All entries singles during May and June 1980 in UK, in chronological order, with peak information, 44 years ago (about 100 songs overall). Missing song : Calibre Cuts - Calibre cuts (peak #75)
Covers the first half of the Musicians Union strike with the BBC which meant no Top Of The Pops from the end of May to the beginning of August (as well as other things such as no live music anywhere on BBC TV/Radio and delaying the start of the Proms season). Often wonder if that impacted any chart placings.
A fascinating mix of music. I was 19 and remember it well. Genres all over the place. Excellent! I note new versions of bands (Roxy Music, Ultravox) and the original version of a band (Human League) who made it big later. And Joy Division, who regrouped and became New Order. Span of Time Department: in 1980 the Rolling Sones first album was 16 years old. In 2024 Taylor Swift's first album is 18 years old.
I was in Zimbanwe during this period. It's interesting that anything that peaked over 20 on the UK charts was never even released in Zimbabwe unless it charted higher in US, Europe or Aussie.
The Bhundu Boys from Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 were quite popular in the U.K. during the mid 80s amongst alternative/indie music fans. Perhaps because John Peel and Andy Kershaw played their music on their shows.
Thanks for this video. Many classic songs. Some unforguetable like Little Jeanie, Xanadu by the unique Olivia Newton John, and Love willtear us apart. Great songs
Probably due to recent death of their singer Bon Scott - replaced of course by Brian Johnson. The album Back in Black album came out a few months later starting with the track Hells Bells but these songs are off earlier discs

Don’t forget there was radio 📻 and the strike didn’t affect Radio 1 in terms of DJ’s playing vinyl.
