I am Scottish, I would not think twice about a tourist wearing a kilt, I seriously just think they are going to a wedding or are practicing for the pipe band, it wouldn't register that they are tourists.
I love foreginers wearing a kilt, it shows that you are interested in our small country, I kinda feel alot of the time we aren't noticed as much on the world stage as the Irish or English, so it is really, really flattering!!!
    So, yes, wear a kilt!!!

Hello from Edinburgh, and I've been enjoying your videos. It's kind of humbling to see people on a completely different continent, help keep our culture alive. So thank you.
Anyway, just wanted to say that while the kilt isn't normal everyday dress here, it doesn't mean that you'll automatically be seen as a tourist if you wear one. What will be true is that any people who might be gawping at you WILL be tourists. The kilt isn't worn much but it doesn't attract undue attention. If you commented to someone that you saw someone in a kilt, their response would likely be, "And?" With a strange look to go with it.
I just didn't want anyone visiting to feel unduly self-conscious. And bear in mind that the further north and west that you go, the more people you'll see wearing kilts. The Borders too, come to think of it. Not multitudes, just a few more. It's just that us living in the cosmopolitan Central Belt that are too effete ;)

It can feel like a gentle humour and the 'mick' gets taken out of everyone. The best way is to laugh at the situation/yourself.....and you are then 'in' the modern culture.

I have really enjoyed watching your videos and the content is great! It's nice to see such interest in our culture from across the Atlantic. I wear a kilt regularly - a day kilt as well as for more formal occasions - and although day kilts are not common practice here (Edinburgh) they are not particularly uncommon either, and it is very common for kilts to be worn on formal occasions. I don't think anyone assumes I'm a tourist when I'm in my day kilt, but it does, however, attract more (friendly) comments/chat from tourists and locals alike.
In general, the locals like to see anyone wearing a kilt as we're proud of our national attire, so long as it's worn 'respectfully'. It doesn't need to be worn perfectly or anything like that, but I have seen instances of tourist appearing somewhat disrespectful and locals inquisitive as to whether they are, "takin the pish?"
Wear a kilt here? Absolutely! Edinburgh is renowned for it's warm hospitality and friendliness, but you'll experience an even warmer welcome if you're wearing a kilt!

This is from when I was in Scotland in 2014. I noticed that a handful of people wore them in Edinburgh, don't know if they were going to a function or what, Street performance. Then when I was in Fort William there was one person hiking. The largest group was at the Royal Highland Games. So I think it depends on what is happening at the time and where you see people in kilts. I've also have Scottish ancestors which I do own kilts and it always seems to have a good conversation over it.

I wear a kilt in Canada as daily dress just like I would jeans or a pair of shorts. I don't wear it every day, it's just in the rotation. I wear to take pride in my family heritage and ancestory. I wear it to teach my son about our family and genetic history.... To show appreciation for the past & those who have come before us... To have a connection to our past and where we came from. I wear it to spread awareness of Irish & Scottish culture, traditions & it starts lots of wonderful conversations ans creates real connections with people who share our heritage.

They work for a variety of functions. Proper dress and casual. I wear mine mostly with a tucked in polo or smarter t shirt on a daily basis. They work for formal which is where we mostly wear them really. Why do I wear mine? My gg grandfather did, my g grandfather wore one during the Great War, my grandfather too & my father. Then back out of memory. Am I proud of it? Yes. When I was a child we’d go as a family to culloden each year and put flowers on the clan marker. All the men wore them, I had my first dram on that field. I wear one and no one would make me change otherwise. Just as with anything we should remember our country and past, respect and be honest & true when sporting them.

I would wear it. They can see me as a tourist, but that's fine, because I would be a tourist. And of course you have those people who say that the Scots don't care if you're a Scottish American, but that's because the sense of pride in heritage is different in America. Because America is so young (to those who settled here), our younger heritage is American, but before that, our origination is from whatever nations our ancestors lived in. On the other hand, Scotland is a very old country, so 'Scottishness' is a normal part of everyday life, even to those who aren't really interested in heritage, because they live in Scotland. We do not live there, so we keep the traditions alive and well.

Most Scot's are friendly enough to not judge or be offended, It's not a common sight but we appreciate the patriotic and passionate, so if one feels happy about it, I would say do it! Most locals would be more intrigued than anything, And it's a good way to strike up a conversation with locals, We're so used to tourists all year round, Does not phase us in the slightest. My only advice is Be your self, Don't try to act like a local, If you don't understand something ask away, Our dialect is very strange, But are usually good at switching off our local Dialect, So you might find yourself in a situation where you can understand us well when talking directly, But in the next instance talk to a local in complete utter nonsense, its fair to say most will be lost in translation at some point.

Before 1745 the traditional clans would wear kilts on a semi-regular basis as a form of identification, but they could also be worn into battle especially as many highlanders could not afford any kind of actual armour, or even other clothes. After the Jacobite rebellion (the last time Scots fought against English rule), the English outlawed many Scottish traditions such as bagpipes and tartan under penalty of death or torture, that was 1745. As Scotland become industrious, we moved past our old culture, and tartan and such became accepted again by the 1900s. And during the world wars, kilts could be found again with the highland divisions. Now they're mostly just for special occasions and dance nights. Hope that wasn't too long winded, I'm Scottish so I can't help blab on about the history ahah!

    • @hamster5348

It's the same as wearing a normal kilt , I wear my utility kilt more and keep my normal kilt for formal wear. Respect from fife Scotland.

Mt late husband would have worn a kilt in Scotland. He would also have talked to anyone who wanted to talk. He loved people, and was known for flirting with little kids in the checkout line and helping the elderly. He loved people and would have talked to the man from Mars in sign language!

  • @colinp2238

You say it like people will only talk to you if you wear a kilt, that's not so tourists stick out like a sore thumb and as soon as you open your mouth it narrows it down. Don't be afraid to ask anyone in Scotland for information, Scots like to tell people about where they live and their history, just ask.

It’s not that you can’t wear a kilt but you’d get a few weird looks. The kilt is definitely formal wear which we hold dear. People would likely not think much of it cause we’d assume you’re going to a wedding or something but if you wear a kilt to McDonald’s you might get a couple raised eyebrows 😅 as long as you are respectful tho, no one will care

  • @sunseeker8457

I know this is an old video. But another thing that people forget is their story of why they are wearing said kilt. When people come up to them and ask things like "What clan is it"? Some people haven't got a clue and don't know what to say. That makes you look stupid. If you do have a clan history. Research it, be prone of it and tell it when asked! If you have zero histroy with a clan, but want to wear kilt. There are kilts for you also. Because if you do wear a kilt like say, the Black Watch. In Scotland they will expect you to have some ties with it like a family member was in the Black Watch regiment or something. People like a story. So have yours ready. I have 3 different kilts that I wear. All with family stories.

Being Scottish, we can mostly tell who is Scottish and who is a tourist when wearing a kilt, Tourists most of the time “play” with the kilt. Flowing it around and such. A Scotsman doesn’t. we love our kilts, but we only wears them for special occasions. Makes them more symbolic for us.

1:30 After spending 13 holidays in Scotland: no need to wear a kilt or do anything else to have easy conversation starters there. Scots are the easiest people to talk to, they welcome it. Except maybe in a city, quite a few of them will pass you by and greet you of their own accord. "Hiya" and "Awright?" are their common greetings. Wearing a kilt may get you more attention, but local people give you more attention anyway, than locals in, say, Germany or the Netherlands would.

Clan Gregor here. Why don't you guys have an actual Clan Gregor Tartan? The only thing you label "Gregor" isn't one of our tartans. It vaguely resembles the Glengyle pattern, but it's off and only certain people can wear it, even if it were correct. We have four, but the more important ones are the "MacGregor Red and Green" and the "MacGregor Red and Black", the latter being commonly known as the "Rob Roy" Tartan. It's just a little frustrating, that's all.

If you wear a kilt in Glasgow in the evening, you are identifying yourself as being an ideal target for a mugger, especially if you are South of the Clyde, and it's dark. On the bright side, at least you've got a Sgian Dubh for self defence, make sure it's a real one, not one of those that is actually a bottle opener!

For me it would probably who I talk to and where I would go over there. If I wanted to visit everywhere I could (and I would), in some areas I would either have to not wear my family's tartan or wear a universal tartan or wear my Irish Saffron kilt. I'm a Campbell of Breadalbane, and I along with my other clansmen no matter what part of the Campbell's we are from, we are not generally welcome over there. In some of those areas where my clan isn't welcome, I would have to lie about my last name or simply not go to those areas.
