DIY custom solar panel mounts - 180° rotation!!

  • In this video I am installing custom solar panel brackets on top of my RV, but YOU COULD INSTALL THIS SAME SYSTEM ANYWHERE. I used a super simple method to create a completely adjustable bracket that can rotate up to 90° in both directions.
    And the best part? Each bracket cost only $60 Cad (approx $50 usd)!
    The available rotation is down to the unfixed nature of the bracket, so for security, be sure to buy some locks to stop people from stealing your panels.
    If you find this helpful, give it a big old thumbs up, and hit the sub button if you haven't already and want to follow along. 😉

    Great vid. This mount would work at home or on a pull behind mobile trailer as well. One tip for you. Write the month next to the proper slot. That way you will have the optimum orientation angle for your panels.

    I would recommend putting time lock nuts on the extra part of the bolt so that the wing nuts don't come off while you're driving down the road

    Those slotted angle pieces from Home Depot are steel and they will corrode fairly quickly. Use aluminum instead, it will hold up much longer.

      Awesome man, yeah it's a fairly straightforward configuration.
      Forgot to mention, I also used roofing screws to secure the panels and a few nut and bolts to connect the metal to the underside frame of the panel too. Good luck! Ask any questions if you need any help. 😊

    Nice. Ive used angled aluminum extrusions to make similar tiltable solar panel mounts. They work better for me in the long run even though it's a bit more expensive as they do not rust. Keep an eye on these over time. Even if they are galvanized steel they are exposed to the elements and will rust and corrode on you. If the nuts and bolts aren't stainless you could also find them seizing up which will make tilting very difficult. Good luck!

    • @timothy790110
      @timothy790110 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      i also used aluminium angles, but sercured with 3m vhb tape, 5952. i alu rivnuts straight in the solar panel frame. make sure the bolts are A4 marine grade stainless steel, acid proof. A2 will not do, there will be galvanic corrosion between the alu and the steel.

    I discovered an equally simple way which allows the panels to tilt in all 4 directions. Simply mount the panels using hinges in each corner, but using only 1 bolt through the hinge. Then they can either tilt on the hinges, or tilt in the other direction on the bolts. Removing any 2 bolts from a panel would allow it to tilt in any direction.

    • @DareListFamily
      @DareListFamily  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Love it, another great solution! Thanks, Matthew. ☺️

    • @kimw1292
      @kimw1292 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Matt, trying to figure out how to do the tilting in the 4 directions but am a little confused!! So....you mount 2 hinges on the bottom where he has the bolts for that tilt. Where are you putting hinge 3 and 4 to get the other tilt angle, at the same time? Kim

    • @kimw1292
      @kimw1292 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmmmmmmm hinges 3 & 4 would go on the other two corners, but the movement is not a swivel, it's just up and down.

    • @DareListFamily
      @DareListFamily  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah that's true. It was never intended to be the world's greatest defence mechanism, but at least slow someone right down. And it would stop the kleptomaniac-type thief who sees on top of the roof from afar but comes unprepared. Ultimately, all solar pannels are at risk, and so that's the risk in owning an RV. If someone needs them so much that they're willing to do that, they can have them.

    Awesome and fairly simple configuration. I'm gonna use it, thanks!
    How many screws you used to connect the each rail to the solar panel's frame?

    • @DareListFamily
      @DareListFamily  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Just one bolt and nut connection at either end. ☺️
      That means you've always got the ability to create the angle. If you had them running all the way along, you'd have to undo them all to get any kind of angle. And the straight piece of metal with the same size holes stays with us down in the van unless we're stopped and wanting to angle the panels towards the sun.

    I don't understand why you didn't extend the angel iron to both ends of the solar panel so that it can be raised from ether side without having to flip it over. Then all you have to do is change the pivot nut & bolt to the other side.

    Nice try, but you got some things wrong.
    - You don't have 180 degrees of rotation, you have 90 degrees of angle tilt.
    - Those are angle brackets.
    - Steel is a poor long term choice. Aluminum is lighter.
    - Fiberglass on the mounting 4x8 piece of plywood will only work on certain types of roofs, namely fiberglass roofs. Further, I'm not sure it helps much at all, and adds a bunch of weight. Why not fiberglass on aluminum rails to attach your angle brackets to?
    - You have nothing to stop those wing nuts from rattling off, which they will. Lock washers would help.
