The Waxi boot is an enduring icon of the Border and Bush Wars - Conflicts which dominated South Africa and present day Zimbabwe during the Cold War. Outside of Africa and certain military circles both of these wars have faded into obscurity. Don’t get the wrong idea though, they were anything but boring.

As a South African that lives near a Surplus store...that whole kit would cost me under 120 US dollars...execpt the gun

Lucky. I wish we in the US would get more SA surplus and parts kits imports.

I love my pair of waxis. They come oversized though however for me that's fine because I can wear them with thick wool socks and get a very comfortable fit.

mine came the exact size I ordered, which is good because I ordered a little large to begin with.
      they are very comfy.

i bought a pair on a whim. the break-in was kinda painful, but i expected that. thick socks and bandaids helped a lot. after a couple weeks, they were nicely broken in. wore them for spring turkey season, which was a few weekends of walking on fairly level ground though soggy fields and woods. while i was not surprised in the least at how quickly my feet got wet in the soggy woods and fields of new hampshire in may, i was amazed at how quickly my feet dried while wearing the waxi boots. towards the end of the season i developed a new issue, the insole had worn to the point where it was paper thin on the heel and ball of my foot. i replaced the insoles with a relatively inexpensive pair, and wore them with the new insoles off and on for another few weeks. in august i decided to give them a proper test, a 12 mile hike in the white mountains, which was as much a challenge of my general level of fitness as it was the ability of the boots. at the end of that day i was completely worn out, and while my feet were in fact tired and sore, i have zero reason to believe the boots were to blame.
for those of you on the fence about buying a pair, just fuckin do it. replace the insoles when you get them, wear them for a couple hours a day with thick or double socks on errand runs, and you;ll have a solid pair of boots that'll keep you going,

When we were issued them, SOP was to soak them in water overnight and wear them in the sun with two pairs of socks. I guess I had tougher feet back in the 80’s.

to be fair, they cost typical combat boot prices.

@@capt.raptor4650 Given the exhange rate (18 - 1) that's a shit ton of money going to the manufacturer, even if KS makes some profit on the deal. I never saw any of these when I was in the Army in SA but then they were pretty much the preserve of the Recce's I guess. Though I did see some officers and NCO's who resoled their regular SADF boots with the anti tracking sole. I'd like to get a pair but they are just a bit too expensive for me at present. Hopefully they'll manage to get another shipment in the future.

Worth it , you usually get what you pay for most boots that are well made go for a little more than pair of walmart boots but last longer and look better if cared for.

I still have a pair, one of my most prized possessions. That and my Aapjas (basically our version of a trench coat) and considering we live in Africa, it was a damn amazing piece of kit. Mine came with a raincoat sewn into the coat.

The flat soles were a bastard to walk long distances in fine sand … most guys pivoted from flatties back to issued treaded soles after a couple of months in “Nam” and further North

how do these cmpare to jim greene boots? you mentioned that waxis are hand-made made by a family-owned business, it would be interesting to know if it's jim greene who also are family owned. btw, jim greene makes boots for wildlife rangers in south africa.
