  • Welcome to this the 18th episode of Season 2's Look...Look and Look Again !!! From around the world with Emanuelle we now stop in....Wales to bring you insight into an often overlooked 1969 drama series where myth and legend gets a grip of reality in Alan Garners celebrated tale 'The Owl Service' proving this part of the country offers plenty of hiraeth but equal amounts of horror too !!
In this documentary series we take a look and another look and even a third glance (hypothetically speaking) of T.V programmes and Films with a 'cult' edge.
If they aren't cult currently then they should be !!
Each programme looks at the genesis of the programme or movie and a review - some are spoiler free - some are not. Even if you know the plot though it is welcoming to look at the series or movie again.
So what is it I hope for in my series ? Well it is my intention to share with you dear viewer my knowledge of things which I enjoy very much and I hope what is reviewed will inspire you to go and have a look for the programme or movie. Some you may have seen before - others may be truly novel.
That is it pure and simple - I don't want any financial rewards as i will be using snippets already copyrighted and this is damned cheeky - the knowing of sharing my knowledge with you is reward enough.
Don't forget to support the originators of copyright so wonderful retro T.V and movies get to see the light of day.
I hope this acts as an inspiration for you to look...look and look again with me.
Every epsiode is a labour of love and it's only me and a very basic home editing software combi which I cobbled together that produces the work.
I hope you can also see the transformation as the series goes along.
Any constructive comments, criticisms and memories you have would be most welcome and if you love what I do hit like and subscribe.
Thank you to all the regular people that bite off this nugget of nostalgia and follow my little series.
Maybe you could suggest things for me to look at or if you have any suggestions please share them.
No infringement is intended - I am a novice to this and sometimes oblivious to the complex world of copyright but all clips and music are used in the faith of enhancing this review.
    Enjoy xx

It’s fascinating how some short-lived sci-fi and horror series can feel particularly more creative than most of the easily enduring ones. Thank you for enlightening us all again with your review. 🎃

Thank you. It most certainly is the case - this was very brave indeed especially so cerebral for a child audience but kids were more cerebral back then. The Owl Service works on so many levels for all ages. Bringing the legends to life - never to be forgotten. The 60's and 70's were most certainly the best times for t.v it's a shame, as silent cinema, there is so much of it missing. 👻🦀

@@LOOKLOOKLOOKAGAIN You’re welcome. It’s now also interesting to consider how The Owl Service could have inspired Stranger Things.

@@LOOKLOOKLOOKAGAIN I just read that The Owl Service is now getting a Blu-Ray release and I saw the trailer. This should be great for the Halloween season. 🎃

I loved this book as a teenager, and still do on re-reads. I was surprised to find it had a TV production, which I just watched on YT. I was even MORE surprised at how damn good and brave it is, especially for the time. To this day it is still a challenging, subtle, and thoughtful experience. I pretty much love all of Garner's work, he wrote mature fiction fiction for children and young adults with understanding and not condescension, and challenges on many levels while still being fundamentally accessible and enjoyable.

@@adampoll4977 Totally agree , it could have only happened in the 70's.

Great review. One of my favourite books due to all the layers. I've never watched the series unfortunately as I was only one when it ran!

Thank you for this excellent review. I remember seeing this as a young child and the images of the copse of trees, the young people and the hole in the stone have remained with me. I recently started re-watching the Owl Service and was immediately struck by the colours and the character signifiers (the electrical wire analogy is intriguing). I too thought the acting to be uniformly good and often naturalistic (rather like Ken Loach can inspire). Two things still fascinate me, one is the character of the father and his relationship with the girl and the other is the striking absence of the mother. Thank you for this...I shall now go look, look and look again at more of these reviews

Makes a refreshing change to hear a voice-over that isn't delivered by a robot.

Good commentary on an interesting programme. I got it when it first came out on DVD, but this has inspired me to go back and watch it again.

They've mistaken the point of the Stone of Gronw though: Blodeuwedd sets up Llew to be murdered by Gronw, right enough, and then Llew turns into a rotting eagle, to be rescued and brought back by Gwydion. But then he demands the right to murder Gronw in his turn and it's Gronw who asks to have the stone stand between him and Llew ('since it was the woman who made me do it'!) and Llew's spear that goes right through the stone to kill Gronw, not the other way round.
That's why it's Roger's acceptance of Gwyn's verbal revenge that brings about the final resolution.

Hi - thank you so much for highlighting this important fact and adding further insight into an important part of the Welsh fable. I appreciate it very much and this makes further sense as Owl Service isn't a 'light' watch as it demands several viewings. This will also enlighten fans of the series who watch the review and read this comment. One of my viewers also said its having a blu ray release so am looking forward to that and saving the pennies to buy it. Thanks for watching 🦀

OK you've out-done yourself this time. I had never heard of this series or the book, so again you've educated me. It sounds truly thrilling, well-rounded and intensly thought out. Maybe i'll go see if i can find it, lol.

Thank you Princess- You can get this fantastic little series on DVD via network dvd distribution - it's so kidult and when watching it you can't believe it was for children at the time. it really brings the legends and lore of the Welsh to life and is worth a watch - though to get the complete picture repeat viewing is essential - a fantastic little show in my opinion and up there with children of the stones , another essential piece of viewing if you haven't seen that one. 🦀😃x
