Private schools with questionable curriculums, public schools that sidestep scientific topics, and a growing abundance of conspiratorial TH-cam videos are hindering our ability to separate scientific facts from beliefs or opinions. Yet as Adam Yamaguchi reports in this CBS Reports documentary, educators are finding ways to fight back.

Why can't people question things? Being creative and knowledgeable is what made us find out about mathematics and evolution. Now we can't think outside the box. We have to be robots. Just think black and white. People want meaning and purpose. This new science order doesn't allow us to try and find it.

*doubt & distrust?* So? That's what science is all about; have you heard of the Falsification Principle?
The Falsification Principle, proposed by Karl Popper, is a way of demarcating science from non-science. It suggests that for a theory to be considered scientific it must be able to be tested and conceivably proven false. For examples, 1) The hypothesis that "all swans are white," can be falsified by observing a black swan. 2) Creation evolutionists says they're NO transitional species, this can be falsified by viewing a transitional species event. BTW scientists have NOT provided ONE example of a transitional species event.

@@BrickworksDK Right? Please explain the Cambrian explosion? The scientists are stumped, clueless, silent, and not using critical thinking at all, knowing the data which is revealed today.
The time scale is not long enough to complete all species for that period. If you have actually read the "The Origin of Species" book written in 1859, summarized what has come to be known as 'Darwin's Dilemma' - the lack of fossils in sediment from the Precambrian (c. 4500 - 542 Mya). If Darwin's theory of natural selection was right, life evolved gradually over millions of years.

As an American myself, I think the biggest problem is my country's educational system. It's terrible compared to other countries in the developed world. I think one big problem is that education lacks standardization. If you live in Mississippi, you're not getting the same education as someone in Massachusetts. Plus education isn't authentic and is out of date. We still teach a curriculum designed to educate factory workers, which are being phased out due to mechanization. Our educational system also lacks important topics like critical thinking, which would make educational systems more transparent and would teach kids how to recognize real facts from fake information. Kids need to know their logical fallacies so that they can detect manipulation. I never learned how to think critically about my worldview until college. Too many people in this country go their whole lives without questioning what they believe and choose to instead argue that it is right to anyone who criticizes it.
TL;DR: The US Public Educational system needs to teach critical thinking skills in their schools, which needs standardizion.

I was raised Catholic, I went to public school but went to the CCD classes and confirmation. I am 40, so growing up in the 80's and 90's I don't remember my church discouraging Evolution. My priest when questioned on Biblical stories, especially creation and the great flood had explanations such as it is not understood exactly what a "day" was in biblical times, and that stories like the great flood were hyperbole, and rather than worry about the authenticity of the story, find the moral lesson and use it as an example to live by. Basically, you can keep the 10 commandments and live by the example of Jesus, but still learn, and explore, and accept science. Although I don't practice the faith, that lesson has stuck with me. Also back when I was a kid religion wasn't as nuts as it is now. In the 60's when I was a kid everyone had so much hope in science but 60 years later we see it was a false hope that ultimately was unsatisfying. All we see is that science has caused global warming that threatens to destroy life as we know it, and with the greatest technology the world has ever seen, the internet, we see people being destroyed through cybercrime.

English, for native speakers, can ignored as long as they read enough because they will learn how to use punctuation, grammar rules, and spelling without even trying.
