I always tell my friends after 4 years of ownership of a 1984 200D that they can be from point A to point B in their cars faster than me, but I'm pretty damn sure that I WILL be in point B no matter what.
There is an old motoring saying that it is more fun to drive a slow car fast than it is to drive a fast car slow. This beautiful car is living proof of this.
Great W123!!! I always loved this Mercedes. I remember one of my uncles (who worked for Mercedes) had one for many years. Greetings from the Netherlands!
Looks as if you got yourself a nice ride! I recall, when I lived in Australia, there was a billboard ad campaign for the Merc 240D: "If there was a road to the Moon..."
In an ADAC (German Automobile Club) crash statistics, it was found that the W123 was the model with the fewest breakdowns. In 1982, the magazine Auto Motor und Sport (Germany) carried out a study which revealed that, in the case of the 200D model, an average mileage of 852,777 km(530.000 miles) was reached before the first serious repair. It is estimated that around 200,000 such cars still circulate, both on the streets of Germany but especially in the Middle East and Africa.
Cool interior on yours. I have 2 here in cape town a 200 manual and a 230e auto. love them both. Use them pretty much all the time. Enjoy her and hang onto her I reckon!. A great description I read somewhere about the 123 is that it is a car without ego. Seems about right.
Just done a trip to Namibia and back in my little manual 200. 1500kms there 1500 back plus some trips to surf spots. No coollant and a wee bit of oil . Am now in love:)
That was an enjoyable video Joe cheers. It's a very special relationship with a classic car, and what great mpg it gave. Looking forward to more content on this classic Mercedes.
In 2000, I had a 1984 B-reg 280TE petrol in gold! It was a real occasion when I drove it. It leaked power steering fluid if you used full lock and it was a bugger to refill but I was young and couldn’t be arsed spending money on repairs - just a personal rule to never use full lock. Losing the back end on a roundabout and it wallowing back under my control is a vivid memory - as was the driver’s seat that wasn’t quite as uniformly springy as yours. Funny, I can’t remember what happened to that car - but I definitely don’t have it lurking in the garage.
I used to drive an auto 2 litre petrol version of one of these in the mid 80's. At first I found it quite sluggish but when I changed my driving style drove it harder, raising the revs it became very lively. The main thing I found is that you could cruise all day at 90mph in total comfort and economy.
Although you can quieten down the belt, I would just replace it. Cheap and cheerful. For the ciggy lighter I would buy a USB adapter for navs and phone charging. Enjoy your W123 adventures.
I've owned three W123s: an auto '85 200, a manual '85 230E and an auto '85 280E. The 230E unfortunately only had the 4-speed gearbox, a 5th gear would've made a world of difference. The engineering on these cars was incredible and the ride quality unsurpassed, especially off-road (I remember doing 15km off-road with a flat rear tyre after it was penetrated by a sharp stone, I didn't notice it was flat). Now I'm driving a '92 W124 230E with 220k km. MB stopped building fine cars in the mid-to-late 2000s, if one includes the W211.
10:34 is your girlfriend ok with sharing you with the W123? 😆 I grew up in the 80s so I remember these very well. But I was more of a fan of the S-class. I was smitten with the W126, which was my dream car when I was growing up. My first ride in a Benz back then was in the back seat of a W116 280S, of which I am also very fond. But while I would instantly grab a W116 or W126 over a W123, watching videos like these have made me appreciate the W123 more and more.
I've got a w202 and a 190 hidden away and they are 2 cars I'll never part with the 202 is my daily old mercs are the best I can't stand new mercedes my dad has a w205 and it's not for me

02:30 😀look how slowly the background moves… that’s the joy of these old W123s in diesel form, a slower pace of life in a beautifully engineered car.

Lovely Jubbly, really pleased for you. Looks like you've found a cracking Mercedes-Benz.

A car for life, they are awesome
7:15 mark. You would have definitely known the diesel was turned had you pursued that avenue. You and anyone within a 1 block radius. ; )

You've had a result there!

I have an 89 190e in Australia and am just about to take it to Melbourne some 800km and back
Safe travels!

My Manual 2.0l petrol is actually quite lively if I rev the nuts off it. Ny no means a fast car but still good fun.

I really need to find me one, just such great cars but sadly they like to rust due to age. I want a 230 or maybe the 280 six banger
Love that W123 a good buy Joe
Thanks Rob 😁
