  • On this episode of Searching for History, Erin and I go out into the Capitol State Forest looking for the remains of an old logging camp but end up visiting the small town of Porter, Washington. Porter was named after a Fairchild Porter, who settled there circa 1860. The majority of Porter was destroyed by fire in 1924. Most of the original town is gone, however a couple original buildings survive. Join us as we travel through the Capitol Forest and visit the almost a ghost town of Porter, Washington.

My dad was born just up the road in Malone in 1932. My grandpa worked in the woods for mud bay logging. Broke his shoulder logging so while he was laid up he built a barn with one arm. They don’t make them that tough anymore

No, they don't. I can't build a barn with two arms! Thanks for watching!

Thank you, not sure if I,ve been to Porter. I'll have go check out what shape the Tavern is in. I haven't come across a Rainier video. If you haven't done one , and are planning one, I may be able to help. I had a part in the restoration of the 1913 school. I,m in the book...

If you search through our older videos, we have a video where we make a quick stop at the Rainier school. If we ever make a video on Rainier proper, we will reach out. Thanks!

Regarding the old logging town at the foot of the black hills, could you possibly be thinking of the town of Bordeaux? It was an old logging town which no longer exists, other than the old bank fault which is still in the area. We used to own property nearby and the railroad still had a right of way on the edge of that property. There are still old pictures available of the town, but the town itself is gone.

Glad this search yielded some historical fruit, unless you also picked some blackberries in the forest? 😊

Sadly, no, but I bet right now the trailing blackberry is ready for picking!

That’s a very interesting church, with the tower and entrance on the corner. The other building could have been a church also, but seems strange to have two churches so close together. If it were, but is now privately owned, that could explain why the cross was removed. But as you say, more questions than answers. Thanks for the video!

Parcel ownership research might uncover the history of those buildings... Maybe someone who knows will leave a comment. Until then, it's on to the next video. 🙂 Thanks for watching!
