- In this video I break out all the steelhead float fishing tips for beginners. I attempt to touch on every aspect of steelhead float fishing including steelhead float fishing tactics, steelhead float fishing rigs, float fishing tips and tricks, split shot patterns for float fishing and more. When it comes to steelhead rigs for river fishing It's near impossible to beat a steelhead float fishing rig. Steelhead float fishing setups can vary a lot based on fishing conditions and anglers preferences and many new fisherman are overwhelmed with shot patterns for float fishing steelhead, Float Fishing Leader Setups, and how to adjust to the water you are fishing. Like I said I had a bunch of requests lately asking me to show my steelhead float fishing rig. I am always experimenting with steelhead Float Fishing Rigs & Set Ups and shot patterns.
For me learning how to float fish for steelhead was a matter of learning how to rig for steelhead drift fishing and spending hours and months and even years to get that first legit bobber down on a steelhead and even then I lost the first 3 or 4 steelhead I hooked into under a float. it took me a while to build enough confidence with split shot patterns for float fishing and what baits to use and when or why to pick the right color bead or jig. I first learned how to fish a spawn bag and never caught a thing on beads until I built the confidence to work the water with a bead knowing that it will produce fish. It wasn't even a matter of knowing how to fish beads rather confidence in the bead color and size and the presentation needed. Now I know how to fish beads for steelhead but even better I know why to fish beads for steelhead and that allows me to fish with confidence.
I am new to Michigan steelhead fishing and have only been steelhead fishing Michigan or anywhere for a few years but Michigan steelhead have sucked me in and after a few years with little to no success fishing for steelhead I am beginning to get the hang of float fishing, centerpin fishing bait choices and seasonality of the steelhead run. There is no doubt in my mind that float fishing for steelhead is the way to go

Great info I have a lot to learn fishing up there I have not fished for Steel Heads before so when I move that way here soon I'll have to come back to this video and watch it again to set it up, Thanks for the info.
My pleasure :) it’s definitely a bit different than other techniques and takes some time to get used to. But float fishing for Steelhead is extremely effective.
Man this video is going to help so many people especially since the title made it easy to find as a beginner trying to look for advice. I just got into trout fishing this year and I’ve spent this whole winter figuring out everything for the first time. It’s definitely a very unforgiving time of year to learn how to trout fish on the Great Lakes but I’ve had a lot of fun speaking with people in the fishing community and going out to test and try things on my own. Even though I haven’t caught a trout yet I’m very eager to make more trips to the trout filled parts of the state in the warmer months this year.

Thank you for informative video, especially explaining the rigging. I just started fishing Steelhead last year on the Grand and the PM with friends. The detailed information you gave was very helpful for me at least.

@@jaredeberly9724 honestly that’s how you learn there’s been many times I’ve gone to a new spot I had an unsuccessful day but followed up on some new tips from local anglers to do better the next time! Steelheadfishing is really tough right now and will remain challenging until things warm up a little bit.

Can you use these rigs on Lake Ontario tributaries too?
Yep. Works in any river.
You really need to try and avoid shots of landmarks that can avoid spoiling those sleeper spots 🤣🤪😜

What is that spawn jar setup hanging off of your waders?
It is too at least Mike’s jars connected together at the lid with a clip. Something a buddy gave me that I think he made himself my new thing that I like to do is mini M&M tubes.
How do the lids attach to the clip?
@@kevinkaiser9714 the clip is attached to a fabric loop that is attached to both of the lids pierce through and connected from the other side.
Why do you favor hard beads over soft?
I’ve never caught a fish on a soft bead lol I started with soft beads but never got one to work. I haven’t tried since the early days though.

What spinning rod is that?
The one I rigged the slip float on is a lamiglas red line.
Great video. But when you get to be my age, you wont be biting off that line with your teeth anymore.

@@avenue8822 I have fished with Dave Thomas. He is a good dude and a solid guide. Did he have you using a mags baitcaster rod? That’s what I used when I fished with him and I liked that rod.
