u put Dan Marino on the BILLS in late 80's to mid 90's and he's getting his ring maybe a couple,because imo REED and LOFTON were definitely a notch above MARKS BROS and I'm sure I'll get slack for this,but go ahead and watch the old gms and the amount is staggering and it's I think in EVERY gm that I watch,either one of them or both have at least a dropped pass but I've seen MULTIPLE drops by Both in many gms AND they were body catchers but they also didn't get the advantage of magnet 🧲 technology

I was 18 years old watching this game in a bar because of the stupid blackout rule in those days.

And as many of you are aware, the Steelers missed on a chance to have Marino play against Cleveland twice a year back in 1983.
Marino was a native of the Pittsburgh area and played in college for the Pitt Panthers. The Steelers opted not to draft Marino to succeed Terry Bradshaw, despite Marino's local connections.
Instead, they chose Gabe Rivera, whose career got off to a promising start, but quickly ended when he was involved in a car accident that left him partially paralyzed in his rookie season.
Dan Marino could have played a game at Cleveland Stadium annually if he had been selected by the Steelers, the Browns' biggest rivals, in the 1983 draft. It would have made sense, given he was from the area and played for the Pitt Panthers.
But it was not to be. The Steelers chose Gabe Rivera instead, a promising young defensive player whose career was prematurely ended in a car crash later that fall that paralyzed him.
Super Bowls are won by teams not by quarterbacks(and luck is also a component of winning SBs even if you don't want to admit it) . Tom Brady is so overrated . He just had the good fortune to play on one of the best all around teams ever. Marino and a dozen or more qbs were better than Brady . Brady imo is just a very well tuned passing robot but without the software and/or hardware to run left or right, can't throw while running or moving, can't throw diagonally , etc. When the pocket breaks down Brady is useless . Marino was incorrectly tagged a pocket qb . even with his bad knee he could scramble, move his feet in the pocket get pass off split second before being tackled, could pass running left or right, pass one way while running the opposite way. Marino is one of the top three greatest qb , no superbowl wins, who cares.
Facts. Brady is the most overrated and overglorified athlete in professional sports history. He doesn't suck but hes no where near the greatest ever. He may have had the best career but Dan was the superior QB in every single aspect of the game. Hes the greatest even without a super bowl

The 3 quarterbacks older were Steve DeBerg, Phil Simms, and Vince Evans. Evans was born June 14, 1955, and Clay Matthews was born March 15, 1956. They should have been told that before saying it on the air.

2:21:54 that was a fumble. Marino did not throw the ball forward. That spike was a lateral and if called correctly would have ended the game. Could imagine the look on Dan's face if the clock just ran out? Wouldve been priceless.

Man,I love these old Marino era FINS gms and I've watched a TON of them cuz I grew up in CT so only a handful of gms per yr,BUT one thing that has absolutely floored me are the amount of dropped passes by DUPER & CLAYTON and I grew up thinking they deserved more appreciation then they received,but now I actually think the opposite,they were damn near 50/50 and I'm thinking the amount of yards and TD'Swould have been even more staggering then they were back then for Dan, I'm not by any means saying they sucked,but they were nowhere near elite,Hate to say this but u put Dan Marino on the BILLS in late 80's to mid 90's and he's getting his ring maybe a couple,because imo REED and LOFTON were definitely a notch above MARKS BROS and I'm sure I'll get slack for this,but go ahead and watch the old gms and the amount is staggering and it's I think in EVERY gm that I watch,either one of them or both have at least a dropped pass but I've seen MULTIPLE drops by Both in many gms AND they were body catchers but they also didn't get the advantage of magnet 🧲 technology
