Left-handed lettering tips for underwriters and overwriters

  • Sorry about audio. Better audio version: • Left handed brush call...
Correction: In the beginning I mention that my paper is perpendicular to me. It's not. The camera is angled so that the paper at the beginning of the video looks straight to you. It's sitting on my desktop, angled 45 degrees to the right, away from me
TIPS for lefty letterers: It's not about the WAY you grip your pen. You might not need to switch your grip at all. Some of us do, because we're used to adapting in this world... a world made for righties! Try angling your paper differently to see what works. Lefty overwriters, lefty underwriters and lefty side writers: You can do this!
I find my traceable alphabets to be really helpful with learning your best alignment. The alphabets are available on Etsy at
    www.etsy.com/l...
What else is your biggest struggle? I'd love to make that video and help you out. Leave your comment below:)

I'm a right hander who is teaching himself to write left handed (with fountain pens rather than brushes). I've seen these terms scattered around with various interpretations. I think I am more an underwriter when left handed as it feels more natural to me. I like your simple definition of whether the pen body is over or under the base line. That makes sense. Thank you.
The issue of smearing is something I've not seen personally so either my grip and writing style aren't triggering that problem, or I am writing slowly enough that the ink becomes surface-dry by the time I reach it (which doesn't seem to be the case). For those that do have smearing issues, it might help to be aware of inks such as Noodler's Bernanke series as these have a short dry time.

Ma'am, I'm left handed and I underwrite. I've also abandoned the forward slant and instead, my writing has a definite back slant. I turn my page to the right at 45 degrees, and write down the page. As a result, I write faster, less fatigue and far lighter pressure. My letters are correctly formed, they just slant the other way. I used to be a side writer, I've never been a hook writer.

I just took up calligraphy and it's hard to do being left handed and that too with Crayola markers. Ordered me a brush en so hoping it's easier with that.

Thank you so much for an great video. I now know as an underwriter that I am pushing up! No wonder those thick lines were hard. Thank you

Can you do a video where you are writing in slow motion to see how you move your pen?

Thank you... I felt like you were talking just to me! Lol, this is exactly the probs I'm having... Paper placement... Pen angle, I was very interested when you said about which part of the open to use, I think that'll def help a bit. I have today ordered a right handed Oblique pen and nib, apparently it is easier to use that the lefty one. Anyway I'm off to try and find your very kind freebie lined paper guides. Thank you XXX trish

I'm ambidextrous and what she says about "righty-a-like-tendency" lefty handers is so truth for me.
When your pen has its point inclined (in relation to paper-pen) pointed to the right , just like right handeds, when you make moves with your hand to write letters it's easier to put force in the pen . As for paper position, usually they tilt the paper the left.
And when your pen is pointed to the other side, just like left handeds point it to the left, when you make the same moves it's actually harder to do letters if you use force , so smooth soft moves do better. As for paper position , its easier when you tilt the paper to the right.
It's funny because if you try to invert the position where the pen is pointed just like the sweet lady does for her writing, you will get with a hand the result of the other hand.

Thanks for your video. I am new to calligraphy. Having problems with my pen nib dropping blobs of ink. Is it possible my ink is too thin? Or is it because by being left-handed my upstrokes are pushing rather than dragging?

Thank you so much for this amazing video, and your offer of the guide sheets❣️ That’s really what I need to use to keep the angle of my lettering consistent. And I completely agree with you about starting out with a smaller pen. I bought the Tombow Dual End Brush Pens and the Pentel Brush Pens at the same time. My letters with the Pentel look so much better than with the Tombows. Thanks again for the guide sheets...I can hardly wait to try them❣️

Writing with all 5 fingers is infact weird - I'm a leftie but that one is completely new to me xD NGL
Thanks for making a left-handed lettering video. There are way to less of them.Otoh I got kinda experimental on that topic!

I am a side writer but don’t really have an issue with smudging as the ink seems to dry quickly. My main problem is that Tombow dual brush pens seem to fray really easy and I think it has to do with being a lefty. Does anyone else have this issue and/or any suggestions to fix this issue??

Joanne Faysal it can be helpful to choose paper that is very smooth. I have suggestions for smooth paper here: www.amazon.com/shop/m2bstudio

I also try holding the pen far from its tip when using my left hand, while I actually do the opposite and hold it closer with my right hand.

I am an overwriter left handed and love copperplate calligraphy, but have not yet found a nib holder with an appropriate angle so that I can make thick downstrokes and thin upstrokes. Oblique holders do not suit me because of the way I position the paper and hold the pen (the same way yo do it in the video as an overwriter) Anyone knows where to find and oblique holder with an adjustable angle? I need it almost at an angle of 90. I have practised a lot the underwriting position but is definitely not my thing.

Cecilia Jaime I have found that a straight holder is the only solution that works for me. Check out logoscalligraphy on Instagram. Also check out (there are a few videos maybe on TH-cam) John DeCollubus. He uses a righty oblique.
